The Information Technology (IT) Club at the Lewistown Campus recent lymet with Jane Neff, Director of Shelter Service Inc., and Teresa Fink, ShelterService’s Chair of the Board of Directors, to discuss how the IT Club canhelp the shelters faculty and residents.

For the last 30 years, Shelter Service Inc. provides temporary shelter forhomeless individuals from Mifflin and Juniata Count ies. The organizat ionhelps them to ident ify the cause of their homelessness and assists themwith job searching, sett ing goals, learning how to budget, and teachesthem how to find suitable housing opt ions.

During the init ial meeting, two major focus areas for the shelter werediscussed: the computer network and the development of a new website.The Club will be building the shelter’s website which will help provideinformation about the organizat ion to the community and allow theShelter to spread awareness about the many different donationsaccepted. They will also be helping the shelter implement working internetand Wi-Fi throughout the facility to ensure that the staff can effect ivelycont inue to perform their jobs and to make tasks such as job searchingeasier for the residents.

To further assess the building and computer network needs, the IT Clubvisited the shelter where they were able to tour the facility, and furtherdiscuss the project with Jane. During the tour, the club members wereable to see where and how they will need to run wires, and install servers.Phase two of the project will begin once students return from Spring Break,and will consist of them breaking down into groups to tackle this projectpiece by piece.

South Hil ls Announces 2019 Recipient of theKari Schlegel Memorial Scholarship

Becka Turner, a 2nd-yearstudent of our GraphicArts (GA) program, wasrecent ly honored withthe 2019 Kari SchlegelMemorial ScholarshipAward.

This scholarship wasestablished by the familyof Kari Lynn Schlegel, a2012 GA alumna whoselife and unt imely deathin 2016 touched the livesof many.

Each year, the GA program faculty members are tasked with choosing theaward recipient by ident ifying a current student who exhibits the t raitsthat Kari had when she was a student.

Criminal Just ice students from theLewistown Campus had theopportunity to tour the MifflinCounty Correct ions Facility to gaininsight into what is required to workin that type of environment.

Lieutenant Chambers lead thestudents throughout the facilityshowing them the medicaldepartment, and the inner facilitywhere the students were able tosee different types of securitymeasures used. Chambers alsoexplained the intake process, andhow disciplinary procedures arehandled within. Students had thechance to ask quest ions on theprogramming available to inmatesas well as prisoner classificat ionprocedures.

PBL Members Compete at 48th AnnualPBL State Leadership Conference

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) memberscompeted in the 48th AnnualState Leadership Conferenceheld in Harrisburg, PA. Theconference provided studentswith an opportunity to hearpresentat ions on leadership,network with other part icipants,and part icipate in competit iveevents.

Splash of Blood Day

Medical Assistant (MA) students at ourState College Main Campus and LewistownCampus part icipated in Splash of BloodDay.

This annual event encourages fellowstudents and South Hills faculty & staff tovolunteer their arms so the MA studentscan draw “just a splash” of their bloodallowing them to perfect their techniques,as well as helping to achieve the NationalHealthcareer Associat ion (NHA)cert ificat ion requirements, which include aminimum of 30 successful venipunctures.

at South Hills. Inpreparat ion, thestudents take a JobSearch Skills coursewhich covers topics suchas resumé and coverletter writ ing,interviewing skills, andjob-seeking methods.

To improve interviewingskills, studentspart icipate in mockinterviews with localemployers in their respect ive fields. Sandy Cramer, Co-Owner of the HROffice, Inc, interviewed the Administ rat ive Professional (AP) and BusinessAdminist rat ion - Management & Market ing (BAMM) students, and LeanneCondo, Human Resource Manager at Blatek, interviewed the EngineeringTechnology (ET) students.

Job Search instructor, Eleanor Mart in, added, “Mock interviews are agreat way for our students to not only get an understanding as to what toexpect during the interview process, but they also provide them with t ipsand feedback on areas they can improve on to be successful when jobsearching.”

Before our students embark ontheir internships, they arerequired to complete capstoneprojects which are assignmentsthat require the students touse all of the skills they'reacquired throughout their t imeat South Hills.

Our Criminal Just ice (CJ)students are given a case tosolve in which they mustdemonstrate their crime sceneinvest igat ion skills, andunderstanding of lawenforcement procedures andrequirements by applyingcriminal just ice concepts. Eachof the projects involveresponding to an emergencyprocedure and/or crime,processing the crime scene,following it through the system,and preparing the proper

Health Careers Club Donates to the Jared Box Project

Members of the HealthCareers Club at our StateCollege Campus heldfundraisers throughout themonth of February Februaryto collect donations to beable to purchase items toinclude in Jared Boxes.Through the help of thefundraisers, the club wasable to assemble 35 JaredBoxes to be donated.

The Jared Box Project is a nonprofit organizat ion that started in 2001providing boxes filled with small toys, games and act ivit ies to youngchildren who are current ly in the hospital receiving medical t reatment.

Community service is a huge part of student life at South Hills, especially forthe members of our clubs and service organizat ions. Each campus hosts anannual Student Appreciat ion Luncheon as a way to say thank you to the

Students Prepare for Internships

Students in Job Searchclass recent ly had theopportunity to hear fromVicky Barto, Director ofStaff Development forUpstream PhysicalRehab Group.

Barto has been inhuman resources andleadership developmentfor over 22 years, and is aJohn Maxwell cert ifiedcoach, speaker, and

trainer. She gave the students advice on how to conduct a successful jobsearch, st ressed the importance of keeping a posit ive mindset throughoutthe process, and covered a few do’s and don’ts when it comes topreparing their resumes.

Vicky shared that one of the greatest life lessons she has learned is that“You can only go as far as the limits you put on yourself. Release your limits.”Job Search instructor, Eleanor Mart in, added, “Preparing our students tobe ready for interviews and internships is very important, and shows themwhat to expect upon graduation. Vicky is very knowledgeable, and weappreciate her invest ing t ime in helping our students succeed. “

Graphic Arts Students Complete Capstone Projects

Second-year GraphicArts (GA) students atrecent ly presented theircapstone projectsfollowing the complet ionof the three typographyclasses in the program.The assignmentchallenged the studentswith creat ing ahand-bound typespecimen book.

A type specimen book is a printed brochure, catalog, or book published bytype foundries and printers to demonstrate the range and quality of theirwork or to introduce new font to consumers, and have been an essent ialpart of the print ing t rade since the 15th century.

font with a range of variat ions and a topic about which to create thecontent for the book. Upon complet ion, they present their completedtype specimen books to their peers, the GA faculty, and other South Hillsfaculty and staff. Ray Liddick, GA Program Coordinator, providedcommentary about the art ists’ processes, emphasizing the lessons eachindividual learned throughout the process.

Lewistown Students Donate to Local Animal Shelter

Circle K, PBL, C.O.P.S. and Health Careers Club members presenting check to Cindy Shoey, President of ROFF

Club members at our Lewistown Campus recent ly held a chili cook-off, abake sale, and an ice cream sundae sale, where all proceeds weredonated to Rescue Our Furry Friends (ROFF) Animal Rescue. The Circle Kand Phi Beta Lambda clubs teamed up to raise $150, and an addit ional$125 donation was donated by the Circle K, PBL, C.O.P.S, and HealthCareers clubs.

ROFF is a non-profit organizat ion that has placed hundreds of cats anddogs in their forever homes since their launch in 2004. For more informationon how to donate to ROFF Animal Rescue visit : www.roffrescue.com

Lewistown First Friday Game Night

As part of Lewistown’s First Fridayevents, Information Technology (IT)Club members at the LewistownCampus organized and hosted agame night for members of the localcommunity.

Guests had the opportunity to minglewith IT club members as well as SouthHills staff and faculty while enjoying avariety of video and board games.
