Noach - You D’man
Bereshis 6:9 Noach was a righteous faultless man in his generations"
R av Giftar once visited Ner Israel on Parshas Noach and made the
following observation: We see from this pasuk that Noach pos-
sessed three qualities. He was a Tzadik (righteous person). He was a
Tamim (a completely faultless person). And he was an Ish (a 'person').
However, notice that the sequence of the adjectives is Ish, Tzadik,
Tamim. We thus see that before a person can be a Tzadik or a Tamim, he
first has to be an Ish -- a mentch. Rav Gifter told a story of Rav Yisrael
Salanter who had a son-in-law who was about to take for himself a son-
in-law. The future son-in-law was a tremendous scholar and Rav Yisrael's
son- in-law was so impressed with him that he sent a notebook of the
young man's Torah insights to Rav Yisrael Salanter, so that Rav Yisrael
could see who his granddaughter was marrying. Rav Yisrael read the
Torah insights and replied: You showed me that he is in fact a Gaon, but
in Devorim 22:16 it does not say: 'I gave my daughter to this Gaon or
illui'; it says 'I gave my daughter to this man' It is nice to be a Gaon and a
Talmud Chacham, but first you must impress me that he is a
mentch." p.s. This future grandson-in-law whose chiddushei Torah im-
pressed Rav Yisrael Salanter was none other than Rav Chaim Ozer
Grodzenski.
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

RECLAIMING SHABBAT:
Ensuring that everyone has a meal for Shabbos is so important to strengthening our
shul! We are in need of regular volunteers! If you would like to serve as a Reclaim-
ing Shabbat host, by agreeing to take one additional guest (or more) a month to
either Shabbat meal, please e-mail Yehudit Garmaise at [email protected].
Reclaiming Shabbat takes place the second Shabbat of every month, however we
will skip October because of the Holidays, and resume Nov. 17 and 18.
SECURITY NOTICE:
No one has permission to use the back gate in the shul to enter or exit the shul. Anyone doing so is unnecessarily compromising the security of the shul for his or her own convenience. Our highly trained and armed (and expensive) security guard has told us this is dangerous and wasteful. He is stationed at the gate on Doheny and that is the only place where it is permitted to leave and enter until the shul has been evacuated.
