Joining a long list of Shamrock Club members named as Irish Fest Volunteer of the Year, Past President Julie Smith is the 2013 recipient of the Irish Fest Volunteer of the Year award. Julie began volunteer- ing at the first festival in 1981. Her first assignment was selling tickets at the main gate. Julie's husband, Tom Smith, had been recruited by one of his managers at work to help drive entertainers, and they knew Julie would want to be there to help. After two years, Mary Otto recruited her to work as a spotter. This meant walking around the grounds and watching food and beverage vendors give customers correct change and the right orders. After doing this for a few years, Julie was called to duty in the transportation area. In the early 1990’s she was elected to the Irish Fest Board of Directors, and served for 11 years. While becoming more involved with the festival activities, she was a member of her parish council, a scout leader, and a board member of the Southside Organizing Committee, and a member of the Trinity Booster Club. Julie is one of the founding members of the Milwaukee Feis Society, and remains as the Vice President. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Emerald Society, and was recently named as a Trustee. The Emerald Society’s annual fundraiser was chaired by the Smiths, and has donated over $100,000 to Milwaukee Children’s Hospital Foundation for the Brendan Heart Fund. As the Area Supervisor of Services for Irish Fest, she has the following duties to supervise: Celtic Canines, Paddy and Molly McFest, Information Booths, Package Check, Make-a Wish, Wheelchairs and Strollers, the Lost Children’s Area, and the tickets and the raffle. Have you seen the Hallamor lately? Atlast month’s general meeting Tim O'Briengraciously highlighted some excitingnews about the renovation of the ICHC.The replastering and painting of theceiling of the Hallamor and yes, soon tobe new carpeting, is breathtaking. Withthe help of our donations and others, seeing these improvements become areality is beyond words.

Milwaukee Home toNew Folk Band.................................

ABig Thing for HickoryvilleIn 1975, Billboard announced that the

folk boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s wasover. However, in 2013, folk music isstill alive and well. With folk revivalbands like Mumford and Sons and TheLumineers leading the way in America asa new folk revival begins.

In the spring of 2013, Rory Modlinski,a Milwaukee native, decided to bringtraditional folk back to Milwaukee. Witha guitar and banjo in hand, Modlinskileads A Big Thing for Hickoryville. Thesupport players will change throughoutthe course of its run. “The idea is thatwhen you come and see A Big Thing forHickoryville, you have a new experienceeach time,” says Modlinski. Bouzoukiplayer, Christopher Chan from Milwaukeebased Blackthorn Folly, joined Rory forthe debut show at Paddy’s Pub inMilwaukee. They performed Americanfolk music from the folk revival of the50’s and 60’s. Songs from The KingstonTrio and John Prine were among thecountless songs the duo performed.

Rory Modlinski“American folk music never left the

popular conscious,” says Modlinski, “Itjust was not on mainstream radio.Mumford and Sons is a British folk groupthat ‘invaded’ America singing originalsongs deeply rooted in American folkmusic. When The Beatles came toAmerica,America did not realize that the music thatthey were listening to was based off of theDelta blues legends Muddy Waters andSon House among many other legendaryAmerican folk musicians. “My intent is tobring America, traditional music alongwith Irish music of which I grew up on.”

Word of the Month..................................Sú Oráiste - Orange Juice (Sue Or-esh- tah)Ba mhaith liom sú oráiste a ól. (Ba weylum su or esh-tah)I want an orange juice.

Modlinski grew up at the feet of suchIrish music legends as Tommy Makemand Liam Clancy. From an early age, herealized that he want to carry on the tradi-tional ballads from Ireland. Later, in histeenage years, he added Appalachian andBluegrass to his repertoire to preserve forfuture generations. Modlinski is heavilyinfluenced by the late old-timey playerDoc Watson. With the combination ofMakem, Watson, a little Pete Seeger, andadding a little Neil Young, Bob Dylan, andJack White, Modlinski gives a unique lookinto American folk music. He brings thisunique look into the repertoire for A BigThing for Hickoryville.

A Big Thing for Hickoryville will beplaying at Milwaukee Irish Fest onSunday, August 18th on the MilwaukeePub Garden Stage at 11:30am, just afterthe Mass for Peace and Justice. TheMilwaukee Pub Garden Stage is locatedjust inside of the South Gate off of HarborDrive.

For more information on A Big Thingfor Hickoryville, please “like” the page onFacebook for updates on other shows. Alink for a website will be available on theFacebook page, in the near future.

Trish and Bree Johnson have nowreturned from Boston. They enjoyed eachminute of the trip, and the hospitality ofthe Boston community. After their arrival, they were invited to spend their visit withMichael and Noreen Smith. The Smithsare well known teachers in the Irish danceworld, and always step forward to helpwhere needed. They were told to use theSmiths’ car if they would like to do sometourist activities. The Johnsons were ableto see some of the historic areas, but thefocus was always on the quilts.

The Clifden Academy of Boston, whereJane was a student, hosted the Johnsons, and new friendships were formed. TheBoston Bruins Hockey team had even senta hockey jersey for the project. Thewooden chest containing the variousdonated items, and the beautiful paintedimages will also be given to Jane.

Bree was invited to dance with Clifdenstudents, and some of their dancersentertained Bree and Trish with their owndances. The Clifden teacher willdetermine when the time is right to bringthe quilts, wooden chest, and othermemorability.

The women in Boston that worked onthis project, were as happy as the Johnsonsto see this project through, and a TV station interviewed all involved. There are photosand more commentary on the Facebook page of their visit. Never one to rest onprevious accomplishments, they are now selling T-Shirts on this page. They areavailable to the public, and that money will go to the family too.

It’s always wonderful to see what can be accomplished by concerned and generousmembers of the Irish community.
