THETHE

Held at the start of the year, Signature plays an instrumental role in boosting demand, determining the way forward for the industry and serving as an ideal setting for building new relationships, cementing old ones, and understanding the market and its ways. Over 80% of existing exhibitors have retained their space this year while 110 new companies have been added, illustrating the growing popularity of the show.

“Signature IIJS has matured into a show that is of immense value to India’s jewellery manufacturers and retailers. The show has grown exponentially over the years with the addition of more exhibitors as well as with the increased number of visitors,” said Saunak Parikh, convener – exhibition subcommittee (national), Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). This edition also features some new additions. “For the first time, Signature IIJS will be held in conjunction with IGJME. Moreover, this event will also feature an extended gold section, catering to the increasing demand for gold jewellery,” added Parikh.

The 3rd edition of the India Gem & Jewellery Machinery Expo (IGJME) has the distinction of being Asia’s largest gem and jewellery technology fair. The expo features the latest technology and includes the participation of 149 leading suppliers of machinery from India and countries like Germany, Italy, USA and China, etc. occupying 182 booths. Exhibitors will showcase cutting-edge jewellery

manufacturing technology, including laser machines, computerised yield planning machines, advanced bruiting lathes and diamond-impregnated scaives.

The joint staging of Signature IIJS and the IGJME will thus open new doors to retailers, manufacturers and visitors in terms of exposure to the latest innovations and technical advancements. This will also help industry players retain a competitive edge by keeping up with the latest developments in the manufacturing world.

The past year had proved extremely challenging to the industry especially for the diamond industry. The undisclosed mixing of synthetics and the downturn in the economies of China and Europe also added to the disheartening state of affairs.

Hence, Signature will be an extremely important factor in gauging consumer sentiments and discerning the general tone of the market for 2016.

“The Indian markets have demonstrated their resilience despite negative global influences. The sheer volume of consumption of the Indian economy holds a lot of promise for the industry. In fact, the biggest business opportunity is the Indian consumer market itself,” said Praveenshankar Pandya, chairman, GJEPC.

“It is my belief that a show like Signature IIJS will help you tackle the challenges by providing you the resources, insights and contacts to be successful in 2016,” added Pandya.

I am extremely delighted to learn that the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is

organising the ninth edition of India International Jewellery Show, Signature concurrently with the third edition of the Indian Gem and Jewellery Machinery Expo (IGJME) from February 5th to 8th, 2016 in Mumbai. Signature is the most prestigious show in the country and has earned a reputation for being the top sourcing event for India’s leading jewellery retailers, after IIJS.

Signature today has become an important event on the Indian gem and jewellery calendar. It has gained prestige and stature as the show which jewellers like to attend to keep abreast of the latest in the jewellery market – the new styles, and collections, the price points, what’s trending and in demand. Being compact in size, the show offers jewellers the opportunity to have in-depth discussions with India’s best

manufacturers and meet new suppliers. IGJME, the gem and jewellery technology fair, will offer the manufacturers

the best in technology that will bring a difference to their business in terms of quantity and quality.

The role played by the GJEPC in promoting the exports of gems and jewellery is praiseworthy. I hope that Signature IIJS and IGJME 2016 will go a long way in supplementing and boosting the export promotion efforts undertaken by the Council.

I wish all the participants a productive and pleasurable experience at the shows.

The gem and jewellery industry has been at the forefront when

it comes to fulfilling the “Make in India” vision of our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contributing 13% to India’s total merchandise exports during financial year 2014-15. Over the last four decades, India has emerged as the leader in diamond and jewellery manufacturing and exports, that too without any production of rough diamonds indigenously.

However, the current scenario is a challenging one. The downturn in China and Europe has impacted the

PRAVEENSHANKAR PANDYAChairman,The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council

demand and pricing of polished diamonds and finished jewellery. Moreover, the sluggish global markets and strong rough diamond prices have adversely affected the profitability of the industry.

Nevertheless, there is still widespread optimism that tough times may be over for the industry. The Indian markets have demonstrated their resilience despite negative global influences. The sheer volume of consumption of the Indian economy holds a lot of promise for the industry. In fact, the biggest business opportunity is the Indian consumer market itself.

The various events being organised by the GJEPC such as the mega IIJS, Signature IIJS, IIJW, IGJME and The Artisan Awards are leading platforms for the industry to grow and collectively raise the bar in terms of quality, design and business practices. It is my belief that a show like Signature IIJS will help you tackle the challenges by providing you the resources, insights and contacts to be successful in business.

I welcome you and wish you a successful show.

It is my privilege to welcome you to the ninth edition of Signature IIJS. Signature has been

growing in stature with each passing year and is known for its high-end innovative jewellery designs as well as for its comprehensive array of coloured gemstones and diamonds. The niche show, which marks the beginning of the gem and jewellery industry’s business calendar, has become a must-attend event.

This year, the Indian Gem and Jewellery Machinery Expo (IGJME) is also being held concurrently with Signature, making it a one-stop jewellery and technology source for manufacturers as well as for retailers. While 2015 has been a tough year for the industry, there have been positive indications in the latter half of the year and I hope that it strengthens in 2016.

RUSSELL MEHTAVice Chairman,The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council

The introduction of the Special Notified Zone for diamonds has been a landmark event for our industry and I am sure that the trade will continue to reap benefits from the collaborated efforts of the government as well as GJEPC. Our focus will remain on fortifying the gem and jewellery industry and expanding our CSR activities for the greater benefit of society. I wish all the participants a very successful Signature IIJS and IGJME.

In its ninth edition, Signature IIJS has matured into a show that is of immense value to India’s

jewellery manufacturers and retailers. The show has grown exponentially over the years with the addition of more exhibitors as well as with the increased number of visitors.

The growing popularity and footfalls have encouraged us to continuously upgrade the infrastructure and facilities to deliver an unmatched experience year on year. For the first time, the latest edition of Signature IIJS will be held in conjunction with IGJME which presents an opportunity to upgrade the industry’s manufacturing requirement in terms of quality and quantity. Moreover, this event will also feature an extended gold section, catering to the increasing demand for gold jewellery.

As the show continues to expand, we’ve

SAUNAK PARIKHConvener, Exhibition Subcommittee (National),The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council

gone to great lengths to ensure the exclusivity of the products, participants and the ambience without any compromise, providing you a comfortable, unhurried pace with plenty of time to meet new and existing suppliers, who will offer you a visual treat with their exciting new collections and trends. Happy sourcing!

I take this opportunity to welcome you to Signature IIJS 2016. Signature is a premium

jewellery show that sets the benchmark for jewellery design, quality and finish. It is also the perfect platform for manufacturers to showcase India’s legacy of rich jewellery crafts.

Taking the show’s growing popularity into consideration, this year we expect visitors from 375 cities in India and around 500 overseas visitors from more than 55 countries. Over 80% of the exhibitors are repeat participants, which further illustrates the popularity and success of the show.

It is the Council’s endeavour to constantly enrich the exhibitors’ as well as the visitors’ experience at the show as well as ensure ease

of business and maximum returns as participants. The Elite Club, comprising large and medium retailers from India, has undergone a comprehensive overhaul and now consists of close to 1,676 prime companies from 198 cities.

I hope that Signature 2016 will be the turnaround that the industry desires.

Exhibitor Voices

KAPIL BAPNA, proprietor of Arham Jewellers, believes Signature IIJS is the perfect platform to supplement the upcoming wedding season demand.

My firm specialises in Calcutta jewellery wrought in 22-karat gold. We manufacture plain as well as studded jewellery in emeralds and rubies in a mix of lightweight and heavy items. However, I expect heavy items to move faster as the wedding season is around the corner and this will uplift the consumer sentiment at the show. The market for gold is also looking good right now and the mood is good for Signature.

We cater to customers all over India but we are planning to focus specially on Maharashtra as we see great scope here. I hope the show to be good.

VEERESH MOR, partner at Diti Jewels, hopes to gain prominence in the Mumbai and Pune markets through Signature IIJS.

We deal primarily in uncut diamond jewellery set in 22-karat gold and we also manufacture coloured stone-studded jewellery featuring rubies and emeralds. We are introducing a new collection of antique-finish jewellery with naqashi work.

We have pinned a lot of expectations on Signature as this is held at the beginning of the year and we can garner the sentiment for the rest of the year through participation.

Most of our customers are from the southern parts of India. We are planning to target the Mumbai and Pune markets now. Signature IIJS will definitely facilitate our expansion plans.

Online Business Matching Programme: The Online Business Matching Programme enables registered visitors to find and interact with exhibitors that match their business profile. It allows visitors to post their business-related enquiries, view the latest collections, send enquiries and schedule appointments. Managed by experienced representatives, the kiosks are located throughout the halls.

IDEX Diamond Kiosk: The IDEX Diamond Kiosk lets visitors check the stocks and pricing of all the loose diamond exhibitors at the fair.

Elite Club Lounge: The Elite Club Lounge, located at Hall 1 centre square, offers food and beverage services to privileged members, who can enjoy a quiet moment, network with industry colleagues and enjoy light refreshments.

Coffee Shops & Cafeteria: Grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich at any of the outlets located throughout the halls catered by Costa Coffee and Barista Lavazza. Additionally, the cafeterias located near Hall 3 and Hall 6 provide a delicious spread of vegetarian food, including meals for members of the Jain community.

Shuttle Bus Services: Bus shuttles will be provided to exhibitors from the official hotels – Grand Hyatt, The Lalit and JW Marriott – to the venue at specific timings from Gate No. 2. A shuttle service will also be provided between Goregaon station and the exhibition centre.

Business Centre: A full-fledged Business and Communication Centre is set up in Hall 1 for your convenience. Facilities like internet access, meeting & conference rooms, photocopying and fax are available on a chargeable basis.

Smoking Lounge: Smoking is strictly prohibited in the entire exhibition area. A smoking lounge facility has been provided for exhibitors and visitors.

PRANAY NIGOTIYA, marketing head of Desert Jewellers, looks to Signature IIJS with guarded expectations.

We specialise in natural coloured gemstone- and diamond-studded jewellery made in 18-karat gold and cater primarily to the domestic market. The most popular gemstones these days are emeralds, rubies, sapphires and tanzanites.

We are presenting a new collection of cufflinks made in 18-karat gold embellished with diamonds, coloured stones and enamelling. We are also bringing a collection of earrings festooned with carved stones, and an assortment of lightweight rings made using diamonds and jaali work.

Lightweight jewellery is moving very well right now. The jewellery business has been going through a rough patch for the past year and hence our expectations from the Signature show are not too high. However, this is a focussed show with a select number of participants, and customers come with a definite idea of what they want. But we are guarded. The market situation, especially for diamonds, is quite bad. With the influx of synthetics and its undisclosed mixing, consumer confidence has considerably eroded. We need to be transparent to get past this hurdle, and maintain credibility.

AVINASH GUPTA, partner, Mamraj Mussadilal, hopes to woo customers with an enchanting collection of fusion jewellery that marries the design styles of the North with that of the South.

We trade in pacchi, junagadh, antique, kundan, precious stone and traditional South Indian jewellery consisting of imaginative designs and craftsmanship of the highest quality. We have a wide range of bangles, earrings, necklace sets, pendant sets, rings, maang tikkas, choti ornaments, etc.

This time, we are showcasing a fusion of temple and polki jewellery called Nakshi Pacchi jewellery. We have a wide range of both lightweight and heavy bridal jewellery. The pieces are studded with diamonds and precious stones like rubies and emeralds. We have always had more demand for heavier items than for lightweight items.

I expect the show to be very good. The global rates of gold have fallen and this has expanded the buyer’s purchasing power. This makes gold a very popular investment avenue. So overall, this is a great plus to the Indian jewellery sector.

We have a good foothold in the northern part of India. We are trying to capture the southern part using our fusion jewellery that caters to the southerners’ love for temple jewellery.

I am very sure that the show and the year ahead is going to be a very successful and fruitful one.

DEVENDRA DAGLIYA, proprietor of Dheeman Diamonds, sees great scope in Signature in the post Diwali market boom.

We manufacture diamond mountings for jewellery manufacturers and are the only firm in Asia to create invisible mountings for diamond jewellery.

I expect this year’s edition of Signature to be a great success. After Diwali, the market has been booming and rising by around 15-20%. The GJEPC is also very supportive and its vision is taking the industry forward. Diamond jewellery manufacturers in India are our primary customer base. However, we are looking to expand into the UAE and Gulf regions as well. We are sure that Signature will aid our plans of expansion.

REVI VATS and AMIT NAGPAL, partners at Dhruv Gold, expect to do great business at Signature IIJS this year.

We specialise in gold jewellery studded with cubic zirconia. Our expectations are quite good as our participation in the show has always been satisfactory. The show is very important to our company as we have grown multiple times after participation in Signature. It is a great place to expand one’s customer base and we always receive the highest volume of orders after participation.

As gold prices have fallen, we expect heavy items to move faster. However, demand for lightweight is always strong. As far as the government policies are concerned, we would like to have import prices lowered. Labour reforms are also required to boost the export segment. Exports have been very tough for the past one to two years. We hope this trend changes in 2016. We cater primarily to the domestic market. However, we are keen on supporting customers all over the world and look forward to doing so at this show.

What are the jewellery categories that you are presenting at Signature this time? This time, I am focusing on kadas and semi-necklace sets consisting of chokers and complementary earrings. The necklace sets weigh between 100 and 150 grams and the cuffs range between 50 and 80 grams.

You are greatly inspired by nature. How differently have you presented it in the new collections in terms of textures and gemstones?Yes, nature is my eternal muse. This time, I have amply used cut rubies and blue sapphires in my collections, apart from continuing my previous series of pave-set Swarovski gems, and used elements of glass with gold in some sets.

What are customers looking for these days? They prefer statement pieces these days as customers are very picky about what pieces they buy. Jewellery today plays a major role in enhancing one’s personality.

One of India’s ace designers ANAND SHAH presents the bold face of nature in his creations mounted in 22-karat gold with antique finish at Signature this time. Wide textured twigs intertwined with engraved stems, floral buds articulated with pave-set fuchsia gems and green gem-set leaves get larger-than-life treatment in the collection consisting of chokers that are symmetrical or organic in form and statement foliar cuffs.

VIRAL KOTHARI of Kosha Fine Jewels tells us more about his nature and modern art-inspired collections.

Last year was your first Signature. How was the response?Much to our expectation, the response was overwhelming! We had a turnout ratio of almost 80%. We received an extremely positive feedback on our designs and it helped Kosha Fine Jewels expand into previously untapped market segments.

What will you be showcasing at Signature 2016?We will be showcasing our new range of designs which are finely crafted to suit the latest trends.
