A MESSAGE FROM MRS. BREWER
Many thanks to all the parents who took the time to give us feedback by completing the parent survey. We will be looking at the data during our School Improvement Planning Team meeting to drive some of our decisions for next year. If you are interested in joining this committee for next year, now is a great time to get started as we will begin planning for next year! Please email me if you would like to join us. Spring is flying by and it continues to be a busy time of year here at Sherwood. Please keep a close eye on the calendar events in the newsletter so you know what’s coming up each week! April 25 is “Take your child to work” day. If your student will be absent, please be sure to send a note into school. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!! Now that the weather is getting warmer mark your calendars to come enjoy ice cream for a good cause - your Sherwood Sharks! Sherwood ES's first Celebrity Scoop Night will be held at Baskin Robbins in Olney on Monday, April 22nd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Many Sherwood "celebrities" will be scooping up your favorite ice cream. MCPS ANNOUNCEMENTS:
5th Grade Challenge Events (English and
Spanish)
“Are You Up to the 5th Grade
Challenge?”
The MCPS Educational Foundation invites
you to join local dignitaries and community
leaders for a night of fun and celebration at
one of three “Are You Up to the 5th Grade
Challenge?” events in April. The events will
test local celebrity contestants on their
knowledge of the MCPS Grade 5
curriculum. Students from more than 60
MCPS elementary schools will join the
contestants. Tickets are $15.00 for MCPS
students, staff, families and friends.
Proceeds will directly support the mission of
the MCPS Educational Foundation, which
provides grants, programs, and scholarships
that improve educational opportunities for
MCPS students. The “5th Grade Challenge”
events will be held:

grado?" La Fundación para la Educación de MCPS

New MCPS Mobile-Friendly Website

MCPS Launches New Mobile-Friendly
Website
MCPS has launched a new mobile-friendly
website that allows visitors an optimal
viewing experience whether they are using a
computer, tablet, or smartphone. The site is
built using responsive web design that
adjusts the site for whatever device is being
used. Currently, the MCPS home page
(www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org) and all
of the top-level pages on the MCPS website
are in the new mobile-friendly format.
While the new website is not an “app,” an
icon may be placed on the home screen of
most devices. This may be done simply be
calling up the site and clicking “Add to
Home Screen.”

MCPS lanza nuevo sitio móvil MCPS ha lanzado un nuevo sitio de internet
móvil que permite a los visitantes una
experiencia de visualización óptima si están

utilizando un diseño de páginas de internet
sensible el cual ajusta el sitio a cualquier

What’s the BIG Idea?
The fourth episode of Superintendent Joshua
Starr’s podcast, “What’s the BIG Idea?” is
available on the MCPS website and on
iTunes. In this episode, Dr. Starr and his
cohost, Christopher Lloyd, are joined by
Randi Weingarten, President of the
American Federation of Teachers. The
discussion focused on a broad array of
education topics, including evaluations,
testing, and the role of unions in education

Summer School (English and Spanish)
Summer School Registration Is Under
Way
Registration for the 2013 high school and
elementary summer school programs has
begun. Both programs are open to all
resident Montgomery County students,
whether or not they are enrolled in MCPS.
MCPS high school students should register
through their counselor. Programs will be
offered at four locations: John F. Kennedy,
Rockville, Seneca Valley and Springbrook
high schools. The first session runs from
June 24 to July 12; the second session runs
from July 16 to August 2. The elementary
school program runs from July 9 to August 2
and will be offered at Bethesda, Fairland,
Germantown, and Rock View elementary

involvement, and also highlight the
challenges faced by ESOL students. The
