Animal Friends of the Valleys Spring 2017 Message from Animal Friends of the Valleys

Last week a young couple was visiting here at the AFV Southwest Communities Shelter in the hope that they might find a companion when they met, fell in love with, and ultimately adopted the 6-year-old dog into their loving family.

It doesn’t matter who they were or which animal it may have been because we are fortunate to see this type of thing happen every day here at AFV. But the dog may never have found a home with this loving couple without the commitment and dedication of the AFV Animal Shelter employees, volunteers and community partners that we serve.

After the adoption was complete, they were asked how everything had gone during the process. Their reply was, “The staff at the shel-ter was just excellent, helpful, and very friendly.” This successful adoption is just one of hundreds of examples of how AFV helps ani-mals every day.

Bringing together our furry friends and loving homes is one of the things that we do best but, of course, it’s by no means the only thing. From taking in homeless animals from the six communities we serve, caring for them by giving them food, water and shelter, to rescuing injured or abused animals and, especially, reuniting lost pets with their families, we effectively spend 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, saving animals.

Again, we don’t do it alone. We succeed through the collaboration and support of our rescue partners, foster families, local veterinary caregivers and, most of all, our wonderful supporters, volunteers, and sponsors. There are many ways to share with AFV how you care throughout the year, including the following: Adopt a new best friend. Our animals make great companions, but having a pet is a big responsibility because it involves a life-long commitment. Find out if you have what it takes to provide a safe and loving home and learn more about adopting from your local animal shelter. Come visit us often and get involved. Have you ever been inside an animal shelter? Take a few moments to stop by your local shelter during public hours and see first hand how things work. If you’d like to become more involved you can become a volunteer. “The staff is absolutely wonderful and greatly appreciative”; and “I absolutely love what I do,” is something we hear all the time. Keep on Giving. There is always a need financially, so every penny helps. Donating to your local shelter is as simple as writing a check and dropping it in the mail or picking up an item on the AFV wish list during your next shopping trip. Connect our Animals with your Kids. Help our communities ’ children learn about the importance of being kind to and caring for our animals. Our AFV Humane Education Program can give presentations that address your group, whether it’s an entire classroom or a single child. Be a Committed Pet Owner. Providing quality food, water and shelter is important, but it ’s not the only thing involved in being a responsible and caring pet owner. It’s also essential that your pet has current identification, license, and is properly confined or super-vised while outdoors. Keep your pet healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations by visiting a veterinarian or the low cost AFV Clinic regularly; and give your pet lots of love and attention. Always expect the unexpected. AFV, along with other shelters, are often on the front lines during natural disasters. Would you know what to do in the event of a flood, earthquake or fire? Learn how to help animals in your community, including your own pet, whether it’s a disaster, an emergency or an accident. Stay Alert. Our animal control department not only takes in homeless animals, but also rescues injured, abused or neglected critters. Assist them by helping injured animals in your neighborhood and letting us know if you suspect animal cruelty in your community. Help Spread the Word. Does the community that AFV serves fully understand and appreciate our dedication to animals? You can tell your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors about the importance of supporting AFV programs and efforts. Do Your Part. Spaying or neutering our pets is one of the most important things we can to reduce the number of homeless pets in our communities. Contact us to learn how you can find affordable spay/neuter options. As always, we look forward to supporting the communities we serve.

Animal Friends of the Valleys

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb that is a member of the mint family. It can grow to be up to three feet high.

The chemical compound in the plant that attracts and affects cats is called nep-etalactone. It is found in the leaves and stems.

Nepetalactone is a stimulant that, when sniffed by a cat, produces a "high" that is described as being similar to either marijuana or LSD. (How this was determined, I do not know.) And, the effects last for about 10 minutes before wearing off and the cat goes back to normal.

When a cat eats catnip, it acts as a sedative, but when smelled, it causes the cat to go crazy. It is thought to mimic feline pheremones and trigger those receptors.

Cats may react to the plant by rolling around, flip-ping over, and generally being hyperactive.

About 50 percent of cats seem to be affected by catnip and the behavior that results varies widely among individuals. It is believed to be an inherited sensitivity.

And, if your cat does have the sensitivity, it will not emerge until your cat is several months old; young kittens are not affected by the chemicals in the plant.

Cats may rub against and chew on catnip to bruise the leaves and stems, which then release more nepetalactone.

Catnip is safe for cats. If they eat a lot, they may vomit and have diarrhea, but will return to normal given time (and no more catnip).

It is also known to help humans; it has been used for its sedative properties in humans for centuries, having similar properties to chamomile, and is a very potent mosquito repellent

If cats are exposed to catnip frequently, they may no longer respond to it. Some people recommend that it shouldn’t be given more than once every two or three weeks to prevent habituation.

Cat Nipped! Who’s the Smartest Of Them All?

Have you ever wondered how your dog stacks up to all the others? We all like to think that our dog ranks right up there (well, at least some of us do). But who are the real Einsteins of the dog world?

Read on! 10. Australian Cattle Dog—Did you know that my breed originated as a cross between a shepherd and Australian dingo? 9. Rottweiler—My ancestors were Roman cattle herders, cart pullers, and guardians. I’m also known for my gentleness with family and friends and strength and bravery in defending them. 8. Papillon—I’m the smartest of all the toy dog breeds. I have lovely ears, too! 7. Labrador Retriever—I’ve been the most popular breed of dog in the U.S. for 23 years in a row! 6. Shetland Sheepdog—It has been shown that I can learn a command in less than five repetitions! 5. Doberman Pinscher—A German tax collector originally bred me to protect him on his rounds (well, you know what they say about tax collectors!) 4. Golden Retriever—I’m friendly and trusting and have patience with children. (Don’t tell anyone, but because of these traits, I’m not the best watchdog.) 3. German Shepherd—I was bred for protection and obe-dience which is why I am a “top dog” in law enforcement. 2. Poodle—Did you know I am originally from Germany, not France? I am loving, trainable, intelligent, and have a sense of humor. 1. Border Collie—I have been called the most intelligent of dogs. I thrive in a household where I can get lots of exercise, either with humans or other dogs. I was bred to herd and will even herd your kids and other dogs. And rocks!

Animal Friends of the Valleys Spring 2017

Dear Animal Friends...

January 3, 2017, was a very sad day. I had to put my little girl to sleep that day. I knew it was going to be very hard. I went to AFV and was just amazed at the way we were treated. They took us into this room where we could all be with our sweet little girl for awhile and say goodbye. Then they took us into the room where they were going to do the procedure. In the room were three of the sweetest girls ever: Dallas, Shelley and Keo-nah. They explained to us what was going to happen and made sure we were okay; then they started the procedure. It was so sad—lots of tears. They all said how sorry they were for our loss… As we left the room Cheryl was waiting for me and said how sorry she was and gave me a nice big hug. Then I ran into Doris, who also gave me a giant hug and said how sorry she was. As we walked out the door, (several) people were waving and say-ing how sorry they were. These people are amazing. I will never forget the love they showed me on that very sad day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Animal Friends of the Valleys. Brian Bandgren

When the sad day comes when you have to say goodbye to a beloved pet, please know that we are here for you. We will even make arrangements to come to your home if you prefer. If you are concerned that you cannot afford to pay for the procedure, please let us know and we will help you. We never want an animal to suffer due to lack of funds.

Kathy (AFV administrative supervisor), It was wonderful to meet you and your awesome staff. Every-one there was so caring and loving… Just letting you know that Charlie made the trip (to his new home in Grass Valley) with no problems. He got out like he had lived here forever. Our dogs, Frosty and Princess, accepted him fine; and, of course, Charlie had no problem with them. Charlie really, really loves the snow on the ground right now. He just ran circles around me (on the leash) and played and burrowed his nose into it, then laid down in it all spread out. You may be surprised, but Charlie actually slept in the bed with us last night! This is going to be a wonderful match! We already love Charlie tons. Louise and Frank Minor Mrs. Minor flew to southern California, then rented a car and drove Charlie back home.

Yesterday I came into the shelter with NO intention of adopting ANYTHING. And, five minutes in the door and I was cuddling this guy and taking him home. He’s AMAZING and thank you for the best late Christmas gift, ever. Tyson says, “Thank you!”, too! (Who could resist that face?!) M. Watson

My sister found her cat that had been lost since June 2015. She had had him for 12 years! I seriously thought he was gone and maybe even gotten eaten by a coyote. Something told her to check the shel-ter and when she looked (at the AFV website) she saw a cat that looked just like her Diego. We went straight to the shelter after work and, when we saw the cat, we knew it was him. By the way, the shelter did an amazing job taking care of our Diego while he was there. Crystal Sanmann

One month ago, your staff went the extra mile to help us bring home Kai Phoenix Cobblestone nee Freya. We thought we'd share a couple of pictures and let you know she has settled in and taken over. Her day begins at 4:30, when we get up. She goes outside with Dad to check the perimeter, stare at rabbits and have a little go around the fig tree. Then it's breakfast. Once Dad leaves and Mom is getting ready for work, she supervises breakfast for her two bud-dies, Blue and Pipurr, and is rewarded with a chewy treat, which she takes to her chewing chaise in the family room. Then it's time to help Mom make the bed, and settle in for her morning nap. When Dad gets home, she puts on her stylish blue sweater then goes for a walk or a trip to the Bark Park to meet her friends, Pharoah and Randy. Yesterday she had her first trip to the lake to stare at gulls and get her nose wet. After her walk, she has supper and a cookie, and at bedtime she gets a Dentastix, which she en-joys on her bed in the bedroom, while we watch the news. She whines, groans and growls to communicate, but she never barks... She understands hand signals and knows our routine so well now that she anticipates much of what we're going to do. She's got a sweet, if somewhat stubborn, temper-ament and loves to cud-dle. She's an excellent addition to our family. Thank you for all your help. Gary and Micki Lowe PS: She's been to the vet, gotten her shots, and has been deemed in good health and a happy dog!

What Would We do Without Our Rescue Group Partners?

When our staff comes to work in the mornings, they never know what they are going to find in our night drop. One morning in February they found what appeared to be a pink Dalmatian, along with a boxer friend. As it turns out, the Dalmatian was really a 10-month-old boxer with a terrible case of demodectic mange. Her 2-year-old boxer friend also had the disease. Staff named them Asia and Artie.

Monica Alexander, AFV rescue coordi-nator, immediately got to work finding a rescue group who could give the dogs the care and medical treatment they need-ed. Last Chance at Life (LCAL) from Oceanside an-

swered the call. They specialize in boxers and have access to excellent veterinary care. As soon as the dogs’ five day stray hold was up, one of their volunteers came to the shelter to pick them up. They are responding to treatment and have already found loving new homes. Oh, and People Magazine heard about the dogs and did a story about them! LCAL has also been instrumental in saving other animals at the shelter, including birds. Yes, large parrots have actually been left in our night drop! Speaking of birds, we recently had two parakeets and two cockatiels left in our night drop with a note stating that their former guardian had died. One of the cockatiels appeared ill and was placed in quarantine. (The others have since been adopted.) With the help of The Beak Squad of Menifee and Little Red Bird Sanctuary, we were able to locate a rescue to take the bird (now named Meeko). Avian Underdogs Rescue Association in Lake Forest stepped right up and picked up Meeko the same day we contacted them. He is under the care of a veterinarian and word from the rescue is that he is responding nicely to the love and care he is receiving. We are so grateful to our many rescue partners. We are in contact with them on a daily basis, and they help when the shelter is full and also when we get animals that are not highly adoptable to the public due to age, medical issues, or behav-ioral concerns. Rescues regularly take animals out of the shel-ter that are in need of further help and attention.

Can I Crash on Your Couch For Awhile?

Spring is here and we are bracing for the onslaught of unwanted litters that will inevitably arrive at the shelter. It’s a tough time, not only for the animals, but for our staff who must try to make room for them. That’s where you come in. If you have ever thought of fostering an animal, now is the time. If you don’t want to commit to fostering a litter, we have animals of all ages and sizes that need tempo-rary homes until they find their forever families. Fostering helps the animals in other ways, too. It gives us a chance to find out more about an animal’s person-ality which, in turn, helps potential adopters learn more about the animals so they can determine if he or she will be a good match for them. It also frees up space in the shelter. AFV will provide you with food and other supplies. All you need to do is commit to bringing your fostered ani-mal to our Saturday adoption shows at the Temecula Petco. (Litters often are taken to the shelter once they are old enough to be adopted.) Our foster coordinator will stay in touch with you and keep you updated on when to bring them for vaccinations and spay/neuter (if necessary). For more information, please contact our foster coordi-nator at 951-674-0618 ext. 216 or email [email protected].

Have You

Heard?

We were so blessed recently when, through a generous grant, Blue Buffalo delivered 19,000 pounds of dog and cat food and treats to the shelter. Some of our staff unloaded the large trailer with the help of Noel from Quality Foam Packaging. No need to go to the gym on this day!

A big thank you to Blue Buffalo for this much-welcome gift!

Huey’s Heroes Participants of all ages are invited to join us every Wednesday, 3-4:30 p.m., to read to the shelter animals. Readers can earn credit toward Barnes & Noble gift cards as well as other prizes. They also might receive a free Huey’s Heroes Reading Pro-gram t-shirt (kids sizes only) when they bring in a food or litter donation for the animals. (Please take into the regis-

tration classroom on your right upon entry to the shelter.) We hope you consider joining us every week. Readers can improve their skills while making a posi-tive difference in the life of a shelter animal. They love the attention!

An Extra Special Adoption Every adoption is special, but sometimes they go even be-yond that. One of those involves a little Chihuahua named Wasabi, fostered by our good friends at Lucky Chi Dog Res-cue and brought to several of our adoption shows at the Temecula Petco. At first Wasabi was a bit grumpy, especially with young children. As time when by, though, she became calmer and began enjoying herself. But that special connection with a family just didn’t seem to happen until, that is, she met up with a new family looking for a companion after losing their precious Hannah. Wasabi’s new “dad” sent the following update to Lucky Chi about the new addition: “Wasabi is doing wonderful here; she rules our room quiet-ly but firmly! She is a great joy to me; she makes me laugh all the time which is something I haven’t done in a long time. But, most importantly, she loves to sit with me and be petted, lie on the bed where she can watch me, and follows me everywhere. I firmly believe that God and Hannah, my girl I just lost, were guiding me to Wasabi. They always knew what I needed! She as quickly captured my heart and is filling the crater left there by Hannah’s passing. Thank you for all of your help in making it possible for me to bring her home! PS: She loves to sleep under the covers and snuggle with me at night.”

YOUR SUPPORT CAN CONTINUE TO HELP THE ANIMALS

Over the years AFV has been named in several trusts. Those generous trusts have given AFV the opportunity to offer spay/

neuter grants, microchip grants, start-up costs for the spay/neuter clinic, and help the public with medical expenses for their

pets. By including AFV as a beneficiary in your estate, your kindness will live on through the many pets we are able to care

for from your bequest.

If you want to ensure that your love of animals continues in the future, we encourage you to include Animal Friends of the

Valleys in your estate plans. This is one of the easiest, most meaningful ways to perpetuate your support of the thousands

of dogs and cats we save each year. If you have already named AFV in your will, please let us know so that we may thank

you, acknowledge you, and welcome you.

Still Need to Spay or Neuter Your Pet? We’ve got you covered. Our low cost spay and neuter clinic is just a phone call away. Do your part to help stop the pet overpopulation crisis! Your animal will be happier and healthier; most importantly, he or she will not contribute more litters to a world that does not have homes for them. Call for an appointment today: 951-674-SPAY (7729)

For more information, log on to our website: http://animalfriendsofthevalleys.com/spay-neuter/ . Need vaccinations? Our clinic is open Monday—Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (no appointment necessary). For more infor-mation, log on to our website: http://animalfriendsofthevalleys.com/services-licensing/.

An update on Mr. Oso—I think he is pretty happy. He loves “his kids”!

We adopted our JearBear from you a year ago. He was 5 years old, 20 lbs. over-weight, and super high strung. Not sure what his life was like before being at your shelter. He still has some anxiety issues but overall he is doing great. Thank you for doing what you can to help animals in need.

From Our Facebook Page...

Just adopted Jasper and he is a great addi-tion to our family. Love him!

A big thanks to Kahoots for all these great donations for the shelter animals in honor of Ani-mal Shelter Appreciation Month. Pictured is General Man-ager Jimmy getting ready to bring the

first load of donations. And guess what—they brought even more donations the following week! Thanks to everybody who donated!

We had a wonderful surprise one recent day when CARMAX employees showed up with several car-loads and about $2000 in animal food and sup-plies for the shelter. Employees and management from the new CAR-MAX location in Murrieta volunteered time, effort and money for several projects at the shelter and conducted a food and donation drive at their em-ployee BBQ where the load of goodies was collected.

This bunch of cuties is from Girl Scout Troop #127 in Murrieta. They made and donated dozens of toys for the shelter animals. They even donated cozy blankets! They also had a blast learning about dog bite prevention and pet responsibility. Thanks, Scouts!

What did Colten want for his 7th birthday? Why, dona-tions for AFV, of course! Look at all these great gifts for the dogs and cats. Way to go, Colten! Thank you for being so selfless and for thinking of the shel-ter animals. You’re AWEsome!

These are just two of the stu-dents from Temecula Mid-dle School who donated a truckload of items to the shelter. There

were a total of 1,085 items! Thank you for thinking of the shelter. WOW, that’s amazing!

An extra special big thanks to Anastasia Wiley from Warner Springs for the very generous cash donation she made to the shelter. We love our support-ers and thank them for always being there for the animals!

A huge thanks to Local Car Scene for donating 1700 lbs. of food for the shelter animals during their recent car show at the Temecula Petco! Pictured is member Justin Constant with a friend. It is support from people and organizations that make the work of AFV programs possible. Thanks to all our community partners for their support!

Congratulations to Our Volunteers of the Quarter!

We have some really great volunteers at AFV and we couldn’t do what we do without them! Omar Garcia, left, is 16 years old and, when he’s not volun-teering, enjoys cars and dirt bikes. Haylen Montrone, right, is 15 years old and is in the march-ing band at his school. He plays the brass trumpet/trombone. Pat J. Montrone, center, is semiretired and enjoys fishing with his grandkids. He writes, “I don’t usually take the time out to write a letter about my experiences unless they were bad ones, but today I have to take a moment out to share my volunteer experience at AFV. On the first day I arrived, I was immediately impressed by how neat, organized and clean the facility looked. My first

contact was with Sharyl (Nowicki, AFV volunteer coordinator). She greeted me with a handshake and a nice smile, and I immediately knew this was going to be a great place to volunteer. She asked me what tasks I was comfortable with and matched me up with the cleaning aids and sent me on my way. Every once in awhile she would stop by to see how I was doing and if I needed anything. During the week I had the opportunity to meet many of the staff members. Everyone was friendly, kind, and had a caring attitude for the animals and each other. Each one had a passion for what they did on a daily basis. They integrated between departments like a seamless team of seasoned professionals. I was not only proud to help them but was honored to be accepted and respected as an AFV volunteer. Sharyl and her counterpart Richard were such wonderful people to work with. Thank you all so much for the services you give to the community, the kindness you show to the people, the love you extend to the animals and the great experience you gave to me.”

If you would like to volunteer at the shelter, please attend one of our volunteer orientation meetings the first and third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. We have many volunteer opportunities, some at the shelter and others at events and off site adoption shows. Learn more and download a volunteer application on our website: http://animalfriendsofthevalleys.com/public-services/.

Bunnies are not toys. They are not for Easter, either. Did you know that 95 percent of “Easter Bunnies” don’t make it to age 1? Shelters become inundat-ed with bunnies after Easter when the excitement ends and the kids lose interest. Please stop, think, and buy a chocolate bunny instead.

Thanks from the Animals. . . Without the help of our many supporters we would not be able to continue helping the animals in need. Thanks to these and all the other friends who contributed to AFV the fourth quarter of 2016.
