"Bhoomi" seems to be a rehash of a C-grade potboiler of the early1970s. It is a degenerated rape and revenge drama replete with blaseexpositions and gory action sequences. Set in a middle-class milieuin Agra, it is the story of a gang rape survivor, Bhoomi (Aditi RaoHydari). She is the independent daughter of a shoemaker Arun Sachdev(Sanjay Dutt). Apar t from being a professional make-up and mehendiar tist, she is a wedding planner. She is in love with Doctor Neeraj(Sidhant Gupta) and is all set to get married to him.A family friend, the timid Vikas (Puru Chibber), who has a sweetmeatshop in the neighbourhood, is her silent lover. After being spurnedearlier, he approaches the local goon Dhauli (Sharad Kelkar) whoalong with his crony Gulab (Veer Aryan), advises him to rapeBhoomi a day before her marriage. How the father and daughtertake revenge, forms the crux of this tale.Apar t from the ace production qualities that the film boasts of, thewr i t i ng , c red i t ed to co-p roducer Sandeep S ingh and Raa jShaandilyaa is the weakest. Casual, dramatic and over tly forced, the script is lazily crafted. The plot is laden with formulaic tropesof an oft-seen revenge drama with one-dimensional, stereotypi-cal characters and cliched dialogues. Sanjay Dutt does not failhis audience. His on screen aura does half his work. He delivers

what is expected of him in a per functory manner but with pa-nache. Aditi Rao Hydari as the resilient, stuttering Bhoomi is ear-nest in her approach but fails to hook you emotionally. SidhantGupta in a poorly written character as Bhoomi's love interest,Neeraj is wasted.Timid, shy and frightful, Puru Chibber por trays his character Vishalwith all sincerity. Sharad Kelkar as the antagonist Dhauli, is likethe run-of-the-mill bad man of Hindi cinema. He adds no nuancesto his character and he disappoints, for no fault of his. He is ablysuppor ted by the character playing Gulab. Shekhar Suman asArun's friend and drinking par tner, has his moments of on screenglory when he attacks Gulab. The only actor who stands out among the ensemble is Riddhi Sen,the young Bengali actor who plays Jeetu, Bhoomi's neighbour anda trusted employee. With a wide graph to per form, he is naturaland does not disappoint. The background score and the musicwhich includes a seductive item number per formed by the effort-less Sunny Leone, is mundane and dismissible. Overall, this filmcoming from director Omung Kumar who had earlier given us filmslike "Mary Kom" and "Sarbjit", is a big let down. The entire viewingexperience is truly repulsive and an eye sore.

'HASEENA PARKAR' SURVIVES THECURSE OF A CLUNKY LEAD

CAST: SHRADDHA KAPOOR, SIDDHANTH

KAPOOR, PRIYANKA SETIA, ANKUR BHATIA

DIRECTOR: APOORVA LAKHIA

RATING: ****

If only Haseena Parkar didn't suffer from the curse of clunky, inept, shoddy central per formance, it would have been a far more watchablepotboiler on gangsterism. And I use the word "potboiler" with all duerespect. It's not easy to make a massy masala movie out of themayhem and murkiness of the mafia kingdom. Rahul Dholakia's"Raees" earlier this year wedded crime and kitsch. Apoorva Lakhiadoes it with a fair share of elan and chutzpah. "Haseena Parkar" isabout that Dubai-based gangster who allegedly ran his nefarious busi-ness activities in Mumbai through his sister in the 1990s. The brotherand the sister had themselves a blast. For tuitously, Lakhia doesn'tmiss Da-wood for the trees. The carefully char ted journey of HaseenaParkar secretes enough enigma mystery intrigue dread uncer taintyfear and blood to keep us watching for two hours.Fasahat Khan shoots the shoot-outs and the volatile shindigs in shadesof sinister death. For better or for worse, Lakhia keeps the pacingfrenzied, almost ruinously so. Barely are the characters given a chanceto breathe their frustration and rage into a system that is so corrupt itfosters criminality. The uneven pacing pumped up with a poundingbackground score clearly indicates the director's massy intentions. And no harm in that. If only Lakhia's principal lead had insight intowhat she was supposed to do. Shraddha Kapoor slides cluelesslythrough the various lies and lives of Haseena Parkar with a complete

absence of inner conviction. Her per formance is so surface-level, Iwondered if I've seen a more sorry instance of miscasting in recenttimes. The unknown actress (Priyanka Setia), who plays the publicprosecutor in the interestingly constructed cour troom scenes, effor t-lessly steals every frame from the female lead. Haseena's lawyer, played by Rajesh Tailang, is equally compelling. And Ankur Bhatia asParkar's husband is suitably filmy flamboyant and fleeting in his briefrole. The rest of the teeming cast barely gets a chance to register inthe bloodsplattered storytelling. Shraddha's Haseena is a whiney ,self -impor tant, delusional trouble-shooter. Siddhant Kapoor's Dawoodis better, more roundly shaped probably because the actor is requiredlargely to speak on the phone to a sister whom he repeatedly extendsa helping hand, and not in the way other siblings do.It's Dawood's ambivalent role in his sister's life -- did he play a hand in empow-ering her criminal activities in Mumbai or did she compel him to stay away fromher affairs? That provides a sizeable leeway to the narrative. Those who have seenLakhia's riveting "Shootout At Lokhandwala", would know the director loves gang-ster shootouts. In "Haseena Parkar", the shootouts are more cinematic and staged, less real and documentary like. The emphasis is on generating a gratuitous excite-ment. In this endeavour, the narrative sometimes loses its hold on the characters'moral campus, letting them spin in their own web of deceit rather than pull them outof their discrepancies to make sense of their outlawed lives.
