PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome to the last newsletter for Term 3.

The term has provided many opportunities for our students and our families to connect with learning and join in College life. We have witnessed many activities including, Seymour College Has Talent, a myriad of excursions and special events which have brought our students closer to their school and local communities.

The new Learning Building and the Early Learning Centre are on track for completion this year and these will add another dimension to the teaching and learning experiences offered at Seymour College.

Last week I hosted Mr. Chris McDonnell, the CEO of Seymour Health for the ‘Principal for a Day’ program. This was a great opportunity to showcase all that we offer and it also allowed our leaders to connect and build networks with Mr. McDonnell’s health industry. Both the Hospital and Seymour College are major employers in the town, and as leaders of large teams of people, we were able to share strategies and learn from each other.

Our transition program for Year 6 students into Year 7 in 2020 has continued with some of our Tallarook and Nagambie students returning to their primary schools last week.

Today we farewelled Mr. John Huggins, the College’s maintenance employee, who has worked at the College since 1985. We wished John all the best on his retirement and celebrated his long service over morning tea.

Next Tuesday, the 17th September, we host the student-led conferences which commence at 12pm and conclude at 7pm. Please book your time via the Compass portal or contact the general office on 57711300. All students are required to attend the allocated times you book on this day.

A reminder that practice exams and study sessions will be held in the school holidays for our VCE students who are preparing for the end of year exams. Details will be on the Compass calendar.

Lastly, all the best to the students who are representing the College in the

State School Spectacular at the Melbourne Arena on Saturday! We have

students in the mass choir and the mass dance groups again this year.

Gail Hardman - Executive Principal

The year 8s have been working on their reading goal of ‘Reading aloud

to an audience’.

Over a 2 week period exploring fluency, the students were sharpening

up their skills in reading with phrasing, expression and intonation.

Their target audience were the preps, where picture storybooks were

shared and feedback was given on their performance - yes, by the

preps! The preps were also able to showcase their reading skills.

All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the year 8s learnt

that it really wasn’t that daunting.

Well done to everyone.

Dean Bush - Assistant Principal

Year 12 Synchrotron Visit Last Monday, Year 12 Physics

students visited the Australian

Synchrotron in Clayton. This

facility is a particle accelerator,

which speeds electrons up to close

to the speed of light. This enables

research to be done using x-rays

into fields as diverse as art

history, agriculture, medicine, and

pharmaceuticals.

Students took a tour of the facilities, and also

conducted three laboratory experiments related to

their Unit 4 studies into the nature of light.

VET Sport and Recreation update By Charlotte Kidd & Laura MacLeod-Smith

In VET Sport and Recreation this year the class have been involved in a variety of activities, some of which included: lawn bowls, working with the grades 3 & 4 students, completing a first aid course and visiting the local Leisure Centre. These activities have helped us to work with a variety of people within our community, as well as showing us what roads our sport and recreation class could lead us to in the future.

Lawn bowls got our class involved with members of the local community that perhaps we may not have got to meet if not for this course. It also taught us new skills and the rules of the game.

Running an activity session with the grades 3 & 4 taught us valuable leadership skills and how to work with younger people effectively. It also helped us develop our planning and organisational skills.

First aid is a vital part of our learning; it ensures that we are able to respond effectively in an emergency situation and that we can administer CPR if needed. We were also taught how to use a defibrillator and how to properly inject an epi-pen.

Our visit to the Leisure Centre not only taught us about the types of jobs available in the sport and recreation industry, but gave us an opportunity to trial some of the services offered there, such as: metafit, boxing, boot camp and spin cycling.

It has been interesting to get involved in a range of non-traditional sports as well, most of which we had never heard of. These sports included: Korfball, Pickle-ball, Speed-Minton, Frisbee Golf and Gaelic Football.

We are looking forward to our end of year excursion to MSAC where we can tour the facility and get involved in a variety of their sports programs.

We are extremely grateful that we were given this chance to educate

ourselves further about the sport and recreation industry

and would like to thank all the people in our community that

provided us with this opportunity.

SEYMOUR COLLEGE PRIMARY COLOUR RUN

Less than One week to go until our P-6 School Colour Run on Monday 16th September, starting at 2:00pm on the oval. It has been great to see so many students using the schoolfundraising.com.au to get the most out of this fundraiser.

Just a reminder that students will need to wear a light colour t-shirt other than their uniform, which can get colour on it. Colour may stain this t-shirt so make sure it is an old one.

Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can also join in on the fun! We’d love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Colour Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact us on the details below.

We’ve set our money due back date as Friday 20th September so please make sure you’ve

returned all your money by then.

If you have any questions or issues with online fundraising, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist!

I am looking forward to seeing you there. Leah Saunders Physical Education Primary School Teacher Phone: 5771 1300
