DIRECTORS SADDLE

Remember ALL RIDES Are Alcohol Free!!!

If you see one of our members enjoying adult beverages in our photos, it is either not a riding event, or in the event of an overnighter, we have reached our destination. For any

questions or concerns about a ride contact our Lead Road Captain Jim “Speedo” Larson [email protected]

The tragedy of October 1st resulted in precious lives being lost and that of many being changed in a split second. A change that will forever be imbedded in our memory. For so many individuals, that dreadful night will be a haunt-ing memory for many years to come. The loss of life is never easy for any of us, but to loose lives because of one crazed person and for his own personal gratification is in it’s self sick. The Las Vegas community has shown it is a community of resilience. That horrific night has brought so many people together. Together to help each other cope and in time, heal. Our Law Enforcement, Medical and Fire per-sonnel all played such an important role in bringing this mad mans rein of terror to an end. Brave by-standers also stepped up to help strangers fleeing for their safety and those mortally injured. They joined forces to attend to the hundreds of individuals that desperately needed their help. With the thoughts of that night now fresh in your mind, I encourage you, when you see the men and women of Law Enforcement, Medical and Fire personnel, take a moment to shake their hands. Tell each of them thank you for the job they do every day. Let them know they are needed and appreciated for the sacrifice they give every day to our community. As we go into the next couple of months our chapter will be actively recruiting new board members from ambassa-dors to Director. If you have ever thought about being more active in the chapter, this is your chance. I encourage you to take a look and consider the opportunity to serve in one of these positions. It really is a very rewarding ex-perience. For any questions you may have, feel free to contact any one of the officers. Be safe, Ride safe!

ROAD CAPTAIN’S NEWS

“FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU”

How many times do we hear that when we ride? LOTS! And it probably gets old to some of us, but it is a very important rule. If we don’t follow this simple rule, the ride could be a total disaster. The Road Captain (Lead) and his/her Deuce lead the ride and are the ones that we follow. If just one rider does not FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU, we are no longer an or-ganized group, it looks bad and it is not safe. As Road Captains, it is our goal to move the group down the road as easy and safely as possible. At times we need to change lanes and we do this in two different ways: 1. The Lead Rear Road Captain will block the lane we want to move into from on-coming traffic. After the lane is clear of traffic, the Ride Lead (Front) Road Captain and Deuce take the group to that lane. This is called taking the lane from the BACK. 2. We can also take the lane we want to move into from the FRONT. This is accomplished by placing two Road Captains (Rabbits) into the lane that we want to move into and have them gradually slow down, slowing traffic to clear the lane for a short time. When that lane is clear, the Lead (Front) Road Captain and Deuce move the group over slowly into that lane in front of the two Rabbits. After the group is safely into the new lane, the Rabbits are now behind the group, opening the lane that we had been in for traffic. Taking the lane from the front is a faster and safer way to move the group into another lane, and it keeps us from tying up traffic so long. This is because taking it from the rear we have to wait for the lane to clear of traffic. By taking the lane from the front, every rider has to “FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU”. If ONE rider does not do this, we have part of the group already in the lane we are moving to and part of the group behind the Rabbits that were “Protecting” the lane we were moving into. This usually happens when a rider leaves a large gap in the group or is not atten-tive.

Page 5: SILVER EAGLE NEWSsnhoglv.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Newsletter_2017_Nov.pdf · Briefing: 8:45am Leave: 9:00am Location: ABC Join us as we venture to a new part of AZ and ride

Page 5

Sometimes they are so far back, they lose track of the group in front of them. The rider sudden-ly looks up and sees the group in the other lane and they instantly move over before moving in front of the Rabbits that have the lane blocked, and they end up right behind the two Rabbits that are blocking the lane for the group to move into. What that rider doesn’t realize is that he/she has just moved into a lane that is not protected and the riders behind are FOLLOWING. This is what we don’t want to happen. If all riders are attentive and FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU, this won’t happen. It is not my intent to be disrespectful to anyone by writing this article. I just want to remind everyone to be attentive, FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU, don’t leave large GAPS and ride safe to our destination. I have been a Road Captain for over thirteen years and love every minute of it. I was trained by some very special guys/gals that were dedicated to Safe Riding. I do not know of any other group that has a Road Captain group with policies and procedures like we have. Most other groups only have a Lead and a Lead Rear to get you to your destination and you are mainly on your own. We have been commended by other H.O.G. groups. Chapter Manager Steve Richey is a LVMPD Officer who trains their Motor Officers and he also assists in training our Road Cap-tains.

HELP WANTED Road Captains

Hey members, we could use some dedicated, responsible people to join our Road Captain train-ing course and become a SNHOG Road Captain. You need to be a SNHOG member for six months and have an Advanced Riders card. Our Road Captains take the CPR and First Aid classes every two years. We have classroom and on-the-road Road Captain training. Fill out an application and give it to Director Roddy Hopper or Lead Road Captain Speedo Larson.

EVENT PHOTOGRAGHS

Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round!!! Although Rolando Adriano, Chester McQuillan, Mel Johanson, and Sharon Gordon are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to [email protected] and they’ll get added to the gallery. The name and date of the event must be included in the email. Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at www.snhoglv.com “Photographing, filming, recording, and videotaping of activities and events will be occurring at our events.
