Simple Plan – I’d Do Anything The music video for Simple Plan’s ‘I’d Do Anything’ revolves around an ‘Enhanced Performance’ (Joe Gow ‘Music Video Communication, Popular formulas and emerging genre’s) the term enhanced performance, means a video displaying an element of performance, with other visual elements, a blend justified through either associational, narrative or abstract forms of motivation. Simple plan’s video for this particular single, blends a performance, with a minor storyline referring to how fans gain entry to their concert, through various forms of show-boating and trickery.

Close-Up Of a ‘Simple Plan’ fan is an indication of the type of target audience that the band appeals to, and the type of musical genre that the band represents. By the numerous tattoos and piercings on display, it is suggested that this particular person is a fan of the ‘punk-pop’ genre. Furthermore, this shot is extremely early in the video, and conjoins well with the fast paced and eccentric opening guitar riff, signifying rebelliousness, and fun.

This Mid-point shot, is also transferred from the opening scenes of the ‘I’d Do Anything’ music video; like the previous screen-shot, it is a display of the type of music fan that the band appeal to. Punk-rock/pop tends to attract 16-18 year olds that are of the west coast skateboarding culture. The hooks used tend to be catchy, and chart friendly, possibly a sign that whilst the band’s music videos represent them as being carefree, and fun loving punks; their music is in fact extremely mainstream and chart friendly, contradicting their dress style which tends to be considered rebellious and unacceptable. This particular fan, is displaying her tattoo of the band’s logo as a way of gaining entry to their concert.

Use of this Establishing-Shot, could be considered important, as the angle seems to be taken from the perspective of a fan, whilst witnessing the band perform the song live. This particular shot displays what the band are mainly renowned for their energy, and passion whilst performing, something that over time, has become part of their star iconography (Andrew Goodwin: Forms and Conventions) as this is a strong selling point of the band, it is highly likely that their record company (Atlantic Records) requested that many shots of the band performing, as it assists in establishing their identity as artists. Again, this is reference to Andrew Goodwin’s Forms and Conventions. Also, this element of the video a hybrid/ pseudo-documentary, as it displays the process of video production to some extent.
