From the Rabbi’s Study

How Much Do You Really Know About Israel?

Dear Friends:

Israel is an important part of our identity as

Jews. On Shabbat mornings we have a prayer for

the welfare of the State of Israel. On Yom Kippur

we have an appeal for Israel Bonds. We encourage

our teens to visit Israel, and whenever we have an

“Ask the Rabbi” session for Kiddush Konversation, a

lot of the questions invariably deal with Israel. But

how much do you really know about Israel? A few

years ago I create an “Israel General Knowledge

Quiz” which I gave my students during the first ses-

sion of a class on modern Israel. See how much you

know; answers are at the bottom. Good luck and

have fun!

Israel General Knowledge Quiz

1. In what year did Israel gain its independ-

ence?

2. Who is the current Prime Minister of Israel?

3. Who was the first Prime Minister of Israel?

4. Who is the current President of Israel?

5. Who was the first President of Israel?

6. What is the legislature or parliament of Is-

rael called? How many members does it

have?

7. In what year was the Six Day War fought?

8. In what year was the Yom Kippur War

fought?

Hi-

So, now that the dust has settled on our Holiday

season…

Boy, it was good! I mean, everything went

really well. Don’t you think? The Services were

meaningful. Our cantor Kim provided us with an

authentic, traditional, absolutely beautiful musical

back-drop, facilitating the work we each had at

hand. The Rabbi was brilliant as ever, keeping us

moving along while sharing with us his teachings,

his Drashes, and thoughts. Our volunteers did a

wonderful job reading Torah, Haftorah, preliminary

services ushering, greeting, handing out Aliyot and

other honors. Sisterhood came through with a su-

perb Break Fast at Holiday’s end. Men’s Club built

our Sukkah, and we continued our tradition of

“Spaghetti in the Sukkah”. Yasher Koach to all who

helped make it all possible.

So, now that the dust has settled on our

Holiday season, the kids are back in school, you’re

re-establishing your family rhythm, …Put a little

more Shul in your life! We are here – ready, willing,

and able to enrich your Jewish lives in endless

ways. Try us out and see.

Our Erev Shabbat services now start at

6:30. They are short and sweet, with a brief Drash

from the Rabbi, and an Oneg. Check it out!

Men’s Club is inviting your ideas, so give

them a try. Call or e-mail Richard Jaffe or Tom Log-

gie and let them know what you’d like them to do.

Adult Education is featuring Torah study

with Rabbi Arian on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each

month, with a focus on Rashi’s commentary.

We are doing a study program jointly with

Shaare Torah on the topic of Social Justice.

Sisterhood activities are in full swing, with

Mah Jongg, Sip n’ Schmooz, Bake n’ Babble, Dine

Around, Book Club, Crafters Club, lots of things

happening.

Our Library has some incredible books wait-

ing for you. Take a peek!

The Religious School is up and running, as is

the post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah Kavod (Honor) Society.

They get to meet with the Rabbi off site to think

and learn out of the box. So far, they met at

Panera’s and in the Arian Sukkah.

President’s Message

Hello, Everyone. I hope that each of you are well and gearing up for time with family and friends at Thanks-giving. This is an opportunity for me to say thank you for the support and love you have shown Charles and I over the last few months; you folks are good, caring people and a real blessing.

A huge mazel tov to Gail Lieberman and Bill Hanson! Their son just graduated from the police academy in Louisiana and won 2 out of 3 of the highest achievement awards. Way to go!

We are also proud of Aiden Ballonoff, son of Janet and Les Bal-lonoff, who just advanced to his yellow belt. Wow!

Zakai Kelly, son of Leah Kelly and grandson of Linda Gottsagen, just competed in a tournament at Han Mi Martial Arts. I don’t know about you folks, but I rest easier knowing we have these fine young men around to protect us if needed.

L'shalom,

Rabbi Charles L. Arian

Our daily Minyan is going strong, thanks to

you all. We should all be proud that we are main-

taining this important service to our community vir-

tually without fail. You can help out by stopping by

even when it’s not your week, Trust me, you’ll

make an important difference. (Sunday mornings

seem to be the only real problem; we could use 3

or 4 additional people). And, of course, we con-

tinue with Shabbat morning services, often led by

our Cantor Kim Komrad.

The point of all this is to say, get involved!

Pick a group, drop in, suggest activities, help plan

them, attend them. As I said on Yom Kippur, move

Kehilat Shalom up on the food chain of your priori-

ties. You’ll find it really rewarding.

Stay tuned next month for some specific

suggestions. Meanwhile, Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Mike

Torah Fund

Nat’ah karem is a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman, who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity,

independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin/pendant. Women’s League’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

Men’s Club News

Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life

It is time to begin the design of the new Kehilat Shalom Men’s Club! Envisioned is a program of fun, learning and community service. But to do this we need to get you involved (Yes, I mean you). Here are the first two steps. I would like to hear from all of you as to what you want to see in a Men’s Club. What will it take to get you to come to events? What type events would you attend (and support)? Send me an email. Short bullets, neat paragraphs or a ram-bling rant! Sit down and do it right now. Send to [email protected]. If you are not a writer…………. Come to the Men’s Club Breakfast and Pro-gram Kickoff at 10:30am Sunday, October 25th. During the breakfast we will both present ideas we have collected, and get new ideas. I hope to inter-est a few of you in serving on the Men’s Club board. So we know how much food we need RSVP to [email protected], or call the office at 301.869-7699. The Men’s Club will be sponsoring a fall cleanup at 10am Sunday, November 15th. Brings your rakes and lets make short order on fall’s bounty. Interested in a Poker night? The current group is having trouble getting enough people to play on a week night. If you are interested in joining in on a poker night, let us know when you would like to meet so that we can make it happen. Looking to meet once a month. RSVP to [email protected], or call the of-fice at 301.869-7699.

Hope to see you there. B'Shalom, Tom

- If you have an idea of something for us to do, let us know, share it. And, share it with your friends. Indeed, you’re going to end up owning that idea, and making it happen, and that’s as it should be.

Fourth - We tell the world what we are doing;

Fifth - We encourage those who can to increase their financial support

Sixth - We continue to find ways to never turn anyone away for lack of resources

Seventh - We continue to rent out space to folks in the area with need for space

This vision will succeed only if you all want it to. You need to be willing to help, to commit more of your time and resources. To those of you who are suffering hard times financially, we really appreciate your doing what you can. Please don’t think I’m thinking of you with my message.

***But, to those of you who are fortunate to be able to have choices, we need you to move Kehilat Shalom up in the food chain of your priorities. ***

The simple truth is that when we were a big institution, you could accept the moral obligation to join, to pay dues… or not. Some chose to say “I don’t really need a Shul, I don’t attend, except for holidays.” Some opted to just buy tickets, and that’s wonderful. We want people to buy tickets. We want to be here, and to assure we all have a place to be. But that requires being able to pay the mortgage, and have a core of members who care about our long term survival. And, as I mentioned, we are no longer an impersonal institution with a life of its own. We are now a relatively small group of like minded people who share an interest in our continued existence.

Even through my short stay so far on this hot seat, I can assure you that people have no qualms about calling us when they are in need because of a family emergency, whether or not they are members. And, we want to help. Because we are a group of members, but we are here to serve the community. But I think the community has a responsibility too. A responsibility to do their part to see to it that we remain available for them.

It comes back to the fact that we’re no longer a big institution. We’re a group of people who share an interest in our continued existence.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

News

The School Board would like to welcome back our three teachers for this year: Tammy Jaffe (K-2 class), Lindsey Jack-son (3-4 class), and Elissa Balsley (5-7) class. Rabbi Arian is heading our Kavod Society (post-b’nai Mitzvah group) and Tammy Jaffe leading monthly Junior Congregation services.

We started the school year with 17 students in Religious School and 7 students attending the first Kavod Society meet-ing. The Religious School year kicked-off with a Havurah (family learning) session in which Kehilat Shalom member Aaron Wertlieb came as a guest speaker to share his knowl-edge and passion for bee-keeping and harvesting honey.

While we may not have a Youth Director at the moment (although we are still looking for one), we had our first youth event making sukkah decorations. We are planning to work with parents to continue having youth events until we hire a dedicated Youth Director.

The next Kavod Society meeting is November 2 and the next Junior Congregation is November 7.

New Adult Education Bible Class

Rabbi Arian’s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at

the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat.

Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi’s commentary. Rashi (1040 - 1105) lived in Troyes, France and is

considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students

of all levels and his lead to over 300 “supercommentaries,” meaning commentaries on Rashi’s commentary itself.

We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi’s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the

text. The class will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each calendar month right after evening

minyan.
