  The   20th   of   May   1927   marked   the  25th  anniversary  of  the  establishment  of  the  Republic of Cuba. For that occasion, the Ministry of  Communications issued a commemorative stamp of the    high  face  value  of  25  cents,  well  over  all  established  postal  rates  for  any  postal  service.  This  stamp was only used on  the  first day of  issue and  it  is  very  seldom  found  on  a  cover  that  circulated other than on its first day of issue (Fig.1). 

  The Ministry of Communications  issued  two types of postcards  for  the occasion, most of which circulated within the country, although, a few were sent abroad. Almost all of them were sent as regular mail  ; however,  there are  some  that were  sent via registered  mail.  Both  of  those  sent  abroad  and those  sent  via  registered  mail  are  very  rare.  I consider the postcard shown in Figure 2 to be very rare as  it was sent registered to Germany.    In all of our  years  as  philatelists  we  had  never  seen  a  registered  Cuban  postcard  mailed  abroad.  We would like to know if anyone owns  another of these postcards  sent  registered  abroad.  The  postcard shown in Figure 3 was sent via registered mail from Santiago de Cuba to Havana with a friendly message 

  El  20  de  mayo  de  1927  se  cumplieron  25 años  del  establecimiento  de  la  República  en  Cuba. Para  esa  fecha,  el  Ministerio  de  Comunicaciones emitió  un  sello  conmemorativo  con  un  alto    valor facial de 25 centavos, muy por encima de las tarifas establecidas para cualquier servicio postal. Este sello sólo  se  utilizó  el  primer  día,  y  en  muy  contadas ocasiones podemos verlo en una cubierta circulada fuera del primer día (Fig.1).

El Ministerio de Comunicaciones  emitió dos tipos de  tarjetas para  la  fecha  las  cuales  circularon casi  en  su  totalidad  dentro  de  nuestro  país.  No obstante, algunas  fueron enviadas al extranjero. Casi  todas  circularon  por  vía  ordinaria  aunque existen algunas que circularon certificadas. Tanto si fueron  certificadas,  como  si  fueron  enviadas  al extranjero,  las  podemos  considerar  escasas.  La tarjeta de la Figura 2 la considero rara ya que fue enviada    a  Alemania  de  forma  certificada.  Nunca habíamos  visto  una  tarjeta  postal  cubana  enviada certificada  al  extranjero.  Nos  gustaría  saber  si alguien tiene alguna otra de estas tarjetas que haya sido  enviada  al  extranjero  certificada.  La  Figura  3 muestra  una  de  estas  tarjetas  enviada  certificada desde  Santiago  de  Cuba  a  La  Habana  con  un mensaje amistoso para la ocasión (Fig.3a). Estas dos tarjetas las hemos clasificado como Tipo I. 

  El  segundo  tipo  de  tarjeta  tiene  el  mismo formato, con   pequeñas diferencias   y con otro tipo de  letra,  y  la  hemos  clasificado  como  Tipo  II. Mostramos las diferencias entre ellas en la Figura 4. Las  tarjetas  del  Tipo  II  son  muy  escasas  y curiosamente  las  dos  que  conocemos  fueron puestas  en  correos  antes  del  20  de mayo  (ver  las Figs. 5 y 6). 

   La  segunda  tarjeta  Tipo  II  que  conocemos está fechada el 19 de mayo (ver  la Fig. 6) y  lleva un mensaje en el reverso alusivo a la celebración de las

for  the  occasion  (Fig.3a). We  have  classified  both postcards as Type I. 

  The second type of postcard shows the same format with  slight differences and a different  type of  letter  font  and we  have  classified  it  as  type  II.  The differences between the two types  is shown  in Figure 4. The postcards of Type II are very rare, and curiously,  the  two  the  two examples  that we have  found were  placed  in  the mail  before  the  20th  of May (see Figs. 5  and 6). 

  The  second  Type  II  postcard  that  we  have found  is dated on May 19  (see Fig. 6) and carries a message on  its back  referencing  the  celebration of the Silver Anniversary of the Republic that seems to have been drafted by a member of  the Ministry of Communications itself for the occasion.

remained  unused.  They  were  used  several  years later  with  surcharges  celebrating  new  events  relevant to the history of the Republic. 

  The first one of these surcharges was created 

to celebrate the inauguration of the national air lines 

on  October  27,  1930.  The  red  surcharge  reads: 

"Correo Aéreo Nacional /__10¢       10¢__” followed 

by  two  bars  across  the  bottom  of  the  stamp  

nullifying  the  original  denomination  of  the  stamp 

and the legend "25 Años de República" (Fig. 7).

  The  second  surcharge was  created  to  cele‐brate  the  First  Centenary  of  the  introduction  of  the  railroad  in  Cuba  on  November  19,  1937.  This bluish  green  surcharge  read  "Primer  Centenario  /  Ferrocarril en Cuba / 10¢       10¢”, shows an image of the inaugural train engine, and as in the previous surcharge,  has  two  bars  obliterating  the  original  denomination  of  the  stamp  and  the  legend  "25 Años de República" at the bottom of the stamp (Fig. 8).

  La segunda sobrecarga se creó para celebrar el  Primer  Centenario  de  la  introducción  del ferrocarril  en  Cuba  el  19  de  noviembre  de  1937. Esta sobrecarga de color verde azulado  lee "Primer Centenario  /  Ferrocarril  en Cuba  /  10¢              10¢”, muestra  una  imagen  de  la  locomotora  inaugural entre  estas  dos  últimas  cifras,  y  al  igual  que  en  el  caso  anterior,  lleva  dos  barras  anulando  la denominación  original  del  sello  y  la  leyenda  "25 Años de República" en la base del sello  (Fig. 8).
