A GLOBAL CONCEPT

Leisure centres • Gyms • Schools • Youth centres • Disability groups • plus much more!

The aim of the SHOKK concept and brand is to create exciting and stimulating environments to ensure young people are engaging in a positive physical activity experience. If there is one thing we pride ourselves on at SHOKK, it is our understanding of young people and that our offering is designed and branded uniquely to appeal to this demographic. Once your new youth members buy into the SHOKK experience, your site’s

retention battle is almost won. Young people need a brand they can identify with. This is where SHOKK’s strength lies. SHOKK is far more than a youth gym. It is about making physical activity acceptable, fashionable, and (although only adults would ever say it), cool! The brand strength reinforces the importance and the ethos behind SHOKK’s range of peripheral products and merchandise.

The SHOKKedition multiplayer dance system is a truly innovative product that has quite simply been a phenomenon since its launch in the UK market in early 2007. SHOKK have led the way in its progression and continued success, supplying 100s of systems to leisure facilities, schools and youth centres.

The public response to these installations has been nothing short of staggering. SHOKK’s groundbreaking, wireless Game2move Multiplayer Dancemat System is now even better, new and improved. The result...the most advanced Dancemat software on the market and the ultimate gaming experience.

SHOKK are the market leading global brand, specialising in youth physical activity, health and fitness.

Helen Ives, Feltham School Sports Partnership

SHOKK are head and shoulders

above the other providers due to their holistic

approach to youth activity, they don’t just put the kit

in but provide extensive support and training to make

sure the project is a success. SHOKK are now the preferred

partner for the partnership and in my experience other

systems do not offer the progression. I consider the SHOKK

Game2move product the best on the market and one that

supports our High Quality Pathway.

WHY CHOOSE US?

Page 3: SHOKKedition Multiplayer Dancemat System

KEYThe concept of the system is still as simple as ever; users watch a sequence of arrows on screen and use the timing of the beat to hit on the pad the corresponding arrow with feet or hands.

The SHOKKedition system is very addictive and users may not even realise they are improving all the key components of fitness, hand to eye co-ordination and concentration.

The range in levels enables players to choose songs that range from one step every couple of seconds to over 10 steps per second. Users tend to choose songs that appear challenging yet passable; effectively the exercise aspect becomes exciting as the skill of the player naturally increases. The new software has been completely modernised to accommodate all kinds of people.

Split screen option for multi-level competition

The connectivity creates an opportunity for groups and individuals to compete ‘Live’ across the internet. There is a great potential for worldwide game play with our international partners.

Page 4: SHOKKedition Multiplayer Dancemat System

The system simply comprises of a Dancemat, a wireless laptop with the software and the music. The laptop is installed with SHOKK Game2Move software and a large number of songs, corresponding choreography and connected to an external LCD/plasma screen or projector. The system has internet capability meaning new updates and songs can be simply and regularly downloaded.

...SHAPES SIZES AND ABILITY! At SHOKK our target audience is young people aged 5-18 year olds who want to get involved in fun and engaging activities. However, the Game2move concept works just as effectively

with adults, the elderly and individuals with mental or physical disability.

LEADINGRELIABLE & DURABLEUltimate durability and reliability, the SHOKK system is virtually maintenance free which means less fuss and most importantly, more playing. The reaction of the pads has been shown to be far more receptive and sensitive than any of the other mats in the interactive market, more reliable results and 99.9% accurate.

SPLIT-SCREEN TECHNOLOGYThe system facilitates a split screen option with up to three different levels of difficulty so users can feel comfortable playing at their preferred level of ability, yet still competing with friends.

UP TO 32 PLAYERSThe software can be used by up to 32 players and is a fun and challenging group exercise dance game of perceptive and physical skill.

UNRIVALLED TRAINING SUPPORTAs a national centre of excellence, SHOKK provide all the training and support you need to use the software effectively, programme sessions for different age groups, run competitions and care for the system long term.

EASY TRANSPORT AND STORAGEWith optimum mobility, only a small space is required for simple and effective storage of both the system and mats. The area can be used for other activities, not just the dancemats.

MODERN CHART MUSICA wide variety of well-known commercial songs and artists catering to an extensive range of musical tastes including hip hop, pop, rock, classical and salsa.

FLEXIBLE CONTROLThe new SHOKK systems are integrated with a laptop rather than a computer hard drive so the instructor can control the programme whilst monitoring the activity of the users. The dual controlled system makes it manageable for the instructor/ player to command the controls and pick the chosen level of difficulty effortlessly.

The Changing Face of PE: Exergaming vs Traditional Activities.

Nick WilliamsUniversity of WolverhamptonDr. Matt WyonUniversity of Wolverhampton

Correspondence to:[email protected] technologies are becoming increasingly popular in physical education settings with performance analysis software and laptops all becoming a day-to-day occurrence. Physical educators are beginning to introduce students to ‘Exergaming’ (exercise and gaming) to try and engage youngsters in PE. (Trout and Christie, 2007, Mohnsen, 2005).The purpose of this study was to investigate physiological variables whilst on the dance mat compared toa traditional PE lessons.

METHODS.Nine volunteer participants (15-16 years) wore Sensewear monitors to record physiological variables (energy expenditure, average Mets and MVPA).Four types of PE lesson were monitored over a 3month period (Dance Mats, Mats & Circuits, Trampoline and Badminton). One session was chosen from each category for data analysis.

Physiological variables were then compared between the four sessions.

CONCLUSIONS & RELEVANCEThe ‘Dance Mats’ proved to be successful at getting year eleven girls physically active. More research is needed into the adherence ofusing the dance mats ,in particular with youngsters dropping out of traditional PE ,and how it could be integrated further into the PE curriculum.

RESULTS

DISCUSSIONFindings identified that the ‘Dance Mat’ session produced the highest average Mets / minute (5.7Mets) along with the highest energy expenditure (183cals).

The ‘Mats & Circuits’ and ‘Badminton’ produced the highest time spent in MVPA (95%), followed by the ‘Dance Mats’ (85%). The ‘Dance Mats’ kept participants physically active for a total of 95% of the session.

‘the DOC’

SHOKK now employ Dr. Lee Graves as Head of Research and Development, recruited directly from leading academic institution, Liverpool John Moores University. Dr. Graves is one of the leading researchers in the UK in the area of interactive gaming.

For my PHD I investigated the effect of active video games on physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health in young people. I gained detailed knowledge and experience of measuring physical activity on equipment like Dancemats in children and adolescents.

KNOWTHE

FACTS

Chart Music? Will You Get Regular Upgrades?

How Many Pads? How Are Operational Issues Dealt With?

Suitable Training? How Are Mats Powered?

Ensure on any system you purchase that you have modern music and songs that you would hear in the charts. This is really important to keep young people engaged. Most systems won’t offer this as it means more work on applying brand new step patterns and music licence fees for the supplier. SHOKK offer all this with upgrades available to download on request.

The SHOKK software progresses with time and updates are readily available to ensure your investment is sustained. The great advantage with the SHOKK Game2move system is that it is internet compatible. Therefore, all the updates can be simply downloaded without the need to send any hardware back.

In our experience it is important to keep things simple, hence why SHOKK use 4 pads on the mats rather than 5 or even more. The 4 pad system provides a step diameter ideal for young people of all ages and is also the original system used in arcades across the globe, something youngsters are used to using.

In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your system you need to know that it is going to be dealt with quickly and effectively. SHOKK’s dedicated team aim to respond to all issues within 48 hours and 95% of issues are resolved online. Parts are readily available and our demo mats haven’t had a single operational problem in 18 months!

Training is crucial to the delivery and the long term success of any installation. SHOKK therefore cover much more than just operating the system. All the session planning, programming and curriculum mapping is provided in the 3 Step training support package and an education pathway is provided to identify when extra support might be required.

Having used mats operated with both chargers and batteries we have found that the most practical solution is battery powered. This means that there is little downtime i.e. no waiting for mats to be charged. The batteries, which may be rechargeable, can just be replaced quickly and easily. The SHOKK Dancemats turn themselves off after 60 seconds of non-use, to ensure battery life is maximised, on average usage the batteries can last up to 6months.

Naseem Akhtar, Project Manager,

Saheli Adventure Hub

At the Hub, we operate an

empowerment programme, which allows

all women to tell us what activities they want

to take part in. As a result we have incorporated a

number of new activities all inspired to motivate our

members. The SHOKKedition Dancemats have been

central to the scheme and have helped us reach out

to an even wider audience.
