Introduction Sonatest Ltd has one over-riding and driving motivation – to design, manufacture and market the world’s best Non-Destructive portable instruments. From our Quebec R&D centre we design a wide range of high performance ultrasonic instruments. Our UK base is the hub for manufacturing and distribution.

Founded in 1958, Sonatest Ltd. was the subject of a Management buy-out backed by 3i Ltd, from the Schlumberger group in April 1986. The company was then acquired by two equal shareholders in 2010, Mr Norman Ng and Mr Pierre Husarek. Registered with BSI to ISO9001:2008 as a manufacturer of assessed capability substantial investment has been made in Quality Systems and training in recent years resulting in Sonatest’s reputation for quality and reliability.

Sliding Bubbler ProbeScanning surfaces with curvatures is often a challenge for Ultrasonic NDT, especially in Aerospace Testing. The trade-off between large area coverage and surface profi le means that sometimes physically smaller sensors produce the best results. EZ Scan Encoder The EZ Scan 4 is a small, magnetic wheel, single axis linear B-scan encoder for use with our EHC-09DLCW ultrasonic thickness gauge with colour A and B-Scan. Single CompressionTransducers Single element or straight beam transducers are commonly used to measure thickness and to detect flaws on plates, bars, forgings, castings and extrusions. They are applied directly to the flat surfaces of the test material or object. Transducers with smaller diameters can be applied to test slightly curved surfaces.

Angle Beam Transducers Angle Beam transducers allow the sound beam to be introduced into the test material at an angle. Plastic wedges of controlled geometry are attached to the transducer active element in order to establish the desired angle. Sonatest wedges are precision engineered to produce a refracted shear wave within the test object at specific angles.

Application Specific Transducers Sonatest are able to manufacture a wide range of transducers to suit any application. If you cannot find the appropriate transducer within our range, Sonatest will develop a ‘Special’ transducer specifically for your application requirements. Over the last 40 years Sonatest have manufactured Special Transducers for many different applications, ranging from the rail industry to the aerospace industry.

Examples of some of the ‘Specials’ which we have previously developed:

The Rail ProbeOne example of our capabilities with “Specials” is the Rail Probe. The Rail Probe was specifically designed to have two angle probes (@MHz, 70º) at either end and a compression probe in the middle (2MHz). This probe is used in combination with a flaw detector on a railcart to scan rails. The rail probe has proved to be a very succesful transducer and is manafactured today exclusively by Sonatest.

Boiler Tube Probes (BTP’s)Small low profile twin angle beam transducers with integral cables for the inspection of welds in steam boilers in power stations. Axially radiused to suit 50 mm boiler tubes. %MHz, with an increased toe in angle to produce a short focal length to suit these welds and available as 70º and 60º with BNC or LEMO 1 connectors to fit flaw detectors.

Soft Tipped Probes (STP’s)Soft Tipped transducers are for use with Sonatest dry contact flaw detectors such as the Masterscan series. Applications include the testing of composites, rubber, wood, ceramics and friction material. No surface preparation is required for the majority of applications. Ideally suited for test specimens with complex shapes. Operating through transmission mode using two transducers.

Roller ProbesDry contact roller probes are mainly used where automated testing is required. Sonatest Roller probes are available with microdot and mini lemo connector options.
