distributed computing from mainframes to client-server models
and back to centralized cloud approaches. The next development
will include the distribution of intelligence back to the topological
edge of the network, including functionalities on nebulous
systems within the Internet of Things (IoT).

Open Baton Release 5 is available!
The Open Baton team is very happy to announce anew major release of the Open Baton framework.Release 5 represents the maturity of the Open Batonproject. Simplified installation and configuration,including a new set of Docker compose files whichcan be used to start immediately different kind ofsetups, as well as enhanced usability, through thedashboard and the openbaton-cli. Several bug fixesas well as security enhancements have been addedto this release. In particular, each plugin and externalcomponent connects to its own message queue, sothat the communication between the NFVO andthose components is completely isolated andsecured. Last but not least, the project provides nowsupport for OpenStack Pike, Amazon EC2 andDocker containers. #Berlin5GWeek: “Edge Intelligence” ─Decentral networks for the Internet of Things The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)has brought out the White Paper “Edge Intelligence”(EI) in cooperation with Fraunhofer FOKUS andindustrial partners. “Edge Intelligence” exploits theadvancements in hardware, software and networkingfor taking decisions faster and cost-attractive to thebenefit of multiple industries. Most applications in the areas like Industry 4.0,Virtual Reality and Smart Cities are data intensive ortime sensitive and depend on a lot of data fromsensors and devices being processed almost in realtime. Furthermore, depending on the application,information must be extracted from the data andtransmitted securely. This is possible through “EdgeIntelligence”, a combination of Edge Computing,sophisticated Application Function and NetworkInfrastructure management powered by MachineLearning. “Edge Intelligence” uses the evermoreefficient devices and sensors on site for storage andanalysis of the data. Having solutions coupled withthe new 5G network infrastructure, which providesthe right software-based network for eachapplication, in future, a central cloud will be obsoletefor verticals with the need for robust and securecommunication and low latency. OPNFV Orchestra Euphrates Release
Open Baton integrates out of the box with theOPNFV framework. With the Euphrates releaseOPNFV users can install the complete NFV stackincluding the MANO and NFVI layers based on OpenBaton and OpenStack. “With Euphrates, OPNFV makes an additionalimportant step towards a more comprehensivereference platform for accelerating the adoption ofNFV and SDN technologies,” said Giuseppe Carella,Open Baton and OPNFV Orchestra project technicallead. “We are proud of having introduced the firstOPNFV scenario integrating a full MANO stackprovided by the Open Baton project, leveraging theJOID installer. Moreover, functest has beenextended for validating such integration using vIMSVNF packages available on the Open Batonmarketplace.”

The Next Generation Internet, a key priority in H2020ICT work programme 2018-2020 with the first NGI funding available from the Commission early in2018. Recently Prof. T. Magadanz was nominatedby the bmbf as German National contact point forNGI; having such a mandate the NGNI starts tocollect opinions on the German National priorities fortopics in the field of NGI.
