As I write this article of Silver
Linings next week Luther Memo-
rial Home will be celebrating
National Nursing Home Week.
Our Activity department has
scheduled many activities and I
am sure pictures will be in this
issue as well. This is always such
a fun week for the residents and
employees of LMH and a week to
celebrate.
Let me recap happenings here
at Luther Memorial Home since
our last issue of Silver Linings. In
March we held our 61st annual
meeting of the Luther Memorial
Home Corporation. Again during
this meeting delegates elected
three Board members. Re-elected
were Doug Petersen and Gary
Kaldor. They will be serving their
second of two terms. Also elected
was Richelle Mewes who will be
starting her first term in March.
Luther Memorial Home would
like to thank Maren (Allison)
Johnson for her service
of six years on Luther
Memorial Home’s Board
of Directors. She will be
dearly missed.
Luther Memorial
Home highlighted a very
strong financial year with
many awards and accom-
plishments. Also during
this annual meeting two
staff members gave
presentations, they being
Adam Edwards our new
Human Resource Direc-
tor, and Laura Rasmus-
sen one of our Licensed
Social Workers. They
spoke on their job duties
and responsibilities here
at Luther Memorial.
During Nursing Home Week
we recognize our staff members
who are nominated for the Care-
giver of the Year Award. These
nominations come from families
or residents who believe our staff
members have gone above and
beyond their call. The following
members were nominated: Rachel
Balstad, Irma Bennett, Melinda
Donohue, Julie Johnson, Amanda
Landa, Jessica Nelson, Lisa Nel-
son, Lee Ann Strand, Brett Ulrich
and LMH Staff. First of all I
would like to thank our staff
members for the outstanding job
that they did and secondly to the
residents and their families for
taking the time to nominate these
fine staff members. Congratula-
tions to all of them.
Also during Nursing Home
Week we recognized our employ-
ees who obtained years of service
milestones. The following staff
members were recognized: 5
years) Jennifer Koenig, Ilene Lar-
son and Rahni Smith; 10 years)
Erica Baldock; 15 years) Donna
Dick and Vonda Gunderson; 20
years) Jean Holter and Victoria
Johnson; 25 years) Elaine Aune,
Genelle Dale, Kori Fenske and
Alice Simengaard. Again, thank
you to these employees for their
many years of service. We are
very fortunate at Luther Memorial
Home to have so many wonderful
employees who provide such
wonderful care.
Finally I would just like to talk
briefly about the many services
FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR - Brett R. Ulrich
Luther Memorial Home
Mayville, ND
Spring - Summer 2018
that Luther Memorial Home has
to offer including our Sun Center
Apartments. These spacious
apartments offer services such as
noon meals, housekeeping, utili-
ties, cable TV and security in-
cluded in the rent. We also offer
spacious meeting areas and activi-
ties that will keep you busy. This
is what I would call “hassle free”
living. All this is done for about
half the price of the larger cities.
Stop in, we will be happy to give
you a tour of these beautiful
apartments and show you what
we have to offer. Again, have a
wonderful and safe summer.

As I write this, it is yet another
windy day. I remember hearing
someone say that if you have nev-
er been to North Dakota, then you
really don’t know what wind is.
The Bible has many images of
God acting through wind or being
present in wind. From Genesis 1,
we read of how the wind from
God blew over the waters. In
Exodus 14, God used a mighty
wind to part the Red Sea. Jesus
likens the Spirit of God to the
wind, which we cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going
(John 3:8). And the Holy Spirit
came upon the first disciples on
Pentecost Day in the rush of a
violent wind (Acts 2:1-12).
We know the power of the wind
that blows across our land. Yet
even on a blustery day, it is a
small thing compared to the awe-
some power of God’s Spirit work-
ing in us and among us. Some-
times, the Spirit is a gusty wind
that pushes us to serve our Lord in
ways we had never imagined.
Sometimes, the Spirit is like a
gentle breeze that soothes and
consoles us in times of sorrow.
Most often we experience this
wind of the Spirit through the
words and actions of others.
I sense the wind of God’s Spirit
blowing through the kindness and
care of Luther Memorial Home’s
staff, residents, visitors, and vol-
unteers – including the visits of
Caring Ministry members. I have
heard people say that they hadn’t
expected to work at, live in, or
visit here – but then they felt a
nudge and discovered that this is
where God was calling them to
be, and they found a community
and a home here. I thank God for
all of you who provide care, sup-
port, and love within the walls of
Luther Memorial Home. To me,
it is like a refreshing and life-
giving breeze.
So let’s hold on to our hats on
the next windy day – and look
around us, everyday, to see the
people that God has provided to
inspire and support us. Let’s be
open to the new things God is
calling us to do. And let’s trust
that God is with us always – to
fill us with life, joy, peace, and
hope – to fill us with God’s abid-
ing presence and love.
In Christ,
Pastor Diane Krumm
Coming
Soon!
New Medicare Cards will be sent out
for your loved ones.
Please make sure you give us a copy
to update our records.
Following the presentation all
enjoyed banana splits. Tuesday
was Western day. All were en-
couraged to dress in western wear.
There was a game of horse shoes
in the morning and a petting zoo
in the afternoon. Thank you to
Rebecca and Jay Hodgson for
bringing their donkey, pony and
chickens, Shelby Krueger for
bringing their large Great Dane,
and to Natasha Jones for bringing
a bunny. Wednesday brought a
Polka Dot Social served with ---
you guessed it dip n dot ice cream
and cotton candy. Special music
by Chuck Fox brought lots of toe
tapping, clapping, singing along
and even a few dancers. A good
time was had by all. Thursday
was Throwback Thursday and
people dressed in a variety of
decades from the 50’s to the 80’s.
We couldn’t celebrate Syttende
Mai without Shirley Olson’s fa-
mous rommegrot. Lefse was also
served and Strull made by the
Sons of Norway members. Thank
you to Becky Gunderson for mak-
ing a Norwegian Wedding cake
and giving a presentation on Nor-
way, to Gudrun Harstad for
dressing up in her Norwegian
dress and singing Norwegian and
to Elaine Klath for the beautiful
music. Friday was Crazy Sock
and Hat day. Thank you to all the
staff who were good sports and
dressed up.
To celebrate National
Police day the local sher-
iff’s department was invit-
ed to “Coffee with a Cop”.
Thank you to Kelly Tvedt,
Tony Ernst and Ray We-
ber for spending time with
us, I know the residents
enjoyed visiting and get-
ting to know you. Thank
you to all the law enforce-
ment and emergency
personnel for all they do
to protect our community.
Mary and her quilting
gang organized a wonder-
ful Quilt show as a finale
for our residents. We are
totally amazed at the
beautiful quilts that were
displayed and the time it
takes to make one. We
will look forward to quilt-
ing with you again in the
fall.
It was a warm and sunny
day, but that didn’t stop
the residents from plant-
ing. Oh the feel of the
warm dirt and getting it
under their fingernails. I hope you all have been keep-ing up to date with reading our weekly article “Greetings from the Home Front” printed in the Traill County Tribune and Steele Coun-ty Press, written by Molly Lena-burg.

After a long winter our resi-
dents love to go outside, and we
like to take them outside as much
as possible. We do try to take
precautions and there is sunscreen
available at each nurse’s station
and in the activity room. There are
also hats available by the door of
the courtyard for residents use.
Congratulations to Terry An-
derson and Dawn Ludwig who
were crowned 2018 King and
Queen at our Valentine’s party.
Watch for them during the Sum-
merfest parade.
Luther Memorial Home is very
fortunate to have a supportive
community and great volunteers.
On April 14th over 60 volunteers
were recognized with a luncheon.
Our theme was, “You are an Im-
portant Piece of Luther Memorial
Home”. A friendly game of Fam-
ily Feud was played. Staff mem-
bers expressed their appreciation
and thanked volunteers in attend-
ance and a slide show was played.
Cool weather and a warm heart.
A smile, a hug and a hope that the
3rd graders have a wonderful sum-
mer is what the residents ex-
pressed at our 3rd grade grandpar-
ent visit finale. Our residents
have looked forward to the
monthly visits from the 3rd grad-
ers.
Memories are made. Thank you
to all that attended our Celebra-
tion of Women. Musical selec-
tions were provided by Zoey Ag-
nes, Kyra Mortenson and Alexis
Morowski accompanied by Otto
Muecke.
Fun, Fun, Fun is what we used
to describe Nursing Home week at
Luther Memorial Home. Our
overall theme was “United We
Care”. Monday all were invited to
dress up as their favorite superhe-
ro. Residents and staff played
Resident Rights balloon pop in the
morning and staff members were
recognized for their years of ser-
vice and those nominated for the
North Dakota Long Term Care
Association Caregiver award.

As I walked in the hall, I was greeted by a cheerful call
“Good morning Esther darlin, how are you today?” I love
it. I like living at Luther Memorial Home, there are rea-
sons why I do.
When I first arrived here I realized everyone that
worked here was calling me by name. I was motivated to
try do the same. It takes a special kind of person to work
at a nursing home. Qualities of people working here in-
clude: being friendly, loving, patient, having a healthy
sense of humor and a facing of the truth. These young
people know life is not always easy. We do not become
more graceful as we age, but we can laugh about it. Peo-
ple working here will laugh with us when we need it,
and we are stronger for our laughter. They help us be
the best we can be. We have also found we care
about each other. When I go to bed at night, this
is my home, and I do not wish to be elsewhere.
As residents we have also learned to love
and care for each other. How well we do
here has a lot to do with our attitude
towards ourselves and the people
around us. I know the staff truly
cares for each and every one
of us.

Finally the nice weather we all wait for is here! Along with the nice
weather come the birds and flowers we all love to see out our window. To
make things easier for everyone we have purchased hangers that mount on
the wall outside resident windows to hang your bird feeders on.
So please do not bring any Shepard’s hooks or other rods to stick in the
ground. If there is not a hook by your resident’s window please ask and we
will gladly install one for you. Enjoy nature’s beautiful gifts this summer!

“Scooby… A Residents’ Best Friend” Luther Memorial Home’s vision was to have a dog in the facility that would help meet the emotional needs of our residents by providing unconditional love and be- come a part of our home. To promote supervised, casual, and spontane- ous inter-action between ani- mals and people that would enhance quali-ty of life. Scooby has done that for us. Scooby has walked the halls of Luther Memorial Home since Decem-ber of 2010. She was born on October 25th 2007. She will be 11 years old in Octo- ber. Scooby will occasion-ally put on her magicians hat and show us her dis- appearing act, somehow getting out of the courtyard fence. Thank you to the staff members who go the ex- tra mile for our beloved Scooby. We can’t imagine life without her.
