Add to that, to be sitting in Olds, Alberta on a Friday night, sipping wine, with your peers from across the nation and physically see what will probably be the greatest assembly of live cattle selling all fall, consisting entirely of bred heifers and heifer calves that carry the most modern lineage of the respective herds they hail from, it doesn’t get much better! The live cattle will definitely make their home provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba proud to call them their “native daughters”. The flush and embryo opportunities category at the “Trust” this year represent multiple provinces including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. The proven genetics offered in this grouping are outstanding. “For the Betterment of the Breed” is elevated to a new level as we enjoy a beef cattle market in an all time high. This event as many of you are aware, was created to benefit all Simmental breeders with its early fall timing to establish the value of papered Simmental for the next several months. It has certainly done that. As a matter of fact we’ve even seen other sales out average it later in the season. Both Brian MacKenzie and I have explored the discussion in past sales management comments for the Red Roundup and the National Trust posing the question,”What if these sales were held in December, how good could they be?” However we know that the point of them would be gone as they need to lead things off to help establish market value for all. The National Trust wasn’t only created to establish market value, a huge priority was placed on camaraderie and breed unity. One of the first things written in the early promotional campaign was,”Check your prejudices at the door!” We thank Craig Mills for the quote, he only echoing the Transcon voice of all getting along. We are happy to create this event and have all modern strains of Simmental represented together under one roof. We wish we could facilitate every Simmental breeder’s sale into our calendar but know that’s impossible and governed by our “complete management” mandate but also are fortunate to maintain such strong relationships with the Simmental community regardless if we sell cattle through our managed sales or not. The National Trust is our way of giving back to the breed that has treated us so well. I need to give a very special thanks to Stacy Young (with assistance from her mother Dee and some occasional help from her Aunt Gay-lene) for the extraordinary job decorating that has been done at National Trust for the first three chapters of the event. Very often in life it’s the little things that make all the difference and undoubtedly Stacy had all the final touches prepared with a professional polish to make the event what it has been. For those of you who have the enjoyed comfort, charm and luxury that was offered to you at National Trust, thank Stacy next time you see her. A scheduling conflict won’t allow Stacy to assist this year but thank you very much for all your past efforts. As we do utilize the very best sales professionals throughout the year it is always hard to decide on our auction staff at ringside so we do rotate them occasionally at National Trust. We have had Carl Wright from Ontario at Chapters 1 & 2 and thank him for being a part of the event in it’s infancy. This year we are going to add to the rotation our good friends and professionals, Robert Lind and Ben Wright. A big thanks to Dennis Ericson and Ryan Dorran for honorably stepping aside so we could fairly show appreciation to all staffing personnel. MR. CONSISTENCY (Romano) will be coming 7 years old this January and becomes more popular each year. We have received many inquiries as to when we would be selling this great herdsire…my response has always been “when I can find a bull to replace him, I’ll consider moving him”…which I haven’t found one yet. MR. CONSISTENCY has sired bulls within 3 good herds - Champ Simmentals, LaBatte Simmentals and here at Virginia Ranch. We’re not talking about 2 to 4 bulls, I am talking about 38 of them, and these 38 fellas have averaged $7,650. MR CONSISTENCYS’ daughters – 18 of them thus far have graced the sales ring to average an impressive $7,200 each. So if you have any doubt as to why we are calling Romano, MR. Ms Barbilynn is Jays’ pick of the heifers this year. Actually he spotted her in the open pen last fall on his tour and said she would be National Trust sale bound in 2011…and he didn’t change his mind when he saw her this year! For the past four National Trust sales, Anchor “T” Barbi has had three of her granddaughters selected for this sale. Barbilynns’ dam has been a very productive cow – 2 bulls from her have sold, one going to the Three Hills Colony and the other to Big Prairie Simmentals; 2 heifers, one at home and the other sold to Rendezvous Farms (David Maguet) at the Equation sale 2009 in Red Deer, AB. Barbilynn is bred to a bull we selected and purchased out of Texas. He is an almost solid red, polled Full Fleckvieh. Canyon is structurally very correct with great eye appeal. Ms Dolly was supposed to be the replacement for WFL Red Doll 517H, but when you open up the heifer pen to Jay Good, he usually finds the good ones! Virginia Ranch doesn’t have many red factor females, but the day we purchased Red Doll 517H as an eight year old was a day we won’t forget, as she was a great bonus to our red program. Her 1st heifer born on Virginia Ranch remains in our herd; her 2nd calf, a bull sold to Parview Simmentals for $15,500; her 3rd bull calf sold to Marty Shearer of Delburne, AB; and her 4th bull (a full sibling to Ms Dolly 57X) sold to Mappin Simmentals for $11,000. Dolly is bred to a thick, stout, HOMOZYGOUS POLLED bull with calving ease we purchased from Twin-Chief Simmentals a couple of years ago.

The Transcon Team has brought a suggestion forward of choice from our entire 2010 bred heifer pen as a way of advertising Maxwell Simmentals at Chapter IV of National Trust. “For the Betterment of the Breed” has been the slogan that was adopted for National Trust and has always coincidentally been a “golden rule” for us at Maxwell Simmentals and we are proud to abide by the belief and see it used as a theme to National Trust. We are very pleased to have been a part of the “Trust” since it started in 2008. We are very proud of, and grateful for, the way our cowherd has treated us. We put a lot of stock in the females and largely credit them to our successes in the bull business. We also maintain that to be suc-cessful selling bulls, we need to invest in high quality herdsires. When I went to the Bar 15 (Anne’s) dispersal last year, I planned on buying a couple of cows. What I should have done was buy a few more. Great calves come from great cows. This heifer is real hard to part with but fortunately we had three outstanding Wolfes Thunder heifers this year so that makes this parting easier. We are very excited to offer the first daughter from our new Full Fleckvieh herdsire, KNTZ 11W, at this years National Trust sale. 107Y is an awesome female with a big, deep rib, long spine, lots of shape over her quarter and that dark red color that Whistler 11W consistently left us. We dug

deep to bring this heifer to town as we don’t have a large number of 11W calves on the ground as we sampled him lightly the first year. Every year we talk about cow families in our footnotes for females that we offer for sale and this year is no different as 107Y goes back to our 175C cow family that has, and continues to do such a good job here. 107Y was also part of our show team this past summer where she caught the eye of some very astute cattlemen.
