Home Coming!
It is indeed times of change and President Obamas upcoming visit
to India reflects it. Just two decades ago, U.S. was the green pas-ture out of which not only the native companies but also several In-
dian entrepreneurs built some of the worlds best of class products. Buttoday, post three economic upheavals, this market has begun to lose
lustre and the focus has shifted to the new emerging markets, espe-cially India. The upcoming visit of President Obama to India is a tes-timony to this. Now for U.S., India is no more just a land of skilled
labours but rather a potential market that will create opportunities forthe country and help bolster its frail economy.
But then the Indian market always was a potential one, despite itscomplex and demanding nature, which every other industry player ex-
cept the IT had realized. Surviving this market is the acid test that one
can perhaps take before setting up a global footprint. But in the lastdecade Indian technology companies like Tejas Networks and
Roamware proved that by developing world class products for the do-mestic market; they were able to enter the global markets with ease.
Indian entrepreneurs who once set up shop in U.S. too have nowstarted focusing on Indian market for the next big growth wave, a trend
we observed when we reviewed several companies for the 13th edition
of si100, an annual listing of the top 100 technology companiesfounded and managed by Indians in the U.S. This is true home com-
ing! This years si100 listing not only represents the continuing rise and
glory of the Indian entrepreneur in high-tech but also identifies com-panies impacting the marketplace. The companies in this years list
display the characteristics of long-term visibility, sustained growth, business focus, profitability and customer and employee value-cre-
ation.
We salute each and every one of these entrepreneurs for their lead-ership, and particularly for their unrelenting dedication in building their
companies. Each and every entrepreneur on this list demonstrates theutmost passion for building lasting enterprises and exudes confidence
that they will succeed i n tackling the current economic conditions. Wecongratulate the 100 finalists for achieving this vote of respect from i n-
dustry leaders and wish each and every one of them a great future.
In this issue, we have chosen Vernalis Systems to be on the coverof this issue, as we found its journey unique and impressive. In a time
when many IT services are striving to sustain their growth by entering
several service areas, Vernalis Systems continues to bag million dollardeals globally by just offering niche development services from India.
I hope you enjoy the issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it
together. As always, lets keep in touch

software or prototype available fortheir specific requirements, Vernalis
Systems has a team deployed that isworking with the client and under-
standing the project specs and re-quirements. Today, the International
Player Acquisition System (IPAS), a
biometric system, is under develop-ment and soon would be ready for re-
altime application.Mobile is another area where the
company has a strong foothold, as it
constitutes about 30 percent of thebusiness. We started mobile devel-opment back in the days of PALM
and over the years we have done nu-
merous projects on Symbian andBlackberry and today on iPhone and
Android, says Chandra. Now it haseven moved over to developing apps
on iPad. Most of the projects in thissegment essentially involve develop-
ing key features of certain enterprise
applications as an extension on anymobile platform.
Now with the iPhone and Androidslowly displacing Blackberry within
enterprises, the company too has
begun to explore opportunities in thisarena. One of the recent applications
it has built on iPhone is WeCab, a
cab sharing application for US mar-kets that is currently productized for
New York. Quiet satisfied with the product, the customer now plans to
extend it to other geographies as well. For Vernalis Systems, it is all
about staying in tune with the trendsin the industry. Within just a few
months of the launch of iPad, the
company is already geared up with aninteractive learning application for it.
Chandra and team have developed an
interactive activity book, a story bookwith pictures, where the story line
changes depending on the activitychosen.
Business intelligence is the third part of the companys business and
constitutes about 20 percent of the
revenue. It soon plans to launch its

Though there were several ERPand financial applications available in
the market from large software ven-dors, there was none that suited and
understood the tasks required byMLB. The financial application had
to be built from the scratch. Despite a
myriad of large IT services compa-nies in the industry, today there are
only few who provide custom appli-cation development. MLB ap-
proached Vernalis Systems, a small
IT services company based in NewYork. Understanding the criticality ofthe project the company, in a very
short time, built the solution. Today,
post the successful application devel-opment work, MLB has become one
of its major customers. The history ofthe company is filled with a lot of
such success stories.Founded in 1999, Vernalis Sys-
tems is a pure play IT services com-
pany, specializing in critical customapplications development across the
Web and mobile. Today, a decadesince its humble beginnings, the com-
pany has created a strong footprint asa gourmet IT services provider along
with additional service lines of engi-neering and media. They count sev-eral large players across areas like
healthcare, energy, sports and enter-tainment, private equity, workspace
technologies, marketing services,emergency preparedness response,
travel, banking, compliance,
and manufacturing as their customers.
The Birth of the Company
Vernalis Systems was founded by in-
dividuals with immense experience invarious aspects of IT by having
worked in some of the major organi-zations around the world. The team of
professionals leading the company is
composed of experts in their respec-tive fields, having the breadth and
depth of experience that spans acrossa wide technical spectrum and subject
matter expertise. From day one, the core philoso-
phy of the company was to build sus-tainable systems and not body shop
like other large IT players. While inthe initial years the company started
as a consulting firm, it soon re-posi-tioned it self as a critical IT services
provider. From servicing a few large
niche clients in New York and sur-rounding areas the company slowly
broadened its customer base andtoday it has a grip on several key mar-
kets including US, Europe, and India
in the areas of Technology, Engineer-ing, and Media.
The company in 2003 set up their
India operation, which serves as thedevelopment center. From a cus-
tomer point of view, we specialize incritical applications. Most of the ap-
plications we develop are not cookie
cutter kind. There is a grave challengewhen it comes to just maintaining the
resource and technical competency asthe development work happens across
different platforms like iPad, An-
droid, and traditional Web applicationsimultaneously, explains Bala Chan-
dra, CEO, Vernalis Systems. This iswhere the companys specialty lies in.
We do not aspire to become a largescale IT company but rather a spe-
cialty gourmet provider, he adds.
Small is Beautiful
In an age where every one is aimingat grabbing a large market share and
raking in big moola by stepping intoevery possible area of IT services,
Vernalis Systems believes in standingapart by offering specialized critical
custom application development. In custom applications develop-
ment, the challenge starts right fromthe requirement tracking stage. Since
the requirements continue to evolve, developing an application around it is
like trying to shoot a moving target.
Since this kind of work requires in-depth technological expertise, one of
the biggest challenges for the com-pany has been getting the right peo-
ple. It is precisely the reason we
chose value and not volume in termsof resources. We want to be the
SWAT team, where failure is not an
option, says Chandra. Today, 11years since inception, Vernalis Sys-
tems is 120 people strong and onlyaims to scale up to 300 i n the comingyears.
The Three Pillars of Business
But where it lacks in resourcestrength, it makes up with the varied
technology expertise it brings to the
customers. Its three service areas aretechnology, engineering, and media.
A technology neutral company, itbroadly classifies the IT business into
three segments - traditional softwaredevelopment, mobile, and business
intelligence. Since the spectrum oftraditional software is very wide, the
company takes up projects only
where a packaged solution does notfit a customers requirement. For ex-
ample, the company is currently de-veloping a biometric system for a
client in Dominican Republic. Sincethere is no pre-developed or packaged

Customer is King and Employees
are Assets
For Chandra, it was a conscious de-cision to keep the company a rela-
tively small enterprise offeringniche services. But in an age of cut
throat competition, where its largerpeers are striving hard to win cus-
tomers on the basis of human re-
source and other infrastructurecapabilities, Vernalis Systems treads
a different path. For us, it is not the
number of customers that matter butrather the length and depth of cus-tomer engagement. At any given
time we have 25 active projects that
vary anywhere between threemonths to 2 years, says Chandra.
Empathy to customers is theunderlying culture within the com-
pany. Unlike most vendors who acton the orders of the customers, at Ver-
nalis Systems, the idea is to involve
with every aspect of the project rightfrom the beginning. Instead of wait-
ing for the customer to provide spec-ifications, the company helps think
them through the requirement. Sincethe company has a lateral experience
in different industries, it sits with thecustomer right from the early re-
quirement definition stage and helps
them think through the process. Be-cause of the strong technology back-
ground the company brings to thetable, it is also able to suggest the
right tools the customer can look atdeploying in order to lessen the cost
and make the process simpler. The
involvement in clients business is sodeep that by the time the project is
completed, they treat us like consult-ants rather than just developers. This
is the big differentiator, believesChandra.
It is this, in combination with
honesty and transparency, that hasworked wonders for Vernalis Sys-
tems. Every customer is made awareof the fact that all the development
work is being done in its develop-ment center in Chennai. Apart from
the 110 engineers at Chennai, the
company has six project managers inits US office and two in London and
Germany. These managers act as boththe cultural and business interfaces of
the company, thereby providing a
level of comfort to the customers. While design and architecture are
done from Chennai, the managers on-site focus on business analysis and
project management.
In order to keep the communica-
tion clear between the company andits customers, the company has de-
veloped an internal Web based proj-ect management tool - COLLABRIA.
Since every project is a custom appli-
cation development, the requirementskeep pouring in time to time, and
hence everything about a project isdocumented with in COLLABRIA.
Since everyone from customers, proj-ect managers, developers, and techni-
cal architects have access to it, one
can monitor the progress at any giventime, thus cutting down the commu-
nication and response time betweenthe company and the customer. Soft-
ware development is a human job anderrors are inevitable. Thus we believe
to be open in our communicationfrom the beginning thereby forging a
credible relationship with the cus-
tomers. Collabria helps bridging the
gap, says Chandra. The relationship that the company
has forged with its customers is so
deep that today most of the new proj-ects come only via customer refer-
ence. A testimonial to this is reflected
in their significant client retention
rate and the fact that they have startedor are in process of starting joint ven-
tures with several of their customers. Not only have their customers pro-
vided several credible leads that re-
sult in tangible projects, but VernalisSystems has also started technology
centric joint ventures with their cus-tomers. These joint ventures span
various verticals including healthcare
services, pharmaceutical, and social
networking. Most recently, they de- ployed a mobile application: Con-
nect5 with one of their long-standingcustomers. Connect5 is a social net-
working application that rivals
foursquare. Connect5 is a location-based iPhone application that shows
you what a venue is like and howyour friends are doing in realtime.
In order to further enhance cus-tomers trust in the company, it con-
stantly conducts audits to ensure the
standards are met. Clients are also in-vited to the companys premises an-
nually in order to get a first handexperience in the companys work
culture and ethics. While customers are the utmost
priority for the company, it is not un-observant to the employees who are
the real assets. Even though the team
is separated geographically, the work-
ing culture melts the time zones anddistances, giving the global clients anexperience of working with one team.
Every professional in Vernalis Sys-tems is groomed to be proficient in
multiple technologies, handling vari-
ous development methodologies,
conversant in working with globalclients from diversified domains.
With an appropriate mentoring pro-gram in place, the management
strives hard to groom the next gener-
ation of leaders within the organiza-tion and inculcate in them the values
it stands for. Because of the nature ofthe projects and the challenges the
teams face, the company believes thatits professionals are much more ex-
perienced and industry savvy in com- parison with current industry
standards.
Our open and transparent way ofworking means all our employees di-
rectly see and experience that theirsuccess, their teams success, the
clients success and the organiza-tions success are directly linked with
each other; which greatly fosters an
exceptional level of personal motiva-tion and inspiration, which is one of
the key ingredients of our success, says Chandra.
This transparency, along withtheir core competencies, has served
Vernalis Systems well in breaking
ground within new cultures. It has de-veloped a significant presence in Ger-
many. The German market, a netexporter of services, is traditionally
known for providing engineeringservices as opposed to utilizing t hem.
Germans are also known for their ap-
preciation for dedication, commit-ment and excellent execution.
Through a tremendous amount of am-bitious marketing and salesmanship,
coupled with the companys exten-sive portfolio of success, they estab-
lished a foothold in both computeraided engineering design and IT serv-
ices.
The Road AheadToday, a decade since its humble be-ginning, the company has been see-
ing constant growth. With about ahandful of customer acquisition per
year, it ensures that the quality is not
compromised to quantity.
As the world gears up towardstaking the enterprise solutions, social
media applications, and end user so-lutions to the mobile world heavily
supported by major players and plat-
forms, the company is making sure itis in the right place to leverage on this
opportunity.
Vernalis Systems is today wellpositioned to play a very significant
role in providing mobile applica-tions, business intelligence, applica-
tion support, and engineering design
combined with media backed solu-tions for our global customers. The
company is also playing a predomi-nant role in building solutions that
pave way to green and environmen-tally conscious corporate and end
user world. To provide additional
bandwidth for the increased clien-tele and to further provide more
services to the clients, the companyis currently working on setting up
offices in the Middle East and in theAsia Pacific regions.
Additionally, having garneredvaried business expertise, the com-
pany has launched a venture capital
fund to encourage budding entrepre-
neurs. Vernalis Systems already hasa stake in multiple companies in theareas of logistics, infrastructure de-
velopment, and talent management. These entities together employ over

Here we are! With the much awaited annual si100 issue.
This is the 13th year we are hailing and saluting the continuing rise and glory of the Indian
entrepreneurs in high-tech industry in U.S.
In the past 13 years we have seen the industry evolving, growing and recouping the hunches of
recessions that marred the landscape. But nothing has stopped the Indian entrepreneur from
making it big. From the era of the mainframes to computers to the era of smart phones and
tablets, they left their mark everywhere. From the times of client servers to web based to the
cloud, foot prints are obvious and history is incomplete without them.
This year also we have carefully listed those companies which display the characteristics of
long-term visibility, sustained growth, business focus, profitability and customer and employee
value-creation. If one is giving a new dimension to online advertising, another is optimizing the
WAN through the cloud and the other has a great market share in the Value added Services
market. While some have chosen Internet to innovate and experiment, others by their sheer
customer focus and engagement models pleased the billion dollar companies.
We salute each and every one of these entrepreneurs for their leadership, and particularly for
their unrelenting dedication in building their companies. Each and every entrepreneur on this list
demonstrate the utmost passion for building lasting enterprises and exudes confidence that
they will succeed in tackling the current economic conditions.
A distinguished panel comprising of accomplished Indian CEOs & CIOs of public companies,
VCs, analysts, founders of other VC funded companies including siliconindia editorial board
decided on the top 100 companies. We congratulate the 100 finalists for achieving this vote of
respect from industry leaders and wish each and every one of them a great future.

Commodity markets are treach-erous because of their com-
plexity and high degree of riskand uncertainty. To manage this com-
plexity and risk, firms that buy, sell
and trade commodities must be ableto view and manage their physical
commodity positionsand their total fi-
nancial exposureon a real-time
basis. The right
technology canprovide substantial
differentiation
and competitive advantage to thefirms that deploy them.
What is required is a robust, spe-cialist commodity trading and risk
management system to handle all
this. It is not enough to have riskmanagement solely covering trading.
Operational, regulatory, and counterparty risks must all be managed on a
common platform, says ManavGarg, CEO and Founder of Eka Soft-

In the wake of rising security threat, the immigration processes have only
become more complex and due tolack of information, updates on new
policies and other immigration details,
most enterprises find challenges in com- pliance to immigration rules as the
process is tedious and end upspending nearly half a billion
dollars on the same. The recentannouncement by the U.S. gov-
ernment to audit 25,000 com-
panies for compliance showsthe criticality of the situation
and this is the business opportu-
nity that INSZoom banks on.Founded in 1999 by Umesh
Vaidyamath, with of-
fices in the UnitedStates, India and UK,
INSZoom is the
worlds largest immigration softwarecompany, and develops immigration
management solutions for enterprises, domestic and global immigration
lawyers based in the U.S., Canada, Aus-
tralia and the U.K., universities, health-care organizations and non-profit
groups.INSZoom offers a full suite of robust
web based solutions that help enterprisesand law firms across the world with
Case Management, Compliance Tools,
Case Tracking, Immigration FormsGenerator, Management Reports, and an
Address Book. Built on a DotNET plat-
form, the solution is adroitly wrappedaround the Adobe PDF for the docu-mentation management stream flow and
can be customized according to theclient needs. Today, the company has top
IT firms like Microsoft, IBM, Wipro,
Cognizant, and Patni among its enter- prise clients and has successfully li-
censed out the software to over 1000attorneys in the U.S. alone.
When it comes to immigration, to
have the right information at the righttime is very important. With the rules
and regulations changing almost everyday, it is a tedious task to keep a tab on
the updates. To address this problem,INSZoom has developed a portal,
www.migrantplanet.com with that gives
realtime updates on immigration laws ofcountries around the world. Ask Vaidya-
math about his future plans and he says,
I want INSZoom to be the one stopshop for all immigration solutions. A fewyears down the line, I hope to help cre-
ate a system where immigrating be-comes as simple as traveling within
ones own country. si

The financial recession had a
devastating effect on majorityof the firms in the IT industry.
While most of the large corporationshardly grew by 10 percent, the mid tier
companies were on a decline. But In-finite Computer Solutions was an
anomaly in this pattern with the com-
pany registering a growth of 35-40percent. The company has witnessed
growth, from $85 million revenue in2008 to $140.9 million in 2010, out of
which 90 percent of the revenue sharewas from top 10 customers which are
Fortune 100 companies. According to
Upinder Zutshi, MD and CEO of Infi-nite, the reason for this is A healthy
mix of Fortune 100 and mid level or-ganizations as customers coupled with
IP based solutions in niche servicesareas across select focus verticals.
Zutshi believes this is the factor that
sets the company apart from other
players in the industry.
Ranked this year as the 5th BestEmployer in DQ-IDC Survey, Infi-

enabling closer business alignment be-tween customers business and its

The software testing market is
growing fast, not only in size butalso complexity. The big need in
the market has shifted from test func-tionality to complexities of production
environment. Enterprises are using vir-tualization and private clouds exten-
sively to consolidate their datacenters. In
order to deploy production applicationscompanies need deep understanding of
architecture, infrastructure technologiesand testing. Instead of Performance test-
ing, CIOs now need to address Per-formance Engineering. Anuradha
Biswas had a pristine understanding of
this when she started Prakat Solutions.Founded in 2009, the Texas based
companys specialty is in Cloud Com-puting, Virtualization, Independent Test-
ing, Test Consulting and Open Source.The company has three core offerings;
Software Testing, Consulting and Train-
ing. The testing services include Enter-prise Testing, Performance Testing, Data
Warehouse Testing, Application Secu-rity Testing and Test Automation. It pro-
vides an end to end testing service to thecustomers. We realize the pains our
customers face with some of the larger
companies where they are not willing tobe flexible to meet some of the critical
requirements or concerns. We havealso seen the increasing requests
from customers for taking up anend-to-end testing project where
