Shot- 15

Camera shot: Mid Close up

Sound: The same background music is being played

Content: Misty looking surroundings suggests the unknown and that the film is not at a clear start like we don’t really know what the story is about.

Shot- 16

Camera shot: Mid Shot

Sound: The same background music is being played

Content: The fact that we see her arms moving fast show the audience that she is running faster and getting either further into the woods or further towards the exit.

Mise en scene – First setting we see is in a secluded woodland area, the setting that we see does connote horror because it looks a little scary. The characters costume looks like workout clothes if it’s cold and we also may think this because of her sweat patches and the fact that she is running, it does not really connote the genre of the film. Lighting is very low key and the look of it all suggests that this part is set in the early hours of the morning.

Sound – The sounds used are not that interesting due to the fact that it’s the same background music and nothing else is added throughout the first two minutes. The background music used has an eerie feel to it and its very mysterious, this may be to help the audience gain some ideas on what the film will be like.

Page 5: Silence of the lambs

Editing – The editing is varied, there is a tracking shot used up until shot 12 then a jump cut to the back of the character and whilst she is running the tracking is shown this is to create tension and make the audience feel uneasy, which links to the genre of the film. The editing is fast paced to match the characters fast paced actions (jogging in a secluded area) could also relate to the characters heartbeat.

Camera Shots – The camera shots are varied throughout the first two minutes. Allot of wide shots are used and long shots, this may be to represent the horror in the setting. Also the shots used give the audience a clear view of who this character is and what she is wearing etc.

Representation: Not much is shown throughout the first two minutes that can be seen as a representation of something.

Genre: The genre is horror/thriller. I believe that this is clearly shown due to the scary looking setting and the thrilling background music that is used. The character does not really connote horror, in my opinion, because she is in normal clothes that someone would wear on a morning workout, although the fact that she is in the middle of this scary forest may suggest something will happen to her or may suggest that something in this film will happen in a secluded area.

Stereotypes/ Ideology: A stereotype may be that the woman is on her own in a secluded, scary looking area and this happens quiet allot in most horror/thriller films with women, typically at the start of one, so seeing this could be uneasy for the audience as they wonder if anything is going to happen to her.

Theories and theorists: Theorist Stephen Prince states that “like other genre movies, any given horror film will convey synchronic association, ideological, and social messages that are a part of a certain period or historical moment. One can analyse films in terms of these periods or moments, much like they can do with gangster movies. But unlike this genre, horror also goes deeper, to explore more fundamental questions about the nature of human existence, and other questions that, in some profound ways, go beyond culture and society as these are organized in any given form or period.” From this, we understand that Prince feels that the horror genre is an elite genre within the field of film, as it is the most realistic, and some of concepts and ideas placed into films in the genre are relative to ‘real life’.
