EASTEREaster celebrations at the National Shrine of the Little
Flower were glorious. Those who do the decorations, themusic, the serving, the cleaning, and all the work behind thescenes really outdid themselves. Thanks and congratulationsto all.
Our continued prayerful support and encouragement toall who were baptized, received into the Church, andconfirmed at Easter. Your witness to your faith in the RisenLord Jesus is powerful. Our community is stronger with andthrough your presence with us.
EASTER ContinuesThis weekend we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter,
the last day of the Easter Octave. For the Universal Church itis now called Mercy Sunday. That day on which we rejoice inthe power of God’s Loving Mercy made known through OurLord Jesus Christ.
The celebration of the Easter Season continues for 50 daysuntil the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost.
Mercy SundayThe following is from the Apostolic DECREE on
Indulgences attached to devotions in honor of Divine Mercy.“And so the Supreme Pontiff, John Paul II, motivated by
an ardent desire to foster in Christians this devotion to DivineMercy as much as possible in the hope of offering greatspiritual fruit to the faithful, in the Audience granted on 13June 2002, to those Responsible for the Apostolic Penitentiary, granted the following Indulgences:
“Three conditions for the plenary indulgence“a plenary indulgence, granted under the usual conditions
(sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayerfor the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, onthe Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in anychurch or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached fromthe affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayersand devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in thepresence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved inthe tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, addinga devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus,I trust in you!”); “
The Sacramental Confession may be received within areasonable amount of time before or after Mercy Sunday.Confession made immediately prior to or during Holy Week
would most certainly fulfill the conditions of receiving theindulgence. One does not have to receive the Sacrament ofReconciliation on Mercy Sunday to receive the indulgence.Nor is there a necessity of celebrating a so called “Special Mass”other than the regular Mass of the Second Sunday of Easter.
What is most important is that we demonstrate in ouractions mercy toward one another.
Faith DirectThere are about 250 families and individuals who have
signed up to make their regular Sunday Offering through FaithDirect. I hope those using it find it as easy and hassle free as Ido. It is very convenient.
Once you sign up, you may find that you still receive yourmonthly mailing of envelopes for the next month. Thishappens because of the overlap between when one systemtakes over and the other system is curtailed. If it keeps up formore than one month, please notify the office.

Life MattersTell [all people], My daughter, that I am Love
and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Mewith trust, I fill it with such an abundance ofgraces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other souls. (Diary of St.Faustina, 1074)
On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we celebratethe outpouring of God’s mercy for all us. Weespecially pray that those who have experiencedan abortion can be reconciled and healed byGod’s abundant mercy.
“I would like to say a special word to womenwho have had an abortion. The Church is awareof the many factors which may have influencedyour decision, and she does not doubt that inmany cases it was a painful and even shatteringdecision. The wound in your heart may not yethave healed. Certainly what happened was andremains terribly wrong. But do not give in todiscouragement and do not lose hope. Try ratherto understand what happened and face ithonestly.” (Evangelium Vitae – Gospel of Life, #99)
Project Rachel is a confidential healingministry for the many people, both men andwomen, who have been touched by an abortionexperience. Jesus said, “blest are they who have not seenand believed.” As a community of believers, wehave made this act of faith, and just as the earlyChristian community trusted the disciples topreach, teach, and lead them in the Christian life,we also look to the Church for guidance. Priests,

Growing in Faith as a Family . . . Elementary...
Second Sunday of Easter: “Receivethe Holy Spirit”Acts 2:42-47, 1Peter 1:3-9, & John 20:19-31
We have a saying, “Seeing is believing.” Ashumans we often require proof of something beforewe are willing to accept whether or not it is true. Weeven have a name for a person who cannot accepttruths unless the facts are laid out right before theireyes—we call them a “Doubting Thomas.” This week’sreadings reflect on our own human weaknesses—ourinability to accept on faith something that we cannot
see and the gift God gives us, empowering us so we may believe withoutseeing, love without conditions, and live boldly in the faith.
The readings from the Acts of the Apostles and the first letter of Peterboth focus on living the faith. The inspired authors note there is a markeddifference in the behavior of the believers. The faithful are set apart by theirgenerosity of spirit, perseverance, hopefulness, praising of God, and devotionto the faith. The believers are marked with an enthusiasm for God, exhibitjoy in living, and thankfulness for the rich blessings they have received andopenly express these feelings. It is interesting to note that while this joy isbeing boldly proclaimed, the people themselves lived in fear of persecutionand death. How did the people have the strength to proclaim God’s Word ina time when the message was so dangerous? How could they find joy insuffering? The believers rejoiced because believed that through Christ, theywould be saved. Jesus triumphed over death! The Good News of salvationassured eternal life for all those who believed.
The disciples were simple people selected by Jesus to carry out the taskof spreading the faith after His resurrection and Ascension. These fishermenand tax collectors were not the movers and shakers of society or greatintellectuals, but simple men. The women who followed Jesus had noinfluence—many were deemed outcasts. Most of Jesus’ followers were tooscared of losing their own life to remain with Him throughout His Passionand death, yet somehow, these same disciples were now boldly proclaimingthe teachings of Jesus with a fervor that is fearless. What happened? Howwere these simple men and women transformed into a people on fire withthe love of Jesus, boldly proclaiming Christ’s promise of salvation, and livingas examples of the Father’s love?
The answer lies in John’s Gospel. Jesus appeared to His disciples. Hegreeted them, saying, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” With that,Jesus breathes on His disciples, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” What is thepower of the Spirit? Thomas, who has forever become known as “DoubtingThomas,” is not present when Jesus empowers the disciples with the Spirit, but returns after the fact and cannot believe what the others are telling him.Thomas stands in sharp contrast to the others, who have had their eyesopened through their encounter with the risen Christ and reception of theSpirit. This transformation gives the disciples with an understanding and afire for the faith that they cannot contain. While we cannot place our handsin the wounds of Christ, nor touch His side, we are called to believe, “sightunseen.” “Blessed are those who believe without seeing,” Jesus tells us. Weare given the Gift of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, the same Spirit breathed onthe disciples. Do our actions in faith mirror those early believers? Do we livewith the same courageous love for Christ? Do we proclaim our faith joyfullyand boldly? We will if we recognize the presence of Jesus active in our livesand fan the flame of faith so it burns bright enough for all to see. Let uscelebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and God’s great love for us as we openourselves to His guidance! J.A. Maten
A Teaching Moment…Divine Mercy Sunday
The Sunday following
Easter is celebrated as
Divine Mercy Sunday. The
message and devotion at
the heart of the Divine
Mercy is based on a vision
by St. Faustina. Born in
1905 in Lodz, Poland,
Helen Kowalska entered
the Congregation of the
Sisters of Our Lady of
Mercy. Taking the name Sr.
Maria Faustina of the
Blessed Sacrament, Sr. Faustina was a mystic who
experienced a vision of the Lord. The vision
featured two rays flowing from Jesus, one red and
the other pale in color. In her diary, Sr. Faustina
wrote that Jesus commanded her to have a
painting created of her vision created, with the
words, “Jesus, I trust in You.” The revelation is a
reminder to all that the Father’s mercy is infinite
and unfailing to all who trust in Him. Sr. Faustina
died in 1938 and was canonized by Pope John
Paul II in 2000, making her the first saint of the
new millennium.

Cross Connection ReflectionsSeveral students and parents met at Fraser Villa Mercy Center on Saturday April8 for an Ice Cream Social with the residents. The residents have issues rangingfrom physical limitations, to severe mental limitations due to aging, Alzheimer’sand Dementia. The students were given some background info and then wentto work. One group dished out the ice cream; another group served the icecream and a third group went to tables where there were only one or tworesidents. All of the students eventually sat at tables with the residents andsocialized with them for over an hour. I heard lots of conversation (what it is likefor a student today, what it was like generations ago; stories about the war;conversations about shared interests such as music, sports, favorite foods);laughter (about the price of gas then and now and the differences in clothing);and one of our students even played the piano. The residents were absolutelythrilled with our young people. I saw so many smiles on the faces of the residents, many of whom have no family or visitors. At the end of the visit, the residentsthanked the students and asked them to come back. I was so proud of theseyoung people who really looked for Jesus in the faces of these elderly peopleand treated them with kindness and compassion. I know the residents saw theface of Jesus in our students too. The staff at Fraser Villa was so impressed withour students that they too asked us to come back for other activities. With all thenegative things we hear about today’s youth, these young people are exhibitingthe positive aspects of faith and charity. They are not afraid to give of themselveseven in an unfamiliar setting with unfamiliar people. Our Church should be veryproud of our young people. Linda Rathburn-Catechist
