startups stand out

Through its global research, the World Bank estimates that small and medium businesses comprise around 95% of existing businesses around the world and provide jobs to approximately 60% of private-sector workers. SMEs are also believed to be behind roughly 50% of world gross value added (GVA). In addition to being a source of significant economic prosperity, SMEs are also a source of great innovation and job creation. And, because they’re small, they are much more flexible than large firms. So they might be smaller but they’re certainly “big business.”

There’s so much to be gained from an entrepreneurial standpoint. And it is also very globally “in trend” now especially among the younger generations to be your own boss and share your creativity through your own little organization. By becoming an entrepreneur you can gain freedom (and money of course) by doing what you love and when you do what you love you can do a great job. You can make an impact on the world and build a legacy! Aren’t you inspired to start up a little business of your own if you haven’t done so already?

Small is beautiful. And one relevant concept these days is small and medium enterprises (SMEs). They are now pretty important all over the world.

Nothing stands still and neither should entrepreneurs if they want to survive. So once an SME or entrepreneurial venture is established, the owner has to figure out a way to differentiate from others and remain in customers’ minds to stay in the game. Others have done it and so can you! The possibilities are limitless. In this day and age of online shopping, SME business owners are reinventing all or part of their businesses and essentially being reborn. But it doesn’t stop there. Customers are now drawn into a business or shop by the look and feel of it and the look of everything associated with it.

You can get ahead in this respect by strategically using aesthetics, colors, images, fonts and other elements not just in your shop design but also your product and service design. That’s just what many small business owners are doing these days. Entrepreneurs have taken visual design to all new highs by using design to enhance their businesses, create brand identities as well as build trust and interest. Small businesses can make their mark through things like graphic tools, exterior design, interior design, atmosphere design or through the design of their products and services and more!

There are so many neat and crafty shops and loads of amazing new startups just waiting to be discovered. And I just love checking out these stores to see what the owner has come up with. There’s a lot to be learned from them on how to make your business successful and build a memorable brand. Many of these successful small shops are very particular about their visual design giving great importance to their interior and exterior as well as their logos, leaflets, packaging and even their shop cards. Once inside a little shop that you visit you’ll also want to take note of the space design and charming features of the shop. By unlocking the potential of visual design, these entrepreneurs give their businesses personality and communicate their vision. When inside a startup like this where so much attention is given to even the smallest detail, it’s hard not to be inspired!

All the books you see in this feature are only a couple examples of our large collection on design ideas. I know you’ll find these books extremely helpful whether you’re tempted to start your own business now, need to revamp your existing one to survive or are stumped for new ideas to make your venture even more appealing than before.

Looking forward to seeing you at Asia Books and to enjoying the great things you come up with!

The book showcases coffee shops located in historic buildings, modern architecture, an art museum, an arcade, a courtyard, a former loading dock and even a reclaimed cargo shipping container, located in cities across the United States, including Ann Arbor, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle - but the common thread is an appreciation for great coffee in spaces that invite human interaction and create memories through good design. 9780857055323THE GiRL iN THE spiDER's WEBBy DAVID LAGERCRANTZPaperback

Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist have not been in touch for some time. Then Blomkvist is contacted by renowned Swedish scientist Professor Balder. Warned that his life is in danger, but more concerned for his son's well-being, Balder wants Millennium to publish his story - and it is a terrifying one. More interesting to Blomkvist than Balder's world-leading advances in Artificial Intelligence, is his connection with a certain female superhacker. It seems that Salander, like Balder, is a target of ruthless cyber gangsters - and a violent criminal conspiracy that will very soon bring terror to the snowbound streets of Stockholm, to the Millennium team, and to Blomkvist and Salander themselves.

9781847923202pEAk: sEcRETs FROM THE NEW sciENcE OF EXpERTisEBy ANDERS ERICSSONTrade Paperback

Professor Anders Ericsson's research into why ordinary people achieve the extraordinary inspired the popular theory that 10,000 hours of practice will allow an individual to excel in any field. In this book, he describes how particular extended practice leads to exceptional performance. Anders Ericsson began his expertise research when he conducted a memory trial on a young man who, after several hundred sessions, was displaying memory powers over 10 times that of an average person as a result of Ericsson's ‘deliberate practice’ training system. Professor Ericsson has had his research widely cited worldwide and has worked with major international organizations.

Through her own story, visits with in-dividuals like teachers working in some of the toughest schools and cadets struggling through their first days at West Point as well as fascinating insights from history and interviews with dozens of high achievers like JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon and Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll, University of Penn-sylvania professor Duckworth shows readers what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference.

9780141363936THE TRiALs OF ApOLLO 01: THE HiDDEN ORAcLEBy RICK RIORDANTrade Paperback

How do you punish an immortal? By making him human. After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus's favour. But Apollo has many enemies - gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

9780141345949THE 5TH WAVE 03: THE LAsT sTARBy RICK YANCEYPaperback

The enemy is Other. The enemy is us. They're down here, they're up there, they're nowhere. They want the Earth, they want us to have it. They came to wipe us out, they came to save us. But beneath these riddles lies one truth: Cassie has been betrayed. So has Ringer. Zombie. Nugget. And all 7.5 billion people who used to live on our planet. Betrayed first by the Others, and now by ourselves. In these last days, Earth's remaining survivors will need to decide what's more important: saving themselves . . . or saving what makes us human.
