Specialised Product Designed for speed, portability and performance RapidScan+ has been developed as a versatile and user-friendly A, B and C-scan inspection instrument. Using novel, proprietary, rubber coupled array sensors, immersion quality A-scan data is recorded very quickly. Powerful gating and evaluation tools ensure that the ultrasonic signals can be analysed and interpreted to the fullest extent.RapidScan+ operates in pulse-echo mode suitable for inspecting medium to large areas. The high resolution C-scans show time of flight and amplitude data, simultaneously displaying both A and B-scans live. Sliding Bubbler ProbeScanning surfaces with curvatures is often a challenge for Ultrasonic NDT, especially in Aerospace Testing. The trade-off between large area coverage and surface profi le means that sometimes physically smaller sensors produce the best results. Sonatest Bubbler Probes have been developed to resolve these issues.The 40mm Bubbler Probe has been designed for diffi cult to access areas and for curved components. It requires a water feed and this provides exceptionally smooth operation on most metallic and composite surfaces. A spring loaded encoder wheel ensures that scan data is registered in the correct location and the lightweight design minimises operator fatigue.

Stringer ProbeThe Stringer Inspection Probe has been developed in consultation with Aerospace Manufacturers for scanning long stringer components where access to the stringer radius is critical in aerospace testing.This sensor can be supplied with a standard 50mm array, a large 100mm array and one or two high resolution spring loaded encoders to ensure 100% coverage at each end of the part to inspect. Using a solid, hard-wearing rubber shoe and moulded plastic hand grip, this probe is also suited to scanning curved parts.

X6 Series - Phased Array TransducersThis probe series has the capabilities to generate very large virtual probe apertures because of its 128 elements specifications. Typically used in a 0° Linear Scan type mode (L-Scan), its large footprint makes it ideal for applications like corrosion mapping and composite inspection because it can cover large areas very quickly. These X6 probes also have a fine element pitch to offer very high resolution capabilities which gives the flexibility to improve defect sizing, material penetration and signal to noise ratio performances by using small or large focal law apertures.


DaaH Series Transducers The DaaH (Detachable Active Array Head) range provides a unique phased array probe solution using standard cables and a range of detachable probe heads. Single CompressionTransducers Single element or straight beam transducers are commonly used to measure thickness and to detect flaws on plates, bars, forgings, castings and extrusions. They are applied directly to the flat surfaces of the test material or object. Transducers with smaller diameters can be applied to test slightly curved surfaces.

High Damped (SLH)Normal beam flaw detection, detection of delaminations, thickness gauging, metals, glass, ceramics, porcelain, composites.

High Damped/Low Profile (SLP)The same damping as with the SLF series but with a low profile housing which allows access to hard to reach areas. Regularly used as a search probe in environments such as aircraft applications, machined components and composites.

Low Damped (SLC)These longitudinal contact transducers are suited where power and penetration is more important than near surface resolution: bar and billets.

High Damped (SLG)A regular transducer used for testing small and large components of different materials such as: metals, glass, ceramics and porcelain.

Replaceable Membrane (SLF)Used for contact testing on rough, cast, pitted or abrasive surfaces with minimal transducer wear, such as: castings, forgings and billets.

Medium Damped (SLM)A regular standard transducer used for testing small to large components of different materials and geometries such as: metals, glass, ceramics, porcelain and composites.

Large Low Frequency (LLF)Used for testing, with minimal transducer wear, on larger or highly attenuative work pieces with rough, cast, pitted or abrasive surfaces such as: castings, forgings and billets.


Twin Compression Transducers Twin Compression transducers are primarily used to measure thickness, detect flaws and corrosion in thin materials, especially where near surface resolution is required. This range is also ideal for use in general and critical weld inspection.

Twin Compression (D)For thickness measurement in areas of restricted access and near surface flaw detection. Brazed or soldered joints. Concave surfaces - white metal bearings.

Protective Membrane (CDF)Used with or without the protective membrane for thickness gauging and near surface flaw detection on: plate, bar, tube and pipe, castings and forgings, machined parts, bond testing.

Combined Double (CD)Corrosion inspection, thickness measurement and locations of the defects near the surface. Pipes and vessels, plate, small bore pipe work, brazed joint inspection, bond testing on white metal bearings, aerospace applications. Available in high temperature.

Gemini (GEM)Useful for corrosion inspection, thickness measurement and locations of the defects near the surface. Pipes and vessels, plate, small bore pipe work, brazed joint inspection, bond testing on white metal bearings, aerospace applications and weld inspection. Available in high temperature.


Angle Beam Transducers Angle Beam transducers allow the sound beam to be introduced into the test material at an angle. Plastic wedges of controlled geometry are attached to the transducer active element in order to establish the desired angle. Sonatest wedges are precision engineered to produce a refracted shear wave within the test object at specific angles.

Application Specific Transducers Sonatest are able to manufacture a wide range of transducers to suit any application. If you cannot find the appropriate transducer within our range, Sonatest will develop a ‘Special’ transducer specifically for your application requirements. Over the last 40 years Sonatest have manufactured Special Transducers for many different applications, ranging from the rail industry to the aerospace industry.

Examples of some of the ‘Specials’ which we have previously developed:

The Rail ProbeOne example of our capabilities with “Specials” is the Rail Probe. The Rail Probe was specifically designed to have two angle probes (@MHz, 70º) at either end and a compression probe in the middle (2MHz). This probe is used in combination with a flaw detector on a railcart to scan rails. The rail probe has proved to be a very succesful transducer and is manafactured today exclusively by Sonatest.

Boiler Tube Probes (BTP’s)Small low profile twin angle beam transducers with integral cables for the inspection of welds in steam boilers in power stations. Axially radiused to suit 50 mm boiler tubes. %MHz, with an increased toe in angle to produce a short focal length to suit these welds and available as 70º and 60º with BNC or LEMO 1 connectors to fit flaw detectors.

Soft Tipped Probes (STP’s)Soft Tipped transducers are for use with Sonatest dry contact flaw detectors such as the Masterscan series. Applications include the testing of composites, rubber, wood, ceramics and friction material. No surface preparation is required for the majority of applications. Ideally suited for test specimens with complex shapes. Operating through transmission mode using two transducers.

Roller ProbesDry contact roller probes are mainly used where automated testing is required. Sonatest Roller probes are available with microdot and mini lemo connector options.
