INTRODUCTION:
It is proposed to construct nine, eight storey residential buildings
“Renaissance Royal” at the site. To assess the subsoil strata from safe
bearing capacity point of view, soil investigation work was entrusted to
Shree Samarth by Shree Sharda Infrastructure by work order.
SITE LOCATION:
The project area is located at Neral.Survey No.30/3
b,58/1B,60/2A2,,60/2 B, 60/2 K,60/2A3& Survey no.30/3 k, 59/1, 60/1,
61/2, , 59/1a,60/2A1
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION:
It is proposed to construct nine, eight storey residential buildings. It
is anticipated that the structure shall be constructed from reinforced
concrete and the area around will be suitably land scapped.
SCOPE OF SERVICES:
The limited scope of services as defined in work order consists of
Drilling and sampling in nine boreholes (one borehole for each
building)
Carrying out relevant laboratory tests on representative soil
and rock samples.
Preparation of engineering report based on field and
laboratory data.
FIELD WORK:
Drilling and sampling in soil and rock was carried out using rotary
drilling rig. Borehole in soil was advanced using rotary drilling method,
while NX size core barrel with diamond bit was used to drill in rock.
Water was circulated to cool the drilling bit. Ground water table was
recorded after 24 hours of completion of drilling. On completion of
drilling, soil samples were packed in plastic containers with proper
identification tags. Rock cores were numbered and kept in core boxes.
Representative of client indicated location of bore holes.
Fieldwork was performed during February 2016.
Ground elevation as provided by client is tabulated below
Borehole no Elevation of ground

SUB SOIL PROFILE
Sub-soil conditions described below are based on drilling and sampling in
nine boreholes. Generalized sub-soil profile for the area investigated can
be divided in various layers. It is possible that the layers encountered in
the borehole may not be in the same order as listed below. Following
table lists thickness of various layers, variation range of RQD as the case
may be.
Layer I: Brownish sandy gravel/ silty clay
Layer II: Completely weathered rock recovered as sandy grave
Layer III: Highly to slightly weathered basalt
Bore hole no
Layer I Layer II Layer IIIThick Thick Thick RQD
BH1 1.0 - 7.0 0-98
BH2 3.0 - 4.0 0-40
BH3 1.0 - 7.0 25-90

BH5 - 0.5 8.0 80-98

BH7 - 1.0 3.0 93-99
BH8 - 1.5 6.5 40-82

GROUND WATER LEVEL:
Water level was not encountered in any of the boreholes. Correct method
to determine ground water table is to install standpipe piezometer and
monitor over long period of time. Depth measured below the ground
surface existing at the time of investigation.
LABORATORY TESTING:
On completion of drilling samples were sent to the laboratory for
further testing. Samples were classified in the laboratory and
representative samples were selected for testing. Following tests were
performed.
Unconfined compression strength
Dry and soaked density
Porosity and absorption.
ENGINEERING ANALYSIS:
Engineering analysis of the substratum was performed to determine
net safe bearing capacity. Parameters obtained are based on various
field and laboratory tests.
Column loads are expected to be moderate to high. RQD and core
strength is considered up to bottom of borehole.
Safe baring capacity for foundations placed on rock is determined as
per procedure given in IS12070 “Code of practice for Design and
Construction of Shallow Foundations on Rock. The procedure is based on
RMR (Rock Mass Rating) concept. RMR is calculated as per the method
given in IS 13365 (Part 1) “Quantitative Classification System of Rock
Mass”. Determination of RMR takes into consideration following properties
of rock stratum
Strength of Intact rock material
Rock Quality Designation
Spacing of Discontinuities
Condition of Discontinuities
Ground water condition
Orientation of Discontinuities
Joint Orientation
It is mentioned in IS 12070 that if net allowable bearing capacity is
determined based on RMR “settlement of raft foundation upto 6m
thickness to be less than 12mm”.
IS code referred does not specify any limitation from type and width of
foundations placed on rock. Also IS code does not specify any factor of
safety used.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusions and Recommendations are based on following accepted
norms.
Foundations should not fail in shear.
Anticipated settlement shall be less than allowable value.
Net safe bearing capacity to be adopted for pad foundations to be placed
at different depth below the ground surface existing at the time of
investigation is tabulated below.

Whenever foundations are placed on rock, it is essential to ensure that
there are no loose pockets on rock surface. In case of loose pockets or
over excavation, it shall be filled by plain cement concrete.
It is sound engineering practice to embed foundations for minimum
50cm in rock.
Shri Samarth Geotechnics takes this opportunity to thank staff of
Shree Sharda Infrastructure for their cooperation and support during
execution of this work.
Notes:
1. This report is issued based on the subsoil condition revealed at the
location of boreholes and laboratory tests performed on recovered
samples. If during construction of foundations it is observed that sub
soil conditions vary from those revealed during investigation it is
essential that Samarth Geotechnics shall be contacted so that on
confirmation supplementary report shall be issued.
