2019 Report to the Community SHINE ON!
Dear Friends,
This past year is a reminder of just how quickly some things change – and others stay the same. Our Memory Care Home that you helped make possible, has celebrated its first successful full year. Our quality care remains steadfast even as we evolve to meet the changing needs of the community. With a 90% occupancy rate, we have demonstrated that we provide the best possible care for people living with dementia and their family members. What stayed the sameis our decades-long standard of high-quality care in our Assisted Living and Nursing Care homes.
In 2019, Shine on Seniors was our theme and our major event. We showcased the power of music with the extraordinary jazz musician and MSU professor, Rodney Whitaker and Friends. Craig Hammond shared a heart-warming story about how his father really loved music and benefitted from music therapy when he lived at St. Anne’s Mead.
“Shine On!” — that is what we strive to do every day — help our residents shine at whatever phase of life they are in.
n Our work continues and our need continues. We appreciate you making a tax-deductible gift to an organization you know and trust. As fiscally responsible stewards of your gifts, more than 80% of all income goes directly to care and programming. We have two important areas for you to consider supporting and you may use the envelope inserted in this report or donate securely online at www.stannesmead.org. n Mission: Possible to refurbish and renew our library and family lounges. We have two lounges available for naming (North Lounge and Library). The South Lounge is Committed.
n Angel Fund ~ This dedicated fund is a critical source of support for residents in need, often at the end of their life. The Angel Fund helps qualified residents with basic needs of medical care, room & board, activities of daily living and 24/7 supervision. The need continues to grow.
To keep St. Anne’s Mead at the forefront of issues that matter to an aging population, we are producing two major events for your enjoyment and education this year:
n May 15, 2020: 4th Annual Breakfast with the Bishop featuring our first breakfast with Bishop Bonnie A. Perry of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan at the Detroit Athletic Club. Guy Gordon, long-time Detroit broadcaster and host of his own show on News/Talk WJR 760-AM, will be our emcee! Tickets are on sale at www.stannesmead.org.
n September 16, 2020: “Hello, September,” featuring Caring for the Caregiver! In partnership with Beaumont, we are presenting an afternoon of inspirational speakers and stories, resources, a fall tasting and music. Admission is free and sponsorships are available.
For donor information, tickets and sponsorships on Breakfast with the Bishop and Hello, September: Caring for the Caregiver, please contact Peggy K. Goodwin at [email protected] or 248.557.1221, x 117.Thank you for all you do for St. Anne’s Mead!
Thank you for your unwavering support to St. Anne’s Mead.
Sincerely yours,
Jane Collins, Executive Director

2019: SHINE ON!
In 2019, St. Anne’s Mead (SAM) had the great fortune to receive a major gift from The Douglas F. Allison Foundation. Sarah H. Allison serves as President of the Foundation named for her late husband. Sarah learned of some the needs at SAM through Foundation board member, Craig Hammond, whose family has a long affiliation with St. Anne’s Mead.
We learned the good news of this major gift at Shine on Seniors, which Sarah and Craig both attended. They came to SAM in December to share some of the story of Mr. Allison’s extraordinary life and to personally present the Foundation’s check. Mr. Allison, who came to Detroit from Windsor, attended the University of Detroit and graduated as Valedictorian of his class.
He enjoyed a 22 year career at Ford Motor Company and then went on to serve as Senior Vice President of Campbell Ewald, where he was known as “the consummate conductor.” According to a colleague, “Doug led a body of talented people with strong egos. He knew that both the violin and the bass drum are needed to make great music, and he knew how to harmonize both.” His final professional accomplishment was leading his own market research firm, Allison-Fisher International, Inc., recognized as an innovative leader in the field.
As Mr. Allison’s own fortunes increased, so did his generosity to others. A few of the organizations Mr. Allison supported include The Salvation Army, William Beaumont Hospital and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Allison served on the boards of the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C.
The Douglas F. Allison Foundation was formed in 2014 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. We thank them for this wonderful gift, which will be used to renovate and name our South Lounge, enjoyed by residents, family members and visitors alike (see rendering).

SHINE ON SENIORS!
2019: YEAR IN REVIEW “SHINE ON!”
In October, we hosted Shine on Seniors ~ A Musical Tribute to our senior population featuring world-renowned jazz bassist and MSU professor, Rodney Whitaker and Friends!
Both events raised thousands of dollars for St. Anne’s Mead Mission: Possible campaign to refresh our lounges, lobby and library! Thank you!
Two major events put St. Anne’s Mead in the spotlight in 2019.
In June, we honored retiring Bishop Wendell N. Gibbs for his 20 years of extraordinary service to the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, and the community at large!
Speakers honored Bishop Gibbs with accolades and humor!
Shine on Seniors put the spotlight on the Power of Music!

ROBIN TURNS TEN!
Along with her warm demeanor, Admissions Director Robin Harris has always had a passion for working in healthcare. Graduating from Oakland University with a degree in Biology, Robin has spent her entire career in the vast and changing field of healthcare. After working as an account manager at Ascension Health and Concentra, Robin was referred to St. Anne’s by a former board member. As Robin puts it, “I wasn’t looking for St. Anne’s Mead. It found me! I was hired as the Community Relations Coordinator 10 years ago, and the rest is history!”
Joining St. Anne’s Mead during the economic slowdown was very challenging, but Robin stuck with it and played a key role in turning things around. She has been a vital part of the team whose successes include the development of robust development and marketing campaigns, refreshment of common areas and the opening of our Memory Care Home in 2018. When asked what she wants people to know about SAM, Robin said, “I want people to know that we truly care about every resident, family member and staff member who comes through our doors. We are proud of the work we do!” “From her warm welcome to her wealth of experience and genuine care, Robin secures the ‘right’ placement for aging individuals with changing needs,” said Sheila Brice, a member of SAM’s Board of Trustees and daughter of resident Margaret Rutherford.
At St. Anne’s Mead, we are happy to report that the vast majority, (84%), of all income goes directly to programming and care. 2019 marked the first full year of our new memory care home for individuals living with various types of dementia - remaining above 90% occupancy. Simultaneously, we served all of our residents and supported their families with the best care possible in both our Assisted Living and Extended - Nursing Care homes. Thanks to you, we hosted two successful fundraisers (Breakfast with the Bishop and Shine on Seniors) and brought in new gifts to support our mission. Our development efforts are supporting Mission: Possible, capital improvements for our Library and Lounges which are enjoyed by residents, family members and visitors alike, as well as our Angel Fund for residents-in-need. In 2020, you will start to see these improvements take place! As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, we value your gift and use it to ensure the highest quality care continues for our residents in years to come.
