INFORMATION “The Golfing Year” is the period 1 October to 30 September “The Committee” shall mean “the Captain’s Committee”, the Chairman of which shall be the Club Captain. A separate Handicap Committee will be responsible for the Handicapping System, and will report to and be responsible to the Captain`s Committee “Competition Rules” A copy of these are kept in the men’s Locker Room and all members should familiarise themselves with them Handicaps For competitions the three handicap divisions are: - Division 1 Handicaps up to 12 Division 2 Handicaps from 13 to 18 Division 3 Handicaps from 19 to 28 Before a member can participate in any club competition he must have an official club handicap. An official club handicap is obtained by submitting three cards for consideration. Full details are on the Notice Board (Handicaps section). In submitting such a card the following conditions apply: 1 the marker shall be a member of Shirley Golf Club 2 the marker shall have an official handicap 3 rounds should be played on three separate days. 4 they should be played from the white tees. Under certain circumstances play may be

from the yellow tees but this must be indicated on the card. 5 Members must first register in the Professional’s shop before each round is played Qualification Criteria for entering various Club Competitions (the Competition

Handicap rule) 1. To enter certain club competitions (as specified in the rules) members must have

a Competition Handicap as defined by EGU rules on the date that the draw is made. This is obtained by returning three cards with a qualifying score either: - a. within the previous calendar year or b. during the calendar year of the competition but prior to entering the competition.

2. Certain competitions are not open to Associate Members, these are listed on page 62. Associate Members are eligible to play in all other competitions open to Full Members

Minimum Entry Requirement A minimum entry of 6 competitors (or for pair’s competitions, 6 pairs) is required for a

competition to proceed. Transfer of Handicaps A new member joining from another club and having an official handicap at that club shall retain that handicap subject to:-

1 any adjustment due under the corresponding handicap tables 2 receipt of confirmation from his previous club Congu Rules The rules and recommendations of the Council of National Golfing Unions (Congu) in respect of a unified handicapping system, including various amendments from time to time, will apply to all competitions. Knockout Competitions 1 It is the responsibility of both parties to arrange the match in good time. However, the

party making first contact will have priority in offering dates and such dates must be reasonable and should include weekends. If the party being offered the dates cannot accept or offer a reasonable compromise then the first contacting party can claim the tie. Should either party feel that unreasonable conditions are being offered please see clause 3.

2 It is essential that matches are played within the set time scale. It is therefore emphasised that contact between parties be made as soon as practicable to ensure sufficient time to arrange it is available

3 Difficulty in arranging any match should be referred to the competition organiser. 4 Where possible players are asked to avoid official medal/stableford competition

days when playing matches but may play on such days provided:-

a. No matches are permitted to start before 08:00 am b. Only three-ball matches are permitted to book and play before 10:30 am, i.e.

Participants in either the medal or stableford (Bye Law 33). c. After 10:30 am four-ball or two-ball matches may be played provided a

starting time has been booked d. All 2 & 4 balls have equal priority on the course although any match failing

to maintain its station should afford others the normal courtesy of calling them through.

5 In the event of one side or one team member failing to turn up at the agreed time the opposition may claim the match, except in the case of Fourball match where one opponent may play against the other team if he so wishes.

Buggies A member may use a golf buggy, inclusive of the Club Hire buggies, whilst competing in any club competition provided the course has not at the time been declared unfit for trolleys and/or buggies, and as long as they have suitable insurance cover in place. Exception: Buggies may not be used in 36 hole competitions played over a single day unless the competitor can provide a valid current medical certificate of disability as defined by the EGU guidelines and has requested permission to use a golf buggy by the closing date for the competition they wish to enter. Practice Practice and/or play on the course is not permitted before playing in a stroke play competition on the same day except on designated practice areas. NB: The practice area adjacent to the 13th fairway is closed on competition days Suspension of play

If the committee or its authorised representative considers that the course is not in a playable condition or that there are circumstances which render play impossible, they shall have the authority to order the temporary suspension of play or to declare play null and void and to cancel all scores for the round in question Competitions 1 Starting points:

- the first and tenth tees only are authorised starting points for stroke play competitions, unless otherwise designated by the Captain’s Committee

2 Shortened course:

- if the course is shortened the balance of holes to be played shall be from the starting point of the match

3 Sudden death:

- in sudden death situations to decide tied matches the 19th hole shall be the hole on which the match started

4 Stoke allowances:

- stroke allowances must be taken in accordance with the indices shown on the card

5 Starting times:

- a starting time sheet will be normally be displayed approximately 10 days prior to monthly medals and stablefords

- any player unable to play at the time he has reserved must delete his entry at the earliest possible date

- as a matter of courtesy he should also advise his intended playing partners - if the starting sheet is no longer available the club manager or professional

should be advised of any cancellations - failure to turn up at the appointed time without due notice may result in

disciplinary actions being taken Introduction of Guests (Shirley Golf Club Bye-Laws Part 3 – miscellaneous No.43 and 44) Members may introduce guests:-

Up to 3 guests per member may be introduced at the reduced rate with a limit that no guest is allowed to play more than 6 times during the club year. A member must play with the guest(s) he or she introduces. On a competition day guests may not be introduced before 12.00 Noon (with the proviso that the competition is not scheduled beyond that time. ) (April~September) or 2.00pm (October~March)”

(For the avoidance of doubt, visitors may not play as a member’s guest more than 6 times during the club year in total, i.e.; even if introduced by different members the total of introductions must not exceed 6)

Visitors are welcome except on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. They should be members of a recognised golf club and must produce a letter of introduction and/or handicap certificate on demand. Visitors may not use the snooker room. Course Etiquette 1 The professional and the two captains of the club have priority on the course. They

should always be offered the courtesy of being called through. 2 Quicker players should always be called through. Do not hold up play on the course.

Under the bye law 27 members playing in competitions should be called through by players not in competitions.

3 Always be aware that voices can carry a long way – consider others and keep noise to

a minimum 4 Always rake bunkers, replace divots and repair pitchmarks. 5 All golfers on the course should give way to and call through faster playing games or

players. Precedence should also be given to Matches where appropriate and reasonable. (bye law 30)

Amendment of Rules The committee may amend the Rules for the Men’s Competitions at any time. Such amendments will be incorporated into the revisions to the Rules from time to time, but any delay in producing such revisions will not invalidate the amendments decided upon by the Committee at that time.

AJEX TROPHY

18 HOLE STABLEFORD

1 An 18 hole stableford competition played in conjunction with a stableford

competition 2 Open to all full male members with a Competition Handicap 3 The entrance fee will go to the AJEX charity and will be decided by the

committee annually 4 There will be an optional sweep which will be determined by the committee

and will be split

- 60% winner - 40% runner up

AM/AM COMPETITIONS INTERNAL

18 HOLE SHOTGUN

1 Open to all male members over the age of 18 with an official club handicap 2 Teams of four players (seeded) will be drawn from the entry sheet 3 The format of the draw and method of play will be decided by the committee 4 The entry fee will be fixed by the committee and must be paid before play

commences 5 In the event of a tie the winners will be decided on the last 9, 6, 3 or 1 holes 6 Prizes will be selected by the competition organiser 7 The committee may introduce such variations in the format as it sees fit

1 Open to any full or restricted male member who has played twice or more for

the ‘B’ team during the season (or since the last B Team Cup) 2 A list of eligible players will be produced by the ‘B’ team captain 3 In the event of a tie the winner will be decided on the last 9, 6, 3 or 1 holes 4 Entry fees as decided by the ‘B’ team captain shall be paid at the time of entry 5 Normal stableford rules shall apply

CAPTAIN’S SALVER

SINGLES MATCH PLAY TROPHY

1 Open to the 16 full male members returning the best scores in the Captain’s

Day Stableford and is a knockout competition (see Captain’s Day Stableford below)

To qualify, competitors must have a Competition Handicap. 2 In the event of a tie the qualifiers will be determined on the basis of the better

back 9-6-3 and 1 holes 3 The 16 qualifiers will be drawn to play a singles knockout competition off

current handicap 4 All players are equally responsible for making arrangements as to when to

play, provided those dates are within those laid down by the committee for the completion of each round. Difficulty in arranging dates should be reported to the Competition Organiser.

5 If a date has been fixed to play a round of this competition and temporary

greens are in operation that day, the match shall be played on those greens unless it is possible re rearrange the match within the required time scale

6 In the event of a tie ‘sudden death’ will operate 7 Handicap allowance – Full difference A referee may be appointed by the committee for the final.

CAPTAIN’S DAY STABLEFORD

18 HOLE STABLEFORD 1 Normal stableford rules shall apply 2 Juniors up to handicap of 18 may enter the Captain’s Day Stableford 3 The top 16 full male members who have a Competition Handicap qualify to

compete in the Captain’s Salver.

STROKE PLAY 2 MEDAL ROUNDS

1 36 hole qualifying competition played off scratch 2 Each individual round qualifying for handicap adjustment. 3 Open to full male members and to juniors with a maximum handicap of 12 The committee will decide annually a) times and order of starting b) entry fee, sweep and sweep allocation

c) in the event of a tie there will be a play-off over 18 holes, which if still tied will be settled by a further ‘sudden death’ play-off

4 To qualify, competitors must have a Competition Handicap.

ERIC LEEK TROPHY

MATCH PLAY

1 A singles match play knockout competition played off current handicap 2 Open to all full male members with a Competition Handicap.

3 If during the period of the competition a player’s handicap shall increase

beyond that set as a maximum for the competition, that player shall play off the ‘maximum’ or such lower figure as may subsequently become applicable to that player

4 The committee will decide annually: a) entrance fee b) the draw c) dates for the completion of each round 5 The entry fee must be paid at the time of entry 6 Both players are responsible for making arrangements as to when to play,

provided those dates are within those laid down by the committee for the completion of each round. However, it is in the interest of all competitors to play their matches as soon as possible. Difficulty in arranging dates should be reported to the Competition Organiser.

7 If a date has been fixed to play a particular round and the temporary greens are

in operation, then the match must be played on those greens, unless it is possible to rearrange the match within the required time scale

8 In the event of a tie after 18 holes the “sudden death” principle applies 9 Handicap allowance – Full difference A referee may be appointed to the final

FAMILY FOURSOMES

18 HOLE FOURSOMES STROKE PLAY 1 One day event 2 18 hole foursome stroke play competition 3 Not open to restricted members. 4 Playing partners may be any combination of immediate family i.e. Husband,

Wife, Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, Grandparents, Grandchildren and In-laws. Players must hold a Competition Handicap.

5 Playing handicap entry limits: - Ladies 36 Men 28 Boys 28 Girls 36 6 Seeded draw using combined handicaps 7 Entrants must sign in and pay the entry fee on the day. If they fail to do so they

are deemed not to have entered the competition and their score does not count for the competition.

8 Handicap allowance – Half of aggregate handicap of partners 9 Gentlemen & boys to play from White competition tees 11 Either partner to drive ODD holes, i.e. choice to be made by each partnership

before start of play 12 In the event of a tie, winners will be decided on better back 9,6,3 or last holes

taking handicap into consideration 13 Course may be played prior to this competition on the day NB This event is normally followed by Supper, arranged by the Lady Captain. NB This is played on the same day as Father & Sons competition. Entry to

Father & Sons competition to take precedence over Family Foursomes.

FATHER AND SON TROPHY

18 HOLE FOURSOME COMPETITION

1 An 18 hole foursome strokeplay competition played from the white tees 2 Open to all male members whose sons are also members – both must have an

active club handicap 3 In this context the word ‘son’ shall include stepsons and adopted sons 4 No pairing other than father and son is allowed 5 Date, starting times and playing partners will be arranged by the organisers 6 Handicap allowance will be half of aggregate handicap of partners 7 The committee reserve the right to decide on a handicap maximum for juniors 8 In the event of a tie the winners will be decided by count back over the last

9,6,3 or last holes 9 Should it not be possible to arrange a foursome group the organisers shall

provide a suitable marker 10 Such a marker shall be an unrelated club member with an official handicap 11 If held on the same day as the Family Foursomes then this competition takes

precedence i.e. a Father and Son pairing may not enter the Family Foursomes competition.

18 HOLES STROKE PLAY

1 Qualifiers shall be the first, second and third players from each division in the

monthly medals during the previous golfing year (1st October to 30th September)

2 An 18 hole stroke play competition 3 Played off the white tees 4 Full Handicap allowance 5 Played in three divisions as for monthly medals 6 Monthly medal conditions apply 7 This will normally be run in conjunction with the October monthly medal

GOLFER OF THE YEAR TROPHY

1 Awarded to the golfer who has returned the lowest aggregate of five monthly

medal cards during the golfing year 2 Handicap limit 18. Only scores achieved in divisions 1 and 2 can contribute to

the aggregate score. 3 In the event of two or more players having the same aggregate score the result

shall be decided by a further 18 holes of stroke play 4 If the scores are still tied, the winner will be decided by a count back over the

last 9, 6, 3 or last holes, taking into account handicap 5 A referee may be appointed by committee for such a play off 6 Any play off shall be a non qualifying competition. 7 Wednesday medal scores do not qualify for this trophy

LOUIS BLOOM CUP

36 HOLE STROKE PLAY (HANDICAP)

1 A 36 hole qualifying competition, open to full male members with a

Competition Handicap. First round to be played on a Saturday and 2nd round on the immediate following Sunday. The competition is played off current handicap, with each individual round qualifying for handicap adjustment, but no handicap adjustment between rounds.

2 Entrants must play both rounds. Those failing to complete both rounds may not

be accepted for the following year’s competition The committee will decide annually: a) handicap limit for entrants b) maximum number of entrants c) times and order of starting d) entry fees and sweep 3 Players must report to the starter two minutes prior to their starting time. Penalty

for lateness is a two shot penalty up to five minutes late, after which the penalty is disqualification.

4 First round cards must be returned after completion of the first round. 5 In the event of a tie after 36 holes the committee will arrange a play-off which

will consist of one round of 18 holes stroke play 6 If two or more competitors are still tied after the additional 18 holes the winner

will be decided on a count back over the last 9,6,3 or final holes allowing for handicap

For any such play off the committee may arrange a referee

7 In the event of weather problems causing one day to be cancelled the Committee will decide on the available options to complete the tournament

MONKSPATH BOWL

1 A 36 hole stableford competition played over 2 successive Sundays open to

full male members with a Competition Handicap. 2 Handicaps applicable at the commencement of the competition remain in force

over the 36 holes 3 The entrance fee and optional sweep will be decided by the committee

annually 4 The second round will normally be run in conjunction with the monthly

stableford 5 In the event of a tie after 36 holes the committee will arrange a play off

comprising a further 18 hole stableford. Should two or more competitors still be tied after the play off the winner will be decided by count back over the last 9,6,3 or final holes

6 The sweep will be pooled over 36 holes and divided as follows: - first round winner 15% second 10% - second round winner 15% second 10% - overall winner 25% second 15%

third 10%

MONTHLY MEDALS

18 HOLE STROKE PLAY

1 An 18 hole stroke play competition open to all full male members and juniors

within the restrictions placed on them by the “junior section rules” 2 Played off white tees, unless at the discretion of the Committee the medal may

be played off yellow tees within the definition of the CONGU rules. NOTE: Pre-advice to the Head Greenkeeper is essential

3 Full handicap allowance 4 Played in three divisions - Division 1 - handicaps up to 12 - Division 2 - handicaps 13 ~ 18 - Division 3 - handicaps 19 ~ 28 For midweek medals there will be a single division. 5 A start sheet, to book times, will usually be available approx 10 days prior to

the competition 6 Competitors must sign in and pay their entrance fee prior to playing. Failure to

1 An 18 hole qualifying medal will be played to determine the 32 qualifiers who will take part in a match play knockout. The 32 qualifiers will be decided by a count back over the last 9,6,3, or final holes in the event of a tie for qualifying places. The qualifying medal may be held in conjunction with the monthly medal.

permutation of three or six cards respectively 5 The competition extends over three days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) of

the three bank holidays (Spring, Easter and August) or at such other times as the committee shall decide

STROKE PLAY KNOCKOUT

1 A non-qualifying stroke play knockout competition open to all full male

members with a Competition Handicap. 2 Full handicap applies as per stroke play rules. All cards must be returned,

failure to do so may result in disqualification 3 The draw will be made by the committee 4 Entry fees must be paid on entry 5 Dates will be set for the completion of each round 6 It is the responsibility of both parties to arrange the match in good time.

Difficulty in arranging matches should be referred to the competitions organiser, whose decision will be final.

7 If a date has been fixed to play a particular round and temporary greens are in

operation, then the match should be played on those greens unless it is possible to rearrange the match within the required time scale

8 As this is a stroke play competition played in matches, certain special rules

apply

a stroke play rules apply except that a competitor may concede the match with the consent of his opponent, otherwise the winner of each match is the player who returns the lower net score over 18 holes

b practice on the course before a match on the day a match is to be
