Engagement and collaboration with business, the professions and the community is systemic across AUT, and opportunities to provide students with industry learning experiences is a priority.

Shadow a Leader Day is an initiative of AUT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, where both Auckland secondary school students and AUT students have the opportunity to follow an industry leader for a day.

This experience gives students invaluable insights into how business leaders work in the professional world and opens their eyes up to the skills and attributes required to navigate a successful career in their chosen field.

Shadow a Leader Day matches one Year 13 secondary school student with one AUT Business, Economics or Law student, and one business leader, for the students to “shadow” the business leader for the day. Running since 2012, Shadow a Leader Day now sees over 75 teams of three participating each year.

AUT students selected are those excelling in their studies and demonstrating leadership potential through extra-curricular activities.

Secondary school students selected are those with an interest in a career in business, economics or law, who are high-achieving and may be engaged in entrepreneurial challenges or initiatives, including the Young Enterprise Scheme.

The AUT students, with advanced knowledge in their area of study and experience as tertiary students, are charged with guiding their younger student team members.

Shadow a Leader Day begins with breakfast at the AUT City Campus for all participating business leaders and students. Students meet their teams in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, to prepare them for the day ahead and hear from an inspiring leader in a keynote address.

After breakfast, the students follow their leader on their activities for the day, which may include:

• Planning and strategy meetings• Client meetings and presentations• Negotiation discussions• Board meetings• Product manufacture or factory tours• Team building

ON THE DAY

A short online survey will be sent to all students to complete following the day.

Participating secondary school students are invited to apply for an AUT scholarship.

AUT students can credit their participation to the AUT Edge Award, and may be invited to speak or participate in an AUT business or community partnership event either as a student or graduate.

AUT will run two workshops in May for all AUT and secondary school students participating in Shadow a Leader Day. The workshops will include CV writing and professional communications.

The dress code for Shadow a Leader Day is school uniform for secondary school students and business attire for AUT students.

Students will make their own way home from the day’s activities at a time agreed with their leader.

“ I just wanted to say thanks for taking time out of your day to show me around and thoroughly explain the ins and outs of Spark. It was amazing seeing the infrastructure and hearing how the different technologies worked and why. I also loved seeing the different teams at work at Spark HQ. You’ve given me a lot to think about where I want to take my business career and how I want to apply it. I really appreciate what you did, it was an amazing experience.”Ethan Dillon, Albany Senior High School to Rob Berrill, Agile Tribe Lead - Physical Infrastructure, Spark

“ The Shadow a Leader Day was truly an experience that I will never forget and I’m grateful to have taken part in this opportunity with The Warehouse Group. I came out of the day finding my true new love for marketing. An important thing I discovered is that everyone loved what they were doing and doing what they loved. I hope that one day I can express my passion for marketing the way it was expressed through employees of The Warehouse Group.”Hardi Shah, Avondale School student to Pejman Okhovat, CEO, The Warehouse and Warehouse Stationery

“ I wanted to extend my sincerest thanks to the both of you and wider Air New Zealand team for the time and effort you invested to make my Shadow a Leader day so memorable. Witnessing firsthand how my degree and the teachings behind it are considered and implemented in a real business setting is something I definitely do not take for granted. It has inspired me to look farther than the limits of my textbooks, and take a holistic approach to the teachings from both my Marketing and Finance majors. Having met with people of your calibre, I’d like to make a point of keeping the lines of communication open and stay in touch. I hope to cross paths with you again and continue the relationship we have created.”Noor Yaikoob, AUT student to Jeremy O’Brien, Regional General Manager Direct and Market Development, Air New Zealand

“ Thank you and all your colleagues so much for the Shadow a Leader experience. It was a fantastic and unique day for me and I enjoyed every moment in Fuji Xerox NZ. I really appreciate your time and all the arrangement for us shadows. I was surprised when I knew over 99% of your products were recycled in different ways and so impressed by Emma’s speech on sustainability and all the contributions Fuji Xerox made for the people, society and the world in this area. I learned so much from everyone’s professional and open working style and it helped me to relate real business to my MBA programme in a good way. It was so kind of Kevin to take us to the workshop and get a much deeper understanding of Fuji Xerox’s business. Bevan and Brad’s conversations with me also taught me a lot in the areas of customer service and supply chain and they gave me a lot of ideas for my MBA’s applied-business project. You inspire me and I will take your words to be a better person and make contributions to the society and New Zealand.”Ming Tan, AUT student to Peter Thomas, Managing Director, Fuji Xerox New Zealand

“ Your enthusiasm, questions and willing participation made for a great all round experience. I’m glad you all took so much away from it and hope it helps you in your own search for meaningful and rewarding work. I specifically enjoyed observing and hearing how and what you seemed to value. Knowing how the next generation of talent wants to work, in terms of being flexible i.e. working where and when you want, is useful asorganisations grapple with these expectations. I was alsoreally heartened by your observations around how ourmarketing approaches give us the privilege of tacklingdiversity, mental health and purpose.”Rory Walker, Strategic Account Director to students Jacklyn Lim (AUT Business School), Jaxon Ingold (Takapuna Grammar School)

“ This was my sixth year involved with Shadow a Leader. What always surprises me is how focused the students are about the careers and lives they have ahead of them, having a dream in their minds which they are determined to achieve. It is truly a pleasure to have students in our business for a day and to be able to share a little about what leadership is about.”Mike Marr, Group CEO, ASG and TPT Group

“ Thank you so much for the Shadow a Leader opportunity. This year was the first time students from Howick College participated. When I picked them up at the end of their day, both of our students talked excitedly of their day. They learnt so much. I am so appreciative of the experience you organised for students.”Mary van Daatselaar, Head Careers, Howick College

“ I had a wonderful experience at Shadow a Leader Day. Bell Gully was a very inspiring environment and my time there was extremely informative and helpful. I had a truly wonderful day and the experience was invaluable.”Naomi Ng, Year 13 student, Baradene College
