Welcome to the First
Annual
We are delighted to bring the residents of San Jose and the surrounding Silicon Valley region, an international fine art fair they can now call their own. This landmark inaugural event, presents a carefully selected lineup of 50 + top-tier galleries, hailing from 10 countries.
While presenting a world-class selection of over 300 respected artists, the Fair creates a boutique feel as to provide fairgoers with a cogent and comprehensive viewing experience.
I want to thank Paul Young, from LA’s Young Projects, for serving adroitly as SVC’s Moving Image Curator. At SVC, Mr. Young has championed an important and intelligent dialogue among collectors, curators, galleries, artists, journalists and developers to create the Moving Image Experience, sponsored by Epson. We proudly present the finest in moving image art, for acquisition, while showcasing the intersection of art and technology. Moving image art is becoming more mainstream in many galleries today and an essential medium for an increasing number of contemporary artists. The following pages outline the many special and “must-see” video art and digital installations.
I want to acknowledge and thank the Pace Gallery for their converting of the VIP Lounge Into a world-class art exhibition with their intelligent curating.
SVC has assembled many forward-thinking museum curators and art advisors in the region to help enhance your experience. Fairgoers will benefit from the advice on starting and growing an art collection and the uniqueness of the region effect on its artists and patrons. Please join us in one or more of our thoughtful panel discussions geared to inform and inspire. We also offer a Saturday Silicon Valley Modern Home Tour to explore examples of the region’s best architecture as fine art in itself and motivational ideas on how to display art works in the Fair in your own home.
Meet our 2014 Arts patrons of the year, Yvonne and Michael Nevens, as well as SVC Distinguished Media Artist, Gary Hill. The SVC Innovator Awardees are UK’s duo of Jon Thomson and Alison Criaghead. We are pleased that Opening Night was able to benefit an important local institution, the San Jose Museum of Art, as well as a rousing Friday night Monotype Marathon Party, at the nearby San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. I also want to recognize Kerry Adams-Hapner, deputy director of economic development and City of San Jose director of cultural affairs, for her tireless inspiration and vision in helping to bring this watershed visual arts event to the community. I want to thank the 55 regional museums and cultural institutions, which have fully embraced this Fair.
I invite you to explore the cutting-edge artworks offered by our exhibitors. Go ahead. Indulge yourself. There has never been a better selection presented in Silicon Valley, or time to invest in art. Experience the satisfaction of hanging a work of art in your home where you can enjoy it daily. Make your visit to SVC a lasting memory.
Sincerely,
Rick FriedmanFounder, Executive Director

Moving Image Experiece Details
Gary Hill’s “Depth Charge” (2009/2012)The newest work by Gary Hill, is simultaneously dreamier and more exposed. While a ghostly blue guitarist on the gallery wall (Bill Frisell, distorted to the point of being liquid in appearance) serenades an abstract figure nearby—Hill himself, in a drastically altered state, describes what he’s experiencing to his wife, who gently guides him through his “trip.” Artist represented by James Harris Gallery.

Inspired by the Valie Export piece, “Tap and Touch”, Trenda’s performance will focus on a personal space in regards to mobile devices. The artist will be completely covered in a synthetic suit with forty small LCD cell phone screens. The image on the devises will change depending on how far away the viewer is from the artist. Public InstallationGustave Mahlor Symphony No. 2, JungSan Senim
Jungsan Senim is a South Korean artist and monk. One of his masterpieces, Gustave Mahlor Symphony No. 2, a sculpture made of razor blades, was inspired by the titled composer’s symphony 9 and 2 which tells the tale of resurrection, from death to life, which is deeply connected to Buddhist concept. Jungsan uses the razor blades as a way to express the dichotomy of danger and beauty. The small nuance of the work is that the viewer is able to see their self reflected in the metal blades as a mirror. The artist is represented by the Sandra Lee gallery.
Artist Spotlights Thirty-minute sessions providing fairgoers an intimate conservation with selected artists in the artists’ gallery booths. The artist describes the scope, vision, inspiration and goals of his work giving fairgoers a better understanding of the creations.
Artist Spotlight: Jungsan Senim Friday, 12:30-1pm – Sandra Lee Gallery booth 107
Jungsan Senim is a South Korean artist, monk, and chef of an international temple vegetarian restaurant in Seoul. Born in 1946, self taught artist, Jungsan discovered a visual language to express his spiritual practices late in his life. Originally Kim Yun-Sik, he become a monk at the age of 15 and later was ordained as Jungsan Senim; Jungsan meaning “quiet mountain” and Senim meaning “monk.
As a monk, he pulls great meaning from Buddhist teachings and his natural surroundings to create works with the use of common materials such as match boxes and razor blades in addition to his performance art practice. Jungsan is also a jazz pianist and his work is often motivated by the rhythmic nature of music. His work has been shown in South Korea, France, and the US. Sandra Lee Gallery introduced his work to the US two years ago; since then he has gained tremendous fame and many collectors from California to New York.

Artist Spotlights
Artist Spotlight: John BrillFri., April 11, 7-8pm – Kent Fine Art booth 300 With book signing of The Photography of John Brill by Leah Ollman.
John Brill has been making photographic records of his everyday existence since 1959. Self-taught in photography, Brill’s shift to art followed his formal studies within the field of physiological psychology.
At the age of thirty, Brill committed himself to his vision of developing bodies of work that would be psychologically resonant in some universal sense. Exhibiting frequently since the 1980s, Brill has produced several thematically coherent, discrete bodies of work including Family Holiday Album, Engrams, Ennui, Reliquary—which are the subject of a monograph entitled The Photography of John Brill, written by Leah Ollman—as well as a subsequent series, Cosmophilia.
Brill’s intimate handcrafting involves techniques of image creation and production that today have been largely supplanted by digital processes. Even as many of the materials that the artist works with are becoming obsolete and are no longer being manufactured, he continues to create his prints by hand in a darkroom.
SVC Artist Spotlight: Jack StuppinSat., April 12, 1:30-2pm – In the ACA Galleries booth 106
Jack Stuppin, 80, is unique, not only is he an accomplished artist but Jack is one of the forefathers of Silicon Valley. Jack has a history that began before “Silicon Valley” was named in 1971. In 1966 he helped found American Microsystems. This was the first company to make MOS chips in commercial quantities and the first to make a microprocessor. In 1979 Jack helped found another Silicon Valley semiconductor company, Applied Microcircuits and later, Autodesk. All the while Jack was painting twenty hours a week, both nights and weekends.
His paintings are in many institutional, corporate, and individual collections. Over ten museums across the country have his work in their collections. Three of his paintings are in the San Jose Museum of Art, where he had a featured exhibition in 2010.

Providing a place where this particular genre of artists can not only show their work but interact with fellow artists to collaborate and investigate the many varied ventures into the unknown is paramount. Devoted to the representation of international contemporary artists in a variety of mediums, Dillon Gallery exhibits established, mid career, and young emerging artists whose works convey our approach to visual content. Formalism and structure carries through the various styles and mediums we present with an overall interest in the personal content behind the artists’ aesthetics. The gallery has published substantial monographs on several artists we represent in our dedication to expose a new wave of global talent to the Chelsea audience. Our Asian “Nihonga” program is one approach by the gallery to highlight artists working within their cultural environments. Be it a young Norwegian artist, an African American photographer, or Chinese and Japanese Nihonga painters, Dillon Gallery continues to act as a forum for regional voices across the artistic landscape.

Since 1952, Fleisher/Ollman Gallery has been one of the world’s premiere sources of self-taught art, having helped define the field and establish major public and private collections of this once-marginalized group of artists. Simultaneously, the gallery has exhibited important modern and contemporary work aligned with specific aesthetic interests—text art, collage, mysticism, obsessive mark-making—work that transcends any imposed binary distinctions between vernacular and academic practices. Fleisher/Ollman intersperses significant academic surveys with the long-term nurture of emerging talent.

The Fine Art Society is one of the oldest galleries in London and was founded in 1876 by a group of knowledgeable art collectors and it is the oldest gallery in London. Since its inception the gallery has always championed and worked directly with living artists, giving The Camden Town Group their first show and holding historic shows that have since entered the canon of art history. It is at this location that Whistler invented the concept of a solo exhibition – a precursor for every contemporary gallery today.
The Contemporary Gallery was established in 2005 and the new 1,000 square foot space added a progressive dimension to the already prestigious and established history of the gallery whilst retaining independent programming. The Contemporary team has embraced the twentieth and nineteenth century heritage of the gallery and increased cross-cultural links, particularly in Asia and Australia.

Joel Mesler’s Rental Gallery’s concept involved renting gallery space to out of town galleries. The project was developed in Los Angeles and New York for five years. In May 2009 Rental began representing a small roster of artists and for a year it put on outstanding solo and group shows at the New York Chinatown space. In May 2010 Joel partnered with Carol Cohen, formerly Jay Jopling’s private collection curator and secondary market expert at London’s White Cube and in September 2010 they moved to a new space which was renamed UNTITLED. Since its inception, the gallery has presented solo shows by artists that were previously on Rental’s roster, such as Brendan Fowler, Phil Wagner and Matthew Chambers, in addition to David Adamo’s first major solo presentation in New York. In 2012 we worked closely with MoMA PS1 on Henry Taylor’s mid-career retrospective, which coincided with the artist’s solo show at the gallery. Recent exhibitions have included Trending (Parker Ito, Haley Mellin, Brad Troemel, and Artie Vierkant) and a solo exhibition by Kour Pour.
