Around Our Schools Shout Outs April 2013 Volume 2c Shout Out to National Winners! ABSS AlamanceBurlington is the ONLY school district in the nation to be recognized for earning 2 First Place Magna Awards in the 2013 competition sponsored by the American School Board Journal, National School Boards Association and corporate partner, Sodexo! We earned the awards for our Little Leaders Program and our What’s After High School? Program. ABSS earned 2 of the 5 First Place awards in the category of school districts with enrollment over 20,000 students. We were also the smallest school district earning First Place awards in the category! Dr. Cox accepted the awards on behalf of our district at the Saturday, April 13 presentation at the National School Boards Association annual conference. Board members Steve Van Pelt, Jackie Cole, and Dr. Kristen Moffitt also attended the conference. Williams High                  Loma Shibata, Cindy Champion and Jon Upchurch  

2013 Visual Arts Festival Open House 

You are cordially invited to bring your family  to Williams High School  Thursday May 2, 2013 5:30pm until 7:30 pm WWHS Gymnasium 

 featuring work from art, photography, pottery, sculpture, and videography students, as well as guest artists 

Original work on canvas board made possible with the help of an ACE Visual Arts Grant.  

  Eastern High                                                         Aoife O’Neill, English Teacher and Debate Team Coach Board members Tony Rose and Patsy Simpson participated in a debate with the Eastern High Debate Team. They debated the statement "The United States military's use of attack drones internationally is in America's best interest." It was a riveting debate. We are very appreciative to Mr. Rose and Mrs. Simpson for so willingly taking the time to participate in the debate. We are also appreciative to those who judged the debate: Rae Johnson, Sherri Slade, and Matthew Synder. We are delighted that our debaters had this opportunity, as they learned so much from this challenge!   Students L to R: Caroline Cranford, Drew Latimer, Sara Drewery, Elyssa Morales, Abby Bates, Rylee Gouoreau, Jessie Miller

Southern Middle                              Stephanie Britt, Secretary  Art Students at SMS got a glimpse of the gruesome world of Hollywood makeup when Starr Jones (Hollywood Filmmaker & Make‐Up Artist) recently visited the Art class to show off masks, detailed prosthetics and even created a wound on Mrs. Sarah Cornette, our 

Art teacher!  He talked about having persistence in pursuing your dream career.

Graham High                           Stacey Frazier, School Counselor Out of 100+ applicants, 23 of those from GHS, the following Red Devils have been accepted into the Theta Class of Elon Academy: Josue Alonso Dionicio, Cecilia Aureoles, Sandra Candelario, Keely McDonald, and Kristina Torain. This is such a great honor and opportunity for these students!  

The Elon Academy is a college‐access and success program for high school students whose academic potential outdistances their circumstances. The year‐round program combines three intensive 4‐week residential experiences at Elon University in the summers prior to the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades with a variety of academic/enrichment activities during the school year. This year‐round program includes: Monthly Saturday Program for scholars from 8:45am‐1:00pm focused on enhancing academic skills and acquiring college access 

knowledge, bi‐weekly and monthly support from College Access Team (CAT) Mentors, family workshops 4x a year, family programs and events, academic coaching on an as‐needed basis, SAT/ACT Prep workshops, internships, involvement in community service through the Elon Academy Ambassadors Program, and opportunities for miscellaneous field trips related to the Saturday courses.

Southern Middle                            Stephanie Britt, Secretary  Shout Out to all students in the SMS Chorus, Advanced Chorus and Ensemble for an amazing performance at the Alamance Citizens for Education Stagestruck event this year!  Students showed their talents and skills under the direction of Mrs. Lynne Isley and Choreographer Aveena Thaxton, a senior from Southern High.
