The Northland Plan is a community driven small area planning effortsponsored by the City of Tulsa. The Northland Plan is the firstexample of a town center as proposed by the PlaniTulsaComprehensive Plan adopted in 2010. The city has allocated$75,000 for further development and implementation of the plan.

Supported by a $3,200 grant, the Northeastern State UniversityCampus Plan is a comprehensive urban design vision for the seventhousand student campus. Students worked closely with a variety ofuniversity interests including administration, faculty, staff andstudents, as well as representatives from the City of Tahlequah andthe Cherokee Nation.

Completed in 2005, the Tracy Park + Gunboat Park NeighborhoodPlans contain initiatives to reinforce the neighborhood cores, investin a safer future, welcome new neighbors and create an urbanidentity. Urban Design Students worked closely for eight monthswith residents, business owners and city officials to craft recom-mendations for the neighborhoods’ future.

Part of the Town of Skiatook’s Comprehensive Plan effort, this studychallenged residents, business owners and town leaders to envisionfuture uses and improvements to an aging downtown. Studentsworked closely with the participants by conducting research,producing sketches and building a detailed scale model of the town.The town provided a $1,700 grant to support the project.

A thought experiment challenging students to imagine the citywithout the ubiquitous automobile. Students created a history oftransportation of Tulsa, quantified automobile use and developedcarfree zones and alternative transportation systems illustrated withprovocative before and after visualizations.

This innovative research project supported in part by a $386, 000HUD Community Outreach Partnership Center grant engaged over150 participants in an interactive planning game to examine the bestways to incorporate new commercial development along arterialstreets abutting historic residential neighborhoods in Midtown Tulsa.Public Service Company of Oklahoma printed over 100 copies of thestudy for distribution to residents and community leaders.

A collaboration between two classes, this project creates an urbandesign framework for the revitalization of Downtown Tulsa. Majorproposals include a new arena and convention center surrounding amajor park and a new civic center. Urban Design Studio graduatestudents and Norman undergraduates from Dr. Khosrow Bozorgi’shigh-rise design studio created a laser cut illuminated model of 96blocks to illustrate the design.

Poetics

Architecture is the play of light and shadow.Architecture is the color and texture of materials.Architecture is the mass and volume of form.Architecture is the tension and compression of space.

Nature

Harmonize the man-made environment with the natural environment.Minimize impacts on the land. Reduce energy consumption throughgood design. Select materials and systems that are sustainable.Resist automobile oriented design.

Rationalism

There is a place for critical reasoning in the design process, a workingmethod of devising and testing multiple concepts leading to options, notjust solutions. Analysis and research add depth and breadth to the conceptsexplored. Evaluate options in an open exchange of ideas between all parties.

Urbanism

What we build are not isolated objects. The lives of people are not segregatedby use or function. What endures evolves over long periods of time. We donot control all factors that govern our work. This is urbanism.

This conceptual study done looks at the redevelopment of downtownTulsa’s East Village into an urban district connecting Greenwoodwith Central Park and the Business Core. A wide boulevard withmedian promenade extends Greenwood Avenue from Oneok Field toa roundabout at 6th Street.

This ongoing research project explores the possibilities of construct-ing complex, three-dimensional geometric shapes using cross-sectional model building techniques made possible by CAD solidmodels and laser cutting equipment.

This competition presented the challenge of imagining a large andmodern biotechnology laboratory adjacent to a traditional estate.Landscape and topography is used to reduce the apparent scaleand impact of the design. A living wall concept incorporates sustain-able design and indoor air quality principles into an entry ranked inthe 11 - 19 range of 302 entries.

Wedged into 15’ deep by 120’ long parcels of land left over from theredevelopment of the central freeway into Octavia Boulevard, thispair of buildings contain eight vertical living units designed tocomplement the architecture and streetscape of the historic HaysValley neighborhood of San Francisco. This participatory community health research study asked 53community residents to photograph and speak about their builtenvironments. A transdisciplinary research team with faculty fromthe School of Community Medicine, Social Work, the OU-TulsaLibrary and TACSI collected and coded the resulting data performingcontent analysis for environmental and behavioral health indicators.

The keystone to Texas Christian University’s housing modernizationand diversification program, Tom Brown / Pete Wright is an enclavefor upper classmen that required the redevelopment of five acres inthe heart of the main campus. Respect for the existing campusscale and context was the paramount design criteria.

Each residence suite fits into a module plan that allows for a varietyof linked arrangements with opportunities for carriageways, towersand common spaces. Providing amenities often found only in off-campus apartments, suites include living rooms, full kitchens,private bedrooms, laundry facilities and individual entries.

Constructed in the heart of campus with students living within 100feet of the site, the project was carefully phased and staged tominimize disruption. Completed in the fall of 1999, Tom Brown /Pete Wright’s 322 beds are among the finest university housing inthe nation.

Completed in 2000, the renovation of the Worth Hills Campusincludes the rehabilitation of seven residence halls housing interna-tional students and Greek organizations. Phased over three years,the updating of 922 beds occurred without taking any beds out ofservice during the normal academic calendar.

This idea competition focused on revitalizing New York’s HudsonRiver Waterfront. The entry proposes rehabiltating two abandonedpiers as a Buddhist Monastery with ceremonial grounds that are anextension of a waterfront park and esplanade.

The second place entry for the Glenwood Village Hall Competitioncombines the design of the village hall with a new town plan for thisbedroom community southwest of Chicago. Emphasis is placed onMain Street while maintaining the small scale charm of the village.

The first implementation of the recently amended Texas Techcampus plan, Carpenter Welles Housing is both an intimate enclavefor residences and an important extension of the public space of thecampus located at the termination of a proposed pedestrian mall.

The site for the 200,000 sf replacement bed building straddles anarrow, prominent ridge that dominates the Arkansas River Valleyand the City of Muskogee. In addition to accommodating the steepslope, the building had to be integrated with the existing, multiplestructures of the hospital.

Completed in 1998, the eight story expansion replaces thehospital’s original 80 beds built in 1927 with 144 new beds intriangular wards, including intensive and surgical care. It alsohouses many medical departments, including cardiology,pulmonology, nuclear medicine, emergency care, rehabilitativemedicine and administration.

The replacement bed building’s nursing units are designed to allowthe nursing staff to provide outstanding care with the fewest steps.Lighting, signs and interior finishes have been carefully coordinatedfor wayfinding and orientation. Patient rooms have large windowsproviding sweeping views of the Oklahoma landscape.
