Icecap Expeditions & Trekking in Patagonia

We run regular expeditions (Nov and Dec) to the Southern Patagonian Icefield. The

expedition encircles the stupendous Mount Fitroy and Cerro Torre massifs. The Icecap is

the largest piece of ice in the world outside the polar regions. It is very special and gives

    experience without actually going there!

"Trekking Capital". There is great variety from simple day trips to tough multi day tours

involving simple glacier and river crossings. All with the spectacular scenery of Los Glacieres National Park close to

Details our responsible travel and environment policy for employing localpeople, respecting the environment andsupporting local mountain initiatives

Spanish Highs is an environmentally friendly company which offers travellers authentic andresponsible holidays. Here is our approach to responsiblsustainable travel. We encourage ourguests to support us in this, whilst having a fantastic activity holiday with us here in theAlpujarras and SierraNevada.

    espect for the environment

We offer expertly guided, low impact activity holidays in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada mountains for individuals and small groups, staying in smlocal hotels and both guarded andunguarded mountain refuges. We do our best to protect this breath-taking, unspoiled but fragile wilderness and aguests to do so too.

We carry bags so all rubbish is extracted from the mountain. Not only ours, but also the litter left by others! The development of rural tourism in the area provides economic benefits and encourages analternative to that of the overdeveloped "costas".

    upporting local mountain initiatives

Together with local mountain lovers we have been instrumental indeveloping an initiative to restore mountainrefuges in the SierraNevada. Accion Sierra Nevada started out in 2011 as threepeople cleaning and painting theRefugio de Caballo (2900m)above Lanjaron. Now we have the support of the Parque NacionalSierra Nevada and

Accion Sierra Nevada has it's ownwebsite andFacebook Fan Page where you will find all the latest news. Wehave plans to further restore other mountain refuges in the Sierra Nevada.

Responsible Travel and Environment Policy for Spanish Highs holidays

Keeping our own "house" in order

Our office location has solar water heating and we are continually striving to replace existingfacilities with solar products (ie our sun oven). We donot print "in house" unless print is anabsolute necessity when we use local office sources to print. Recycling is of vital importance! We dehydrate and prepare "mountain food" from our garden.

    Employing local people

Spanish Highs started out in 2002 with UK based guides. Since 2008 our policy has been to widenthestaff base and the main criteria now is "local people".We have a pleasant mix ofspanish, german and ukguides, all of which are local to the Alpujarras andSierra Nevada. Furthermore, weare activelydeveloping our"Expert Guide" project throughoutAndalucia and Spain. This initiative isto provideemployment for local experts. We also develop tours with local people trying toretain the old traditional ways. In 2011 we started"Trekking with Mules" in order to revive traditional ways of moving in the mountains and thusemploying local people.

    Culture

The Sierra Nevada National Park covers an area of 86,208 hectares, making it the biggest national park. There are 14 peaks over 3000m with thehighest being Mulhacen 3482m. The temperaturerange is dramatic with the summits under snow for many months, followed by a hot Mediterraneanstyle summer which creates microclimates.

It has an exceptional variety of animal and plant life due to the combination of altitude and itsproximity to the Mediterranean.

Ascend Mulhacen, Sierra Nevada, via day, multi day, night and backcountry skiing tours

Climb Mulhacen, the highest peak in western europe outside the Alps. We offer year round ascents in winter and summer condition. Also availableare ascents on skis or snowshoes whenconditions permit.

Mulhacen rises to 3482m making it the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula and continentalSpain. It is part of the Sierra Nevada range in theCordillera Penibetica. Mulhacen is also thehighest peak in Europe outside the Alps and the Caucasus Mountains, and the third most topographicalprominent peak in Western Europe, after Mont Blanc and Mount Etna. Its namecomes from the Spanish transciption of Muley Abul Hassan, thepenultimate Muslim King ofGranada in the 15th century. We only use the best qualified and experienced professional guides. All have lived and worked inthe Sierra Nevada since 2002. They speak englishspanish and french. We restrict numbers to amaximum of 4 clients to a guide. Mulhacen has been climbed by our team more than 220 times (up toend 2011), more often than not in full winter conditions.

Did you know that you can nowclimb Mulhacen and Mt Toubkal (highest in North Africa) in thesame week?

We offer the following guided climbs throughout the year

    Summer ascents

    1 day Itinerary

Normally from May to November inclusive but snow conditionsmay dictate when the trek turns into a moreseriousmountaineering challenge.

Climb Mulhacen, the highest mountain in mainland Spain

    Grade: Challenging

To and from the Hoya de Portillo. About 8-9 hours of walking is involved (1300m ascent), ascending by the longsouth ridge anddescending via the west flank. In our opinion this does not reflect the best the mountain has to offer. The two day ascent gives you chance toenjoy the mountain and see more dramatic views.

Return viasouth ridge to refugio. Continue back towaiting transport. 1000m ascent and 4 hours from hut to summit. Ski Mulhacen

Mulhacen at 3482m is a magnificent ski touring peak in goodsnow conditions. From December to May inclusive we can offer ski descents of thepeak. But, what descents areavailable and which are the best for backcountry skiingenthusiasts? There are options for all grades of skier. Easier ways for the beginneror for marginal snow conditions, and tougher runs for the moreexperienced on good days. Most 2 day ski tours willovernight either at the Refugio de Poqueira (guarded), or the Caldera refugio (unguarded),or even wild camp at SieteLagunas.Descents are the interesting part of any ski tour. Will it be a headlong, exhilarating dash down the mountainside onperfect snow or will we be

getting exasperated with thechanging crud, ice, breakable crust and slush? Will we be back at the hut in 20 minutes or in 90?Mulhacen has the

ability to deliver all of these and more.

Read detailed descriptions about theBackcountry Skiing Descents from Mulhacen. Note. It goeswithout saying that on every ski tour axe, crampons and helmet should be carried and used ifnecessary! We can advise on current mountain and snow conditions, access points, route choice and even provide gearand equipment hire.

(normally snow covered from November untilMay), the mountains provide a reliable winter destination. We offer a variety of courses and multiday

tours designed to prepare you for your alpine adventures.

ountaineering & Winter Skills Courses Sierra Nevada

Winter skills courses, ascents of peaks and mountaineering days in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Learn how to

walk the winterhills in safety. Our winter mountaineering and winter skillscourses are held in Spain's SierraNevada mountains during themonths of December through to the end of May.

Courses of 2, 4 or 6 days duration. Normally 2 instructional days followed by optional practical ascents of peaks

and routes, putting the new found skills into practice.

"We both had a brilliant week and really enjoyed everything we did. We're now busy tying knots and planning our

next trip. I would certainly recommend Spanish Highs to anyone considering a Winter/Alpine skills course as our

trip easily exceeded all our expectations."Ross Litherland &Cath Crowther.

    day Alpine Introduction

Throughout the course you will learn the essentials for safe travel on snow and glacial terrain including: crampon

and ice axetechniques; glacier travel, including crevasse rescue; basicnavigation. To tackle rocky ridges you

will learn fixed belay andalpine style running belay techniques. Simple snow gullies and faces will be climbed.

Guided mountaineering, winter skills, alpine introduction courses in Spain's Sierra Nevada

We base ourselves in a remote, ruined refuge high in themountains. From here we cover all the topics

contained in ourbasic winter skills course, but also tackle simple alpine climbs. Snow holing, winter and alpine

bivouacing and camp skills are also covered. All in a superb mountain setting!

"Now having been climbing in the Sierra Nevada, I think it is probably better preparation for alpine and greater

ranges than anything the UK can offer. You could quite easily be a novice and pickup the general climbing and

mountaineering skills easier here than you can in the UK. Cost, weather, type of climbing, speed required,

access, skills needed etc are all similar to the Alps, butin a less intimidating environment. Mike Partridge,
