NATIONAL FOLK THEATRESiamsa Tíre tours regularly throughout Ireland and abroad as well as being activelyinvolved in the creation of new work, including a recent collaboration with the PrintzDance Project in San Francisco, and a current project with the Kildare basedPerformance Corporation. Siamsa Tíre’s most recent production, Moriarty waspremiered in Tralee in 2009.

SIAMSA TÍREA series of sketches created by Fr Pat Ahern and performed by Siamsóirí na Ríochta in 1969evoked such a positive public response that he was encouraged to put an entire showtogether. This was the birth of Siamsa Tíre. With the formation of Siamsa Tíre Teoranta in1974, Fr Ahern was appointed Artistic Director, a position he held until his retirement in1998. During this time Fr Ahern, along with the legendary Martin Whelan (General Managerof Siamsa Tíre from 1974 to 2002), oversaw the growth and development of Siamsa Tíre andits eventual move to its current purpose-built facility in 1991.

An essential element of Siamsa Tíre’s activities is the passing on of the tradition to the nextgeneration, ensuring its vibrancy and continuity for the future. Siamsa Tíre operates twoTraining Centres, one in Carraig in West Kerry, the other in Finuge in North Kerry. Childrenfrom the age of 7 to 12 are trained in the unique Siamsa tradition of music, dance, dramaand song.

“There is a sense in which we do not own our culture, we are only trustees. The treasure isonly on loan and we must take it, refurbish it in the light of our experience, and hand it on.”

- Fr. Pat Ahern FOUNDER AND FIRST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF SIAMSA TÍRE

OILEÁNCelebrating the Blasket Islands

This production by Siamsa Tire celebrates and explores Blasket Island livingwhile also challenging our own notions of identity as contemporary islanders.Premiered in 2003, Oilean marked the 50th anniversary of the departure of theBlasket Islanders to the mainland. The Great Blasket Island, located off thecoast of West Kerry still remains an almost mystical significance for many, bothfrom Ireland and abroad.

The way of the life of the islanders and their spirit of survival is framed in thisproduction, which captures the essence of this island community, theirtraditions and customs, their wealth of song and story, their love of life andtheir strong kingship with one another.
