SHAPers are also encouraged to interact with the Exec committee, and start a conversation about the future cultural development of Southampton. You can respond to this by emailing Steve Hill (the person at the City Council who sends round the newsletter), and in future we will set up a Facebook page so that conversations about developments can include the active participation of everyone. 11) Poetry update from Apples and Snakes Message from Pete Hunter:

Hello all,

Well, I’ve just got my breath back from the amazing Shake the Dust South East regional final, a real rollercoaster of a day full of excited and keen young poets, crowned by a thrilling and

emotional slam final. Congratulations to Samuel Cody Specialist Sports School from

Farnborough and their poet coaches Michael James Parker and Louise Halvardsson for being the highest scoring team!

They now go forward to represent the South East at the National Slam Final in London on

Saturday 7 July, which is part of the National Shake the Dust Weekend! See details for all the events happening at Southbank Centre, London, including that all-important slam final!

Everyone who took part was a winner and my thanks goes out to the poets who coached and shadowed so brilliantly, managing to get the best out of their students and demonstrably changing

their lives. As Dizraeli (the special feature guest, along with World Beatbox Champ, Bellatrix) said: "this is a very exciting time to be involved with spoken word and performance poetry" and the future, if these young poets are anything to go by, is looking even brighter.

But it’s not just the youngsters who shone in June, there was a full open mic at 451 on the 18th,

and it was great to see several first-timers taking to the stage and special guests Sally

Jenkinson and A F Harrold bringing pause for thought and cause for hilarity.

Events to look forward to this month are Slam Dickens on Thursday 12 July in Portsmouth where you can win the complete works of Charles Dickens by performing as one of his characters or in

the style of Dickens (see below for details), and then Big Talk returns to The Tom Thumb Theatre in Margate on Friday 27 July where there will be open mic, poetry films and top guests,

all hosted by Rickasaurus. And, since it's festival season, we're also getting behind Slam on the Farm, the spoken word festivites on the Playhouse Stage at Lounge on the Farm in Canterbury 6 - 8 July. Phew!

As the Archaeological Atlas of the 2 Seas (A2S) project draws to a close at the end of a 3½ year project, so the A2S Geoportal comes on line. The aim of the project was to map underwater archaeological sites in the shared seas of England, France and Belgium and one of the key outputs is a collaborative database accessed through the A2S Geoportal which can function as a research tool for academics, archaeologists, historians and other heritage professionals and is available to anyone with access to the internet that has an interest in marine archaeology and heritage, or just a fascination with historic wrecks. The Archaeological Atlas of the 2 Seas (A2S) has emerged from a desire to bring together knowledge, skills and common maritime areas to enhance understanding of our cross-border maritime archaeological heritage. The three partner countries, England (Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology), France (Association for the Development of Research in Maritime Archaeology) and Belgium (Onroerend Erfgoed) share a rich submerged maritime heritage that can facilitate collaboration and cross-cultural links. From 2009-2012, A2S partners researched over 150 submerged archaeological sites, collecting data from primary literary sources and national archives. The results have steered a programme of field investigation to explore almost 100,000 years of our collective submerged cultural heritage from prehistoric landscapes to present day shipwrecks. Accessing the Geoportal The Geoportal has been created by developers from the GeoData Institute at the University of Southampton and the website can be accessed easily by anyone who has interacted with a Google-maps style web interface with simple tools for searching the database, exploring wreck records and viewing images and other detailed information, it has multiple language support built in (English, French and Flemish). The A2S Geoportal can be found at www.a2s-geoportal.eu containing over 1,573 archaeological sites covering the English Channel and Southern North Sea, over 3,000 underwater artefact and historical photos, high resolution background bathymetry, ancient charts and aerial photographs, and open standards and technologies. It will automatically connect to the three-partner databases once a day to find updated and additional wreck records and associated information.

For Christmas 2012, The National Trust at Mottisfont wishes to commission a number of ‘Stars’ to form a ‘trail’ within the grounds. Artists and makers are invited to submit proposals to create or exhibit a ‘Star’ for temporary installation at Mottisfont from 1st December 2012 to 27th January 2013. This builds on the success of the ‘Angel Garden’ (Dec 2011 – Jan 2012), when 15,000 visitors enjoyed 8 sculptures on the theme of ‘Angels’ installed at various sites around the grounds at Mottisfont. This is an opportunity for the selected artists/makers to produce a piece of work in response to a unique rural location with the potential for their work to be seen by a large audience. The selectors will also consider existing pieces of work for exhibition.

The ‘Star’ should ideally be a three-dimensional object, created from materials that are durable enough to survive a two-month long installation outdoors in winter.

The ‘Star’ will need to be manufactured and delivered for installation no later than Friday, 16 November 2012.

Full details can be downloaded at:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont/things-to-see-and-do/events/page-1/

If you would like any visual materials or disks to be returned, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope covering the cost of return postage. Please send your proposals to:
