Persian Pomegranate Soupwith Fresh Herbs and Mini Meatballshp://turmericsaron.blogspot.ca/
I've let many winters and pomegranate seasons go by with-
out wring about ash-e anar. However, this me as I
watch the icy snow akes rapidly hit the windows and pile
up all around the house I'm thinking it's me to post a rec-
ipe for this hearty and tasty ash-e anar. The idea of making
a warm ash on a cold day or when you feel a lile under the
weather and need a pick-me-up was passed down to me
by my mother. I make ash reshteh all the me and chances
are if you open my refrigerator you'll nd a bowl tucked in
somewhere. Not to menon, aer all these years living in
America, it's only recently that I've been nding large, ruby-
red, juicy pomegranates in the market by where I live.
You can make this soup with brown or green lenls if you
are not a fan of yellow split peas. If you choose to use
lapeh (yellow split peas) I would suggest boiling them for
7-10 minutes on medium heat, remove any of the foamthat comes to the surface, drain and then add to the stew.
When making the kooeh ghelgheli -mini meat-
balls try to make them as ny as possible. They should be
easily scooped up by a tablespoon. If you nd the recipe a
lile sour you can add a lile sugar to the stew. This recipe
serves 6-8 people but if you want to make less you can
easily cut the amount of ingredients in half. And I think you
should denitely serve this ash with nana dagh - hot
dried mint and oil mixture.
Ingredients:
Serves 6-8
1 pound ground meat (lamb, beef or turkey)
1 cup rice, rinse well, drain
1/2 cup yellow split peas, rinse well
1 large onion, chopped
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 bunch parsley, remove the stems, nely chopped
1 bunch cilantro, nely chopped
1 bunch scallion, green parts only, nely chopped
2 tablespoons nely chopped fresh mint leaves
1 tablespoon nely chopped fresh tarragon
1/2 cup pomegranate molasses, more if you like
Turmeric Powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons dried mint
2-3 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
Vegetable oil
Water
Method:
1.Combine the yellow split peas and 2 cups of water in a
medium saucepan, bring to a boil over medium-high heat,
skimming the foam from the surface, lower the heat and
cook for about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
2.Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a large pot over medium heat
add the onion and cook unl unl golden brown, add the
minced garlic, saute for 2-3 minutes, srring frequently. Ad
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, sr well.
3.Add the rice, split peas, and 8 cups of water to the pot.
Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the
heat and cook over medium-low heat for 30 minutes with
the lid slightly ajar, srring occasionally.
4.In the meanme, combine the meat with 2-3 tablespoons
of the chopped vegetables, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, salt and
pepper. Mix thoroughly. Take small piece of meat mixture
and form into meatballs. Connue shaping unl all the mea
is used.
5.Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat an
fry the meatballs unl brown on all sides.
6.Add the meatballs, pomegranate molasses, chopped
vegetables, salt and pepper to the pot. cover and simmer olow heat for another 30-40 minutes.
7.In a small pot, heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil over medium
heat, add a pinch of turmeric and 2 tablespoons of dried
mint, sr and remove from stove.
Pour the ash into a large serving bowl, drizzle with nana
dagh and garnish with pomegranate seeds, if desired. Serv
with warm bread.
Enjoy!

known to us). If the need is important and unfullled,
tension will build up and we will seek release. This
release will only happen if we reach our goal. When our
goal is aained our need should be sased. There are
many needs, as we have seen from other arcles I have
wrien: physical needs, social needs, esteem needs, self-
actualizaon needs, and now psychology (with spiritual-
ity) is acknowledging our need for transcendence, thatis, that our life be worthwhile. When Isadore Sharp was
chairman of the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, he said
the company does not movate its employees. Instead,
they begin by hiring people who are already movated!
As it was back then in the 1990s, employees sll expect
appreciaon, respect, and integrity from management.
He was adamant that employees couldnt be customer-
driven and rules-driven at the same me.
Because the topic of this arcle is such an important one,
I have decided to nish it with a favourite story of mine:
The Lile Red Hen. It captures a lot of what IsadoreSharp inferred by his comments (above). Some of you
may remember hearing it or reading the story as children
or even recing it to your own children. But I think it cap-
tures so much of why or why not we do what we do. I
have applied it to a work situaon. Heres the story:
The Little Red HenOnce upon a me there was a lile red hen who
scratched about the barnyard unl she uncovered some
grains of wheat. She turned to other workers on the farm
and said, If we plant this wheat, we'll have bread to eat.Who will help me plant It?''
We never did that before," said the horse, who was the
supervisor.
I'm too busy,'' said the duck.
Id need complete training,'' said the pig.
'It's not in my job descripon,'' said the goose.
Well, Ill do it myself,'' said the lile red hen.
And she did. The wheat grew tall and ripened into grain.
Who will help me reap the wheat? asked the lile red
hen.
Lets check the regulaons rst, said the horse.
Im on my lunch break, said the duck.
Out of my classicaon, said the pig.
Then I will, said the lile red hen, and she did.
At last it came me to bake the break.
Who will help me bake the break? asked the lile red
hen.
That would be overme for me, said the horse
Ive got to run some errands, said the duck.
If Im to be the only helper, thats unfair, said
the goose.
Then I will, said the lile red hen.
She baked ve loaves and as ready to turn them
in to the farmer when the other workers stepped up.
They wanted to be sure the farmer knew it was a group
project.
It needs to be cleared by someone else, said
the horse.
Im calling the shop steward, said the duck.
I demand equal rights, yelled the goose.
Wed beer le a copy, said the pig.
But the lile red hen turned in the loaves by herself.
When it came me for the farmer to reward the eort,
he gave one loaf to each worker.
But I earned all the bread myself, said the lile
red hen.
I know, said the farmer, but it takes too much
paperwork to jusfy giving you all the bread. Its much
easier to distribute it equally, and that way the others
wont complain.
So the lile red hen shared the bread, but her co
workers and the farmer wondered why she never baked
any more.

a lifeme to really come upon our calling, that which we
were born to be and do. Some people, like addicts, never
nd out, and go from pillar to post, never discovering
what it is that life calls them to.
Happy the person who lives his or her truth, psychologi-
cally and spiritually. Its easier said than done, for sure. But we really dont have a choice in the maer, that is, as
I wrote at other mes, we are always hounded by that
small inner voice that keeps pushing to be and become
who life wants us to be and become. Nevertheless, even
if we do not nd ourselves unl later in life, we will sll
do what we do, we will sll live what we live for a reason,
healthy or not. We can tell when people are living from
their inner truth because there is a naturalness about
them; theyre able to deal with the ups-and-downs of
daily living, especially the disappointments. They feel as
strongly as anyone else, perhaps even more so. An addict
anesthezes the uncomfortable feeling by alcohol, drugs, overwork, non-stop relaonships, etc. The goal is to live
life as fully as possible. As I have heard it said so oen:
the only way to deal with something is to go through it.
In other words, face reality. Our society is loaded with
alternaves for us to avoid reality: from special vacaons,
to busyness, to addicons of all sorts.
In a company the same principles apply: employees main
reason for movaon is that they want their eorts and
contribuons to be recognized. Illustrated below is a
model I put together for you on movaon:
This model answers the queson why we do what we
do. It starts o with a need we have (known or un-
There is always a reason. There is always what is known
as a movator. Many psychologists have studied why we
do what we do and have proposed dierent types of an-
swers. When you ask yourself, Why am I doing what Im
doing? oen the answer will be immediate, somemes
not. Answers can range from pleasure, perhaps greed, or
money, or fame, etc. Or you may have a more altruisc
movaon: wanng to help others. We just wouldnt
be able to hang in there, as they say, unless there was
something in it for me! that doesnt mean that its
wrong if something or someone is doing a for me; not
at all. I have always talked to people over the years about
being creavely selsh, that is, we are no good to oth-
ers if we do not have vested interest in what were doing.
Otherwise our acons come across as plasc or patron-
izing. This is a big shock to young people when they real-
ize that what they are doing is not really what they want
to do. Adults go through that as well. Somemes it takes
