Even if you don’t know how to write or type Chinese characters yourself, make sure you download a Chinese character language keyboard for your phone.

It’s really important that your phone can at least receive and display Chinese characters.

For Android users, try Google’s own pinyin keyboard:

CHINESE KEYBOARD

Where would our students be without a trusty dictionary to take around with them everywhere during their time studying in China? For the best (and free) dictionary, look no further than Pleco.

Packed with thousands of words and sample sentences, alongside a tool to handwrite and recognize Chinese characters, Pleco really is an amazing tool for learning Chinese.

The main dictionary is great and free, but you can pay for extra add-ons. One Pleco add-on that allows you to take a photo of Chinese characters and it will translate them for you.

BAIDU MAPS (百度地图)

Shanghai is a huge city – you can’t understand just how big it is until you come here and see for yourself. To stop you getting lost, you need to download a map you can trust!

As Google often has limited service in China due to the ‘Great Firewall’, don’t rely on using Google Maps to get around. So what’s the alternative?

To find out where you are going, China’s own Baidu Maps is the best map you can use in China. The only problem is that you will have to use Chinese characters or pinyin to really get the most out of it.

WECHAT (微信)

Android:

iOS:

WeChat is the Chinese equivalent of WhatsApp (and actually better, some would say), and it is hugely popular in China.

If you want to stay in contact with friends (both Chinese and non-Chinese), then WeChat is an app you must download.

QQ MESSENGER

QQ is the Chinese equivalent of MSN, and is a great way to communicate with people online. Although the recent popularity of WeChat led has many people to stop using QQ, it’s still definitely worth downloading.

Many university groups and societies will use QQ to organize their activities, and it’s a very useful way to stay in contact.

There are two versions of QQ. One is the Chinese version, and the other is the English version (QQ International). The following links are for QQ International:

DIAN PING (点评)

It’s no secret that Chinese people are huge food fans, and many call themselves 吃或 (chī huò) which roughly translates as “foodie”.

So it’s no surprise that Chinese foodies have plenty of food apps to help them find the tastiest places to eat.

If you want to find the best places to eat in Shang-hai, then you definitely need to download Dian Ping!
