Benjamin Yudin, Rabbi Andrew Markowitz, Associate Rabbi Shomrei Torah Shabbat Mikeitz—Shabbat Chanukah 2 Tevet, 5777/ December 30-31, 2016 PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: IN HONOR OF PARSHAT MIKEITZ, SHABBAT CHANUKAH AND ROSH CHODESH TEVET Based on the Gemara Moed Katan (16b), the Rabbis teach, Tzaddik gozer vHakadosh Boruch Hu mekayem, meaning Hashem listens to the directives of a Tzaddik. This idea is noted by the Yitav Panim and is substantiated by the choice of Nasi for today, the seventh day of Chanukah, being Elishama ben Amihud of Shevet Efraim. Menashe was born before Efraim as we know from this parsha. However, because Yaakov blessed Efraim before Menashe (48:20), Hashem in His Torah honored Yaakov by following suit and having the Nasi of Efraim before Menashe on the next day. Moreover, the fact that any tribe brought their offering on a Shabbat is a horaat shaah, a special teaching for the moment. After all, only communal offerings of the entire nation were brought on the Shabbat. This distinction went to the tribe of Efraim because his father Yosef kept Shabbos in Mitzrayim, as it says (43:16) utevoach tevach vhachen,” the last word is understood to mean to prepare for Shabbat. PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: IN HONOR OF PARSHAT MIKEITZ, SHABBAT CHANUKAH AND ROSH CHODESH TEVET

Based on the Gemara Moed Katan (16b), the Rabbis teach, “Tzaddik gozer v’Hakadosh Boruch Hu mekayem,” meaning Hashem listens to the directives of a Tzaddik. Moreover, the fact that any tribe brought their offering on a Shabbat is a hora’at sha’ah, a special teaching for the moment. After all, only communal offerings of the entire nation were brought on the Shabbat. This distinction went to the tribe of Efraim because his father Yosef kept Shabbos in Mitzrayim, as it says (43:16) “u’tevoach tevach v’hachen,” the last word is understood to mean to prepare for Shabbat.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS

This week the children enjoyed many special Chanukah activities. They baked Chanukah cookies using cookie cutters in the shapes of the letters nun, gimel, shin and hey, for nes gadol haya sham. They sang and danced to their favorite Chanukah songs during music with Morah Ilana and her guitar. The children loved watching the Chanukah puppet show put together by our talented morot. The highlight of the week was our annual Chanukah chagiga. The children and their parents lit the candles, sang songs and told the Chanukah story together in the classrooms. Then both classes joined together in the big room for Chanukah crafts, games and yummy latkes and sufganiyot! The children all took home some challah dough to bake as part of the world-wide challah bake for a refuah shelema for our friend Sophie! We wish you all a happy Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom.
