Owl Hoops Coaches Corner
Like most, this is
probably my favorite time of
the year. The holiday season is
a special time where all of us
get to step away from the nor-
mal day to day routines and
spend time with important
people in our lives. There are
stories told, hugs given and lots
of love spread throughout
most households. It is an op-
portunity for us to give thanks
for all the great miracles we
have and continue to experi-
ence.
This is also a special
time of year for a basketball
team. Not because they get five
days off (although I am sure
they are excited about that) but
more importantly, because it is
a time where your team can
reflect and grow. Reflection
and growth are the two most
important components of com-
petitive athletics (at least I think
so). Like life, we must identify
the areas in which we have done
a nice job and be honest about
the areas we have not quit
reached our expectations for
one reason or another. As most
of us know, this is easier as you
get older. Young kids (players)
do not always see the value in
reflecting and being honest with
oneself. Young kids have a ten-
dency to avoid hard truth and
turn away from adversity. Truly
embracing this idea takes time,
patience and thick skin. This
nice little break gives us a time
to watch more film, break down
mistakes and teach how we
need things to be done for us to
continue getting better and I
am looking forward to that
learning process with our team!
Just the other day I
was reminded of a favorite
coaching quote, “If you change
the way you look at things, the
things you look at change. You
must believe in them before
they believe in themselves.”
This holiday season I’ve chal-
lenged our staff to look at things
differently here. Believe in the
progress our kids have made and
push them to keep going. I chal-
lenge you to do the same in your
personal life. Find someone in
your family this Christmas who
could use an extra pat on the
butt or vote of confidence as
they work through a tough time
in their life. We all have the abil-
ity to be a “light” for someone..let
your light shine! Merry CHRIST-
MAS and Happy New Year!

Career Night for Alumnus Matt Lucas
Seymour High School Boys Basketball
Last week, Owl Basketball alumnus Matt Lu-cas posted a career night for Oakland City University. Lucas was nearly perfect scoring 27 points to lead his Mighty Oaks to a big win over the Mavericks of Ohio State University Mansfield. He was good on 10 of 11 shot at-tempts, including an impressive 6 for 7 from three point range, which is good for the fourth best three point shooting game in OCU men's basketball history. OCU is off to a great start-posting seven wins in their first eight tries.
Lucas is just one of many Owls out there mak-ing us proud. We invite all of our basketball alumni to keep in touch and to keep us in-formed of the great things happening in your lives. If you’d like to follow Matt’s progress this year, check out the official Oakland City Men’s Basket-ball site: www.oak.edu/athletics2/basketball_men/index.php

Thank you to all of the coaches, parents and players of our 2014 recreation league! Behind every
great varsity team is a great youth program. We have over 230 young kids from kindergarten through
sixth grade committing themselves to our future. We have a tremendous history here in our basket-
ball program, but we are confident that our future will be even better thanks to your hard work!
We’d like to give special recognition to our amazing rec. league coaches:
Kyle Coates, Talmadge Reasoner, Michael Deckard, PJ Stein, Shawn Charlton, Shane Busby, Matt
Dennis, Nate Unterseher, Matt Gillaspy, Michael Gross, Nathan Frey, Drew Hillian, Shawn Rockey,
Chris Herbert, Brandon Simmons, Jay Schmidt, Jason Fowler, Melissa Holbrook, Dan Loebker, Thomas
Black, Richard Beatty, Jason Fee, Toby Lawson, Patrick Boyd and Ted Leudeman.
We hope to see everyone again on January 16th for youth basketball night. All of our players will be
honored at halftime of the boy’s varsity game. Please wear your game jerseys. We are looking forward
to a great night.
