Sewing Pattern for Sweater & Hat (For 18” Dolls)

18” Doll Sweater

To make the sweater you will need the following:

* A felted wool sweater or good quality polar fleece. Many wool sweaters can be found

at thrift stores, Goodwill or garage sales. Just make sure that the sweater is a minimum of 80% pure

wool. (It may also be labeled on the tag as merino or lambswool. Angora will also work.) If you

cannot find any sweaters to cut up, polar fleece is a good substitute. To felt the sweater, simply wash

it in the washing machine on hot and then dry in the dryer.

* 3 or 4 snaps. How many you decide to put is purely a matter of preference.

* 3 or 4 small buttons. Dig through your button jar and use whatever you like.

* 1-½ yards of small lace or trim, if desired.

* Thread to match

1. After felting your wool sweater, pin your pattern piece to the fabric. If you like the design at the

bottom of the felted wool sweater, you can place the pattern pieces so that the base of the pattern

lines up with the base of the sweater you are cutting. Cut out the doll sweater pieces making sure

that you cut one on a fold for the doll sweater back and cut two for the front.

2. With right sides together, lay one of the front sections over the back piece. Pin in place, if desired.

Stitch across top of are first. (See figure 1)

3. If you would like to add trim, such as ribbon or lace, to your sweater, go to step 4. If you do not

wish to add any trim, skip to step 5.

4. If you would like to add trim to the doll

sweater, open the end of the sleeve and

stitch the ribbon or lace to the edge of

the right side of the sleeve. (See figure 2)

Try to keep the seam allowance open

while stitching across it.

4. Now, place right sides together again, and stitch under the arm and down the side of the sweater.

(See figure 3) Repeat with the other front piece on the other side of the sweater.

5. Turn the sweater over so that the right side is facing out. Add lace or trim to remaining edges if

desired. Now, sew snaps onto the sweater according to the snap placement circles on the pattern, or

where ever you would like them. Just make sure to position them at least ¼” from the edges of

the sweater. For a final touch, carefully sew a button over each of the snaps on the outside of the

sweater. (See figure 4)

Instructions for Doll Hat to go with Sweater

To make the hat you will need the following:

•••• A felted wool sweater or good quality polar fleece. (See Sweater Directions for more info.)

• Thread to match

1. To make the matching hat for your doll, you will need to

cut a piece of felted wool or polar fleece into a rectangle

5 ¼” high and 12” long. You can also simply cut a 5 ¼”

section out of the arm of the felted sweater. (See figure 5)

make sure that the arm of the sweater is about (1/4” larger

or smaller will not make much difference if the felt is nice

and stretchy.) 6” across at the widest point. If your section

is slightly smaller at one end, (because the sleeve was tapered)

simply use the small end for the hat top and the larger end

for the hat base.

2. Once you have cut the 5 ¼ ” x 12” piece of felted wool or

fleece, (This step does not apply if you have cut out a

5 ¼” tall section from the arm of the sweater.) fold it over

so that you have a rectangle 5 ¼” tall and 6” wide. Stitch

across the end of the rectangle using a ¼” seam allowance.

3. Next, position the seam that you just stitched (or, if

you cut a section from the arm, it will be the original

seam from the sweater) in the center of the rectangle.

(See figure 7) Now, sew a ¼” seam across the top of

the rectangle. Again, try to keep the seam allowance

open while stitching across it. (Make sure to stitch

across the smaller end if you cut a section from a

tapered sleeve.)

3. Lastly, simply turn the hat over (with the right sides out), and turn up a small (about ¾”) amount

of fabric for a brim. (The side with the seam is the back of the hat.) (See figure 8)
