Naso – To save a life
B efore the Second World War, in the town town of Ostovitz in Poland lived the famous Ostrovitzer Rebbe, who was reputed
to have fasted daily for 40 years to atone for the transgressions the Jew-ish people. Sixty years ago a Jew from that town made aliya to
Yerushalayim and told the following story to Rabbi Avrohom Bar Shaul z”l of Rechovot. Many tragedies had befallen his family over the years. However the greatest disappointment of all was that all their children had died before they had reached 30 days. After the death of the last
child the wife who was completely distraught went to visit the Rebbe. “I shall not leave this house until the Rebbe gives me a brocho that the
next child I bear will survive!” she sobbed bitterly, “I have a suggestion.” answered the Ostrovitzer after several minutes. “If you wish to ensure that your child survives you should use a name from the parsha that is read that week.” About a year later the woman gave birth to a daugh-ter. The parsha was Naso. They came to the Rebbe and told him what had occurred, and that they could not find a name that could be used for their daughter. “It is possible that the name that I shall suggest you will not like but I promise you that if you call her this name she will sur-
vive.” replied the Rebbe. “Very well.” answered the desperate wom-an.“Tzilponis!” This was the mother of Shimshon that we read about in the haftora. The Chochmas Shlomo on Bava Basra 81 makes the com-ment that the name Tzilponis is an effective to counter ruach ra – the
evil spirit. The couple came to Eretz Yisroel with their daughter and this is the story about the Ostravitzer that they told to Rav Avrohom bar
Shaul z”l. Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen
