LETTER BOX

As many of the congregants know I have been somewhat active in the EBJC for the last 20+ years. As time has gone by I had strongly felt part and parcel of this Shul. However, if I had any doubts they were erased thoroughly by the attention I received from the Shul and so many congregants and arms of the Shul as a result of the recent loss of my mother. I have always said and always will say it’s the people that make this Shul the great Shul that it is. The people have certainly given their support to me and I will be forever grateful. Although it is inappropriate to name any names, I would like to name just one and that is Rabbi Benson. His conducting of the funeral and eulogy was so spe-cial; something that will be remembered as long as I live; not to mention his wonderful support. In conclusion, I would like to thank all of you for everything, G-d bless you and Zei Gezzundt.

Jeremy D. Saferstein

Rabbi Benson

Dear Friends, On Sunday mornings, I am teaching a class, sponsored by the Rabbinical Assem-bly, for people interested in learning about Judaism, many of whom who are al-so interested in converting to Judaism. I taught a similar class in Los Angeles for a number of years as well. In a world in which intermarriage is increasingly common, and in which the differences between how young non-Jews and Jews are raised, where they go to school and where they work are decreasing, we can only expect that intermarriage will remain an issue in our Jewish communi-ty. Rather than bemoan these trends, or throw up my hands in despair, I chose to become involved in teaching such classes for conversion, and to continue to teach the one now being offered at EBJC. I have found, that the vast majority of my students are people who are serious about Judaism, who, when they are in a relationship, make their Jewish part-ners more serious about Judaism, and in general, become worthy and wonder-ful additions to the Jewish people. Sure, they may not have had the same ex-periences growing up as many of us have, they may not know everything that we’d like to think we already know, but they do, almost uniformly among those who actually go so far as to convert, have a deep passion and commitment to God, Torah, the Jewish people and Israel. And we should welcome them in our community. We should be sure that our comments and language around converts and candi-dates for conversion be appropriate and respectful. It is the greatest of sins to be insulting to such people and even off-hand comments may need to reviewed before spoken so as to avoid embarrassment. We have a great opportunity with converts and conversion candidates and with anyone who visits our synagogue to make them feel welcome, and I encourage you to all think about what you can do to make all those who come to EBJC experience what a wonderful com-munity this is.

Yours, Rabbi Aaron Benson

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

Sometimes, it’s okay to cheat!

This is a true story: a few years ago, I was teaching a 6th grade class at another synagogue. I also was leading Jr. Congregation for kids in 4th – 6th grades. There was a requirement that students had to attend services at least 10 times a year. Now, this particular 6th grade class was notorious for NOT attending. Every year, their Jr. Congregation attendance cards would begin with something like, ―-10.‖ One Shabbat morning, one of my students showed up at services. At one point, a fifth grade girl was leading the kids in the chatzi kaddish (which is difficult to say because it is written in ARAMAIC, not He-brew). In the middle of the prayer, my student leans over to me, to-tally amazed. She said, ―Nita! She can do this difficult prayer! I can’t, and she’s younger than I am!‖ (as if age had a lot to do with it). I quipped back to her, ―She cheats—she comes every week!‖ There is no mistaking it: frequent attendance at services helps us learn our prayers. A child who goes often to children’s services will feel right at home in any prayer service. As an added bonus, come the day of their bar/t mitzvah, a huge stress will have been relieved be-cause services will not be a stranger to them. Recognizing this, we have made some changes in our Shabbat Morning Children’s Services. We are very excited about this and urge you to bring your children often. --Nita Polay Levin

EBJC PRESENTS THE NEW AND IMPROVED SHABBAT MORNING CHILDREN’S TEFILOT (services)

As of Jan. 1, all children’s services will begin at 10:30 to allow all children

to come in to the sanctuary for the end of services

TOT SHABBAT—for children 5 years and younger Join our wonderful veteran leader, Carol Landa, who has games, stories, and just the right amount of prayers for young children. Bring your child and stay to share the experience! On-going now. MINI-MINYAN—for children K- 3rd grades Join Allison Sorkin in our latest addition to Shabbat morning davvening! Games, stories, and a lovely siddur will teach your child the skeleton of the prayer ser-vice in an enjoyable way, with singing and a bright atmosphere and candy. This will be an age-appropriate service that is designed just for this level! Begins Jan. 29. JR. CONGREGATION—for children in 4th – 6th grades Children of this age are beginning to think beyond the basics and want to test their newfound independence. They are curious about the unknown, but still find comfort in the past. Awakening questions might begin to trouble faith and they want to figure out things for themselves. Our leader, Ethan Lewkowicz, entertains their curiosity, speaks openly with them about God and Jewish tradi-tion, and gives them the forum they need to develop into practicing adults. Besides, the weekly raffle, toys and candy, don’t hurt! AND to sweeten the pot: we are having a CLASS PARTY CHALLENGE: The class that gets the biggest percentage of attendees in Jr. Congregation between Jan. 1 and March 30th, will get a party of their choice: ice cream or pizza! On-going now. THE MINYANAIRES—pre-bar/t mitzvah children Now is the time to become more comfortable in the sanctuary as they prepare to take their rightful place in the adult Jewish community! Here they will de-velop a knowledge of the goings-on in a traditional service as they prepare for their special day and learn what it takes to be comfortable in any synagogue anywhere in the world. Rabbi Benson will take cognizance of them as a group and ask questions that will win prizes!

Renew—refresh—rejuvenate—re-energize JOIN SISTERHOOD TODAY

I want to thank everyone who committed their time and ―pocketbooks‖ to the Sisterhood Chanu-kah Shabbat on Saturday, December 4th. It was a rousing success! A Yasher Koach to both Gloria Jaslow for coordinating the event and to Barbara Pollak who delivered a wonderfully enjoyable D’var Torah. I also want to thank everyone who helped with the Kiddush. Please join us on Friday, January 14th at 6:30 for our annual Torah Fund Dinner and Service. This year we’re changing it up a bit and having a buffet with different menu items. The cost will be $22.00 for adults and $8.00 for children. There will not be a separate children’s menu. The guest speaker will be Tamar Marvin who is a Doctoral student at JTS. She led the ―Rabbi’s‖ class prior to the Chanukah Shabbat service. She was fascinating! In the beginning of 2011, be on the lookout for the Purim order forms. Don’t delay in sending them in! As always, SCRIP is a WIN/WIN for EVERY-ONE!!!...........Contact Carol 732-257-6752 or email her at [email protected] Our gift shop is there for YOU!!!........Please buy ALL of your Judaica from US!!! The year just flew by! We have accomplished so much with ALL of your help! On behalf of my family, I wish everyone a healthy and happy secular New Year! Cindy Rabinowitz

Shortly we will re-do the gym floors, replace the exterior doors, work on the air conditioning, and help with any other repairs based on the profits the Men's Club makes from the Texas Hold-em event. Although the Men’s Club did not make close to the money needed to pay for those events, the Men’s Club will find a way to make sure that these repairs will be taken care of. We also want to thank all of the participants who played in Texas Hold-em. All had a fun time. If you did not participate, you missed a fun evening. Please consider participating in our next event. The Men's Club again thanks Don Bloom for all of his arts and sketches promoting all these Men's Club functions, including Men's Club articles in the Recorder. 2010-11 basketball is being run by Lloyd Shepetin. Mark Perlman and Alan Ferrer are biting at the bit to prepare yummy breakfasts for all synagogue members who attend the Men's Club breakfasts. On January 9th, we are putting together a Jewish sports legends morning. Alan Freedman from the Jewish Athletes Hall of Fame will be presenting the topic "Jewish sports legends". This will include a question and answer session. Anyone who enjoys sports is encouraged to attend to learn about our lesser known Jewish Heritage. (Yes there are Jewish ath-letes, not just those who play flag football, softball or basketball in the Teicher Gym). In February, on Super Sunday, we will be participating in World Wide Wrap. As part of that morn-ing we will have a special breakfast including lox and other goodies; to those who help the Men's Club clean out the closet, collect the old prayer books that we can no longer use, and work out a proper bur-ial for the sidurim and other inscribed objects. On March 27, 2010, together with the Social Action Committee the Men's Club will be participat-ing with their blood drive by holding a breakfast and honoring other unsung heroes of EBJC. These are people who do many great deeds, who go unrecognized. Since all that donate blood are unsung heroes, what better day to honor the other unsung heroes at EBJC. The Honorees that morning will include, Mark Pearlman who has been making the Men’s Club Breakfasts for the past 20 years: David Julis the founder of the Shalom Squad and Keruv, two groups at EBJC who believe in Welcoming: Davis Mandell the Northern New Jersey Regional President for FJMC that is in charge of all men’s clubs: Jose Mendez and Gale Dillman two people that make sure that EBJC functions on a daily basis. There would be no EBJC events without Jose amd Gale; and Jordan Feldman. Jordan is the head of the Bikur Chorim Com-mittee at EBJC. In your lifetime, you hope not to see Jordan at part of his job duties, However if need-ed Jordan is a pleasant face to be seen, especially when you are not feeling well. We thank all of our EBJC heroes & thank Elise Merkel, the chair of the Social Action Committee who be overseeing all events on March 27. The Men's Club is also working with Ken Freedman in bringing in Tim Labos, the foul shooting coach of the New Jersey Nets, working With Sisterhood in setting up a trip to the Jewish Museum in the spring of 2011, and on June 12, 2011, the Men's Club annual trip to the Trenton Thunder where the Mets will play the Yankees. In the past 2 years at least 10 players that we saw played in the major leagues. Some will be starting with the Mets and Yankees next year. The Men’s Club will be delivering yellow candles to the entire congregation for Yom Hashoa in April 2010. On May 7th 2010, the Men’s Club will have our annual Men’s Club Shabbat, where all men’s club members are encouraged to participate. The next morning we will have our annual Mother’s Day roses & lox boxes. What a great gift for your mother and wife, and very little travel to make your mother and wife very happy. All are welcome to attend any of these Men's Club events. If you are a member of the Men's Club, we thank you for joining. If you have not joined the Men's Club, WHY HAVEN'T YOU. Please join the Men's Club. Come to our breakfasts, join us for softball, bas-ketball, or flag football, show up for Texas hold-em, La Shana Tova, help us with the prayer books, Yom Hashoa, Roses and lox boxes and many other Men's Club events. The first step in joining the Men's Club is to contact our membership chairs, Herb Sussman, Gerald Silver, David Julis and Jan Lewis. It costs only $36 to join the Men's Club. This is a great way to support your synagogue by getting involved and participating in many fun and exciting events. We really want all synagogue members to join the MEN's CLUB. REMEMBER, WE ARE NOT YOUR FATHER'S MEN'S CLUB, NOR DO WE INTEND TO BE. STEVEN JEFFREY HARKAVY - EBJC MEN'S CLUB PRESIDENT

Teen Program ~~ January 2011 Event

Please join us Saturday evening, January 8, 2011 for a teen participatory Ma'ariv and Havdallah

service, following by a dairy dinner for teens in the Youth Lounge. Rabbi Benson will lead a dis-

cussion on "What do we owe to the future of Judaism?" Encourage your teen to come talk about

all of the Jewish things they do, and don't do, in their lives. They will discuss what could impact

and influence their own and their community's futures.

The EBJC Teen program complements the socialization and leadership opportunities offered

by Jewish youth groups and clubs. We offer a communal learning situation within a synagogue.

Rabbi Benson is directly involved in teaching and overseeing the programming content of all of our

teen sessions.

Whether you recall having had a positive, formative experience yourself as a teen or wished you

had had such an experience please help us provide that opportunity to our teens today. Dona-

tions can be sent to EBJC. Please clearly mark on your check that the funds are for the Teen

Program. Thank you in advance for your support!

Hi, I’m Michael Kersh and I am looking forward to becoming a Bar Mitzvah on 1/1/11. I was born with a cleft lip but thanks to my parents, I am becoming the good-looking guy I’m supposed to be. There are lots of boys and girls born in the world with related deformities that aren’t so lucky. So, for my Mitzvah project, I am raising money to donate to Smile Train, an organization that assists children in need to have the corrective procedures done. Information will be available at my celebration and can also be found online at www.smiletrain.org. Thank you.

In honor of my Bar Mitzvah, I will be collecting old athletic shoes (any brand). Nike has made it possible for athletic shoes of every kind to become much more than waste in a landfill. Since the early 1990’s ReUse-A-Shoe has recycled worn out ath-letic shoes, along with manufacturing scrap, into sports and playground surfaces. To date, more then 21 million pairs of old athletic shoes have been recycled from landfills and reborn in-to hundreds of sports and playground surfaces around the world. The trash is not the final stop for those faithful com-panions. If you have a donation of sneakers, please leave them at the shul office. What an easy way to save our environment! No shoes containing metal No cleats or dress shoes No wet or damp shoes No flip-flops. Thank you in advance for helping me successfully complete my mitzvah project. Matt Ross NikeReUseAShoe.com

Alex Frank’s Bar Mitzvah Project I have always been an animal lover. For my mitzvah project, I have chosen to give back to our community. I will volunteer at an animal shelter in town and work with the animals that re-side there. Alex Frank
