Xavier is one of the 28 Jesuit schools, as are fellow Atlantic 10 Conference members Fordham, Saint Joseph’s and Saint Louis. For more informa-tion on this effort, please log on to:www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketballThe nationwide Jesuit Basketball Spotlightproject highlights games this season between men’s and women’s teams from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States. Each of the 28 is dedicat-ed to strong academics and teaching womenand men to serve others and live a faith thatdoes justice. Jesuit, Catholic colleges anduniversities in the United States have morethan 200,000 students currently and morethan 1.7 million living alumni. The Jesuit ed-ucational mission began in Europe approxi-mately 500 years ago. The JBS is an effort to promote the values of Jesuit higher educa-tion through men’s and women’s basketball games played between Jesuit opponents.

THE XAVIER-SAINT JOSEPH’S SERIES: Saint Joseph’s leads the series 21-19, although Xavier has won the last four meetings. Xavier won 68-55 last season at Cintas Center (1-18-12) and 74-54 two years ago at Saint Joseph’s (2-16-11).

FOR THE RECORD (SAINT JOSEPH’S): Saint Joseph’s, 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, was picked as the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10 Conference by the A-10 coaches and media.

FOR THE RECORD (XAVIER): Xavier, 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 Confer-ence, had its four-game winning streak snapped at Charlotte on Wednesday, 63-57. Xavier was led by senior Travis Taylor, who had a double-double with a game-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds and three steals despite being limited to 25 minutes by foul trouble. Freshman Semaj Christon tied for game-high scoring honors with 18 points to go with three steals. Xavier con-trolled the early part of the game, opening

up a six-point, 15-9 lead with under eight minutes left in the half behind eight points from Taylor. When Taylor had to go to the bench with his second foul at the 7:44 mark, the momentum swung to the home team. Charlotte outscored XU 19-12 the rest of the half with Taylor out of the game. The lead went back and forth in the early stages of the second half. XU took what proved to be its last lead of the game at 37-36 on a driv-ing layup by Christon with 14:44 left. Xavier dominated two important categories, win-ning the rebounding battle 44-33 including a 21-6 offensive rebounding advantage, and recording a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint. The home team outscored the visitors by 10 points at the free throw line thanks to 29 free throw attempts for Charlotte com-pared with nine for Xavier.

HIT THE ROAD: Xavier’s game at Saint Joseph’s is its second straight road game. Xavier played at Charlotte this past Wednes-day. The Charlotte game began a stretch of four out of five games on the road and six out of eight games on the road. Xavier’s only home game from now until Feb. 13 will be Jan. 30 vs. Dayton. XU is 2-3 in true road games this season, including wins at Purdue and St. Bonaventure and losses at Charlotte, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

ATLANTIC 10 SUCCESS STORY: Xavier has won at least a share of five of the last six Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championships. Xavier has won outright or shared nine A-10 Regular Season Championships since joining the league for the 1995-96 season. Xavier’s impressive Atlantic 10 history includes five straight A-10 Regular Season Champion-ships from 2007-11 (2011, Co-Champs in 2010, 2009, 2008 and Co-Champs in 2007), sole possession of three A-10 West Division Championships (1997 and back-to-back in 2002 and 2003), one A-10 West Co-Championship (1998) and four A-10 Tourney Championships (2006, 2004, 2002 and 1998). Xavier entered the A-10 in the 1995-96 season after 16 years as a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League).

SETTING THE PACE IN ATLANTIC 10 ACTION: Xavier, which is in its 18th season in the Atlantic 10 Conference, has compiled a 204-73 (.736) record in Atlantic 10 Conference regular season action so far. XU’s winning percentage (.736) is second only to Temple among current A-10 members. Temple is at .740 (367-129 in 31 seasons). All other cur-rent A-10 teams that have played a full A-10 season are under 60 percent.

XAVIER HAS BEEN DEFENSIVE: Xavier ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in field goal percentage defense (.408), 3-point field goal percentage defense (.303), and scoring defense (60.8 ppg.). Xavier, which has held nine opponents under 40 percent this sea-son, has only allowed four teams to shoot 45 percent or more (Charlotte, Pacific, Drexel and St. Bonaventure).

SECOND HALF HAS BEEN KEY: Xavier has led in the second half of all but one game this season. XU was tied well into the second half of that game (Pacific).

CLOSE CALLS: Xavier has already played 14 games that have been decided by seven points or less, compiling an 8-6 record in those games. Nine of those games have been decided by five points or less, including an overtime game.

BALANCING ACT: Xavier’s balanced attack has two players averaging in double figures in scoring. Three of the top five scorers are freshmen or sophomores: freshman Semaj Christon (14.9 ppg.), senior Travis Taylor (11.6 ppg.), sophomore Dee Davis (8.9 ppg.), senior Brad Redford (8.5 ppg.) and sopho-more Justin Martin (8.2 ppg.).

SPREADING THE SHOTS AROUND: Freshman Semaj Christon leads Xavier with 11.5 shots taken per game followed by senior Travis Taylor (8.5), sophomore Justin Martin (6.8), sophomore Dee Davis (6.8), and senior Brad Redford (6.1).

STILL SHOOTING FOR IMPROVEMENT: Xavier, which shot 57.8 percent from the field (its second-highest mark of the season) on Jan. 19 against La Salle, is shooting an Atlantic 10-best 46.7 percent as a team for the season. Senior Travis Taylor has led the way at 54.2 percent (83-of-153), which ranks eighth in the A-10.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Xavier has no start-ers and only five letterwinners back from last season’s Sweet 16 team. Three seniors are being counted on for leadership of this year’s squad, including forwards Travis Taylor and Jeff Robinson and guard Brad Redford, and all three have been major con-tributors so far. The trio has combined to contribute 27.5 points and 14.1 rebounds.

TAYLOR MADE FOR THE PAINT: Senior Travis Taylor recorded his sixth double-double in scoring-rebounding with 18 points and 11 rebounds at Charlotte on Jan. 23; he also recorded double-doubles against Fairleigh Dickinson, Wofford, Cincinnati,

Wake Forest and Temple. He has grabbed double-figure rebounds eight times this season, including a game-high and career-high tying 12 against La Salle on Jan. 19. He had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with a career-high six assists on Jan. 12 vs. George Washington. For the season, Taylor leads Xavier in rebounding and is fourth in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 8.2 rpg. He has averaged 10.2 rpg. in Atlantic 10 play so far. Taylor is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg. after scoring double figures in seven of the last nine games, including 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting at Wake Forest on Jan. 2 and a career-high tying 20 points in the Wofford game on Dec. 22. Taylor leads the team and is ranked eighth in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage at 54.2 percent. Taylor, who scored a team-high 15 points in the Vanderbilt game on Dec. 6, recorded a double-double with 20 points (hitting 7-of-9 from the field) and 12 rebounds in Xavier’s season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9. His 20 points are a Xavier career high and his 12 rebounds tied his career high.

TAYLOR HAS OVER 1,000 COLLEGIATE POINTS: Senior Travis Taylor scored 15 points against Butler on Nov. 13 and passed the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career. Taylor now has 1,183 career points, including 812 at Monmouth University and 371 points so far at Xavier.

CHRISTON EARNS ATLANTIC 10 ROOKIE HONOR FOR A FOURTH TIME: Freshman Semaj Christon was named Atlantic 10 Con-ference Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and the fourth time this sea-son after averaging 18.5 points, 7.5 assists and 2.0 steals in wins at St. Bonaventure (Jan. 16) and vs. La Salle (Jan. 19). Christon had his first career double-double 19 points and 10 assists at St. Bonaventure. Christon, who scored 15 second-half points, hit an off-balance bank shot with five seconds left that proved to be the game-winner. He hit 8-of-11 from the field en route to 18 points to go with five assists in the La Salle win. A-10 Award selection No. 3: 18.5 ppg. and 4.5 apg. for XU’s wins over Temple (Jan. 10) and George Washington (Jan. 12) to open the Atlantic 10 season. A-10 Award selection No. 2: Christon had a tremendous game on Dec. 1 at Purdue in his first true road game as a Musketeer. Christon had a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line to go with four assists, four rebounds and three steals. A-10 Award selection No. 1: Christon averaged 19.0 points, 6.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and

1.0 steals for Xavier’s three games in the DIRECTV Classic (Pacific, Drexel and Drake) from Nov. 22-25 in Anaheim, Calif., which also earned him a spot on the DIRECTV Classic All-Tournament Team. Christon was a preseason A-10 All-Rookie Team selection by the coaches and media.

IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE: Freshman Semaj Christon leads Xavier in scoring at 14.9 ppg. (10th overall and first among freshmen in the Atlantic 10), assists at 4.9 apg. (fourth overall and second among freshmen in the A-10) and steals at 1.6 spg. (12th overall and second among freshmen in the A-10). Chris-ton, a four-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week selection, has earned plenty of praise. “Semaj Christon is the best freshman point guard I’ve seen this season,” said ESPN’s Mark Adams. Christon is fifth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring for conference games only at 18.4 ppg.

IMPRESSIVE LIST OF XAVIER FRESHMAN STAR SCORERS: Freshman Semaj Christon, who leads Xavier in scoring at 14.9 ppg. (10th in the Atlantic 10 overall and first among freshmen in the Atlantic 10), recorded an 18-point game on 8-of-11 shooting vs. La Salle on Jan. 16. He is bid-ding to become the first Xavier freshman to average double figures in scoring and/or the first XU freshman to lead the team in scoring since Stanley Burrell scored a team-high 12.7 ppg. in the 2004-05 season. Burrell is one of three XU freshmen that have scored in double figures over the last 15 seasons, a list that includes David West (1999-2000) and Romain Sato (2000-01).

ALSO LOOKING TO MAKE HIS MARK AMONG XAVIER ASSIST LEADERS: Fresh-man Semaj Christon leads XU and is fourth overall and second among freshmen in the Atlantic 10 in assists at 4.9 apg. Christon is bidding to become the first Xavier freshman to lead the team in assists since Dedrick Finn at 4.3 apg. in the 2002-03 season.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: Freshman Semaj Chris-ton, who sat out the first game (infection), made his debut on Nov. 13 against Butler and had a game-high eight assists. The eight assists set a new Xavier record for most assists by a freshman in his first collegiate game. For the record, the most assists on record by a Xavier freshman in his first colle-giate game was previously six. The freshman record for assists in a game is 11 by Dedrick Finn vs. Rhode Island (2-15-03) and by Michael Hawkins vs. Fordham (2-26-92).

DAVIS IS BACK: Sophomore Dee Davis returned to the lineup on Jan. 19 for the first time since the Jan. 10 Temple game and contributed a game-high seven assists to go with only one turnover. He played only 10 minutes against Temple on Jan. 10 due to a left wrist injury suffered in that game and he sat out the Jan. 12 George Washington game and the Jan. 16 game at St. Bonaven-ture. Davis is third on the team in scoring at 8.9 ppg. and is second in assists at 3.8 apg. (ninth in the Atlantic 10). Xavier is 5-1 when Davis scores in double figures. Davis earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors and also was named as one of ESPN’s “Best of the Best” Top Performers of the weekend after scoring a career-high 22 points on the strength of a career-high five 3-pointers to go with a career-high 15 assists in Xavier’s season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9. His previous highs were 10 points and six assists against Oral Roberts on Dec. 18, 2011. Davis hit 8-of-11 from the field, in-cluding 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Davis’ 15 assists set a new Xavier sophomore record and tied for the second-best assist mark by any Xavier player. The 15 assists were three shy of the school record of 18 (Keith Walker vs. Detroit in the 1979-80 season).

MARTIN IS A KEY: Sophomore Justin Martin scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the win over Temple on Jan. 10, his first double-figure scoring game since the eighth game of the season. Martin started and scored in double figures in each of the first eight games but had to sit out the Kent State game on Dec. 9 due to a concussion he suffered late in the Vanderbilt game on Dec. 6. Martin, who grabbed a game-high and career-high 12 rebounds in the game at Tennessee on Dec. 29, is fifth on the team in scoring at 8.2 ppg. and third in rebound-ing at 4.9 rpg. Martin was just one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the win over Drexel on Nov. 23. Martin led Xavier with a career-high 17 points against Robert Morris on Nov. 17 on the strength of a career-high six field goals, including a career-high four 3-pointers. Martin dished off a career-high six assists to go with 11 points and six re-bounds in Xavier’s season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9.

PHILMORE IS READY: Junior forward Isaiah Philmore made some big plays in the second half of the win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16 on his way to six points and five rebounds. Philmore, a transfer from Towson University, has played his first regular season games as at XU in the last 15 games, includ-

ing six starts. Philmore is second on the team in rebounding at 5.0 rpg. He recorded his first double-double as a Musketeer with 11 points and 10 rebounds vs. Vanderbilt on Dec. 6. Philmore had 10 points and six rebounds in the win over Drake on Nov. 25, while he contributed eight points and seven rebounds at Purdue on Dec. 1. Philmore sat out all three games of the season-opening homestand due to an oversight at Towson his freshman year with NCAA paperwork. Philmore sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

ROBINSON CAN BE A KEY: Senior Jeff Robinson came up big against La Salle on Jan. 19 with 10 points, six rebounds and a career-high three blocks. Robinson sat out the Tennessee game on Dec. 29 but has come on strong since that date. He came back at Wake Forest on Jan. 2 to contribute 10 points and six rebounds. He was back in the starting lineup vs. Temple on Jan. 10, contributing six points, seven rebounds and two steals and then scored 14 points to go with six rebounds and two steals in the GW win on Jan. 12. Robinson is sixth on the team in scoring (7.4 ppg.) and is fourth in rebounding (4.7 rpg.). Robinson scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in the Drexel win on Nov. 23. Robinson came back to score 13 points (all in the second half, while hitting all five of his second-half shots) and grab seven rebounds (six in the second half) in the win over Drake on Nov. 25. Robinson led XU in scoring in the Butler win on Nov. 13 with 17 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals.

REDFORD HAS BEEN COMING ON STRONG: Senior Brad Redford, who has started four straight games, is fourth on the team in scoring for the season at 8.5 ppg. and has scored in double figures in three of the last four games. Redford is averaging 13.0 ppg. in Atlantic 10 Conference action (second on the team and 18th in the A-10 for confer-ence games only). Redford enjoyed a career-high 21-point game against George Wash-ington on Jan. 12. Redford hit a career-high seven 3-pointers out of eight attempts in the GW win, while sharing game-high scoring honors. He followed up the GW game with 17 points on the strength of five 3-pointers at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16 and 13 points, including three 3-pointers, against La Salle on Jan. 19. Redford had three big 3-pointers on his way to nine points in the win over Temple on Jan. 10. Redford had a 14-point game against Kent State on Dec. 9 on the strength of 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. He hit two big 3-pointers in the final

14 seconds against Wofford on Dec. 22 that brought XU back to a 55-all tie with eight seconds left.

REDFORD FINDING HIS RANGE: Senior Brad Redford has hit 19 3-pointers over the last five games combined. Redford hit a career-high seven 3-pointers out of eight attempts in the George Washington win on Jan. 12. He hit five more at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16. For the season Redford has hit 42-of-90 (.467) from 3-point range, which ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Confer-ence. He’s eighth in the A-10 in 3-point field goals made at 2.3 per game. Redford, who has 171 career 3-pointers out of 192 career field goals (89.1 percent), scored 19 points on 6-of-7 3-point shooting in Xavier’s season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9. Prior to this season, his previ-ous career scoring high was 16 points at Kansas State on Dec. 8, 2009. For the record, Redford led the Atlantic 10 Conference in 3-point percentage as a freshman (school-record 46.5 percent in the 2008-09 season) and was second in the A-10 at 42.5 percent as a sophomore in the 2009-10 season. The 2010-11 preseason is when Redford suffered his season-ending knee injury.

SCHOLARSHIP EFFORT: Junior Erik Stenger, who transferred to Xavier from Northern Kentucky University as a walk-on, has been awarded a scholarship for the 2012-13 season. Stenger, who is averaging 11.9 minutes per game, played a career-high 20 minutes at Tennessee on Dec. 29 and scored six points to go with a career-high eight rebounds. Stenger scored six points and grabbed five rebounds and blocked an XU career-high two shots against Kent State on Dec. 9. Stenger started each of the first two regular season games and the exhibition game. Stenger scored 12 points, hitting all six of his shots from the field, and grabbed four rebounds in Xavier’s season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9. Stenger also started the exhibition game against Kentucky State on Nov. 3, tying for team-high scoring honors with 12 points to go with team highs of nine rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.

WALK THIS WAY: Junior Landen Amos has become a key part of the Xavier defense. Amos, who has played in 15 games this sea-son including each of the last 13 games, has averaged 7.7 minutes per game this season, including 13.4 minutes per games in Atlantic 10 action. Amos logged a career-high 21 minutes against George Washington on

Jan. 12 and grabbed three rebounds. Amos played 16 minutes and grabbed a career-high four rebounds in the win over Temple on Jan. 10. Amos, who blocked the potential game-tying shot at the end of the St. Bo-naventure game on Jan. 16, made a couple of his biggest defensive plays of the year at the end of the win at Purdue on Dec. 1.

AN IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FOR FARR: Fresh-man James Farr hit 6-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, on his way to 14 points in his collegiate debut in the season-opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 9, while also grabbing four rebounds. Farr had three rebounds in the game at Ten-nessee on Dec. 29.

LOCAL CONNECTIONS: In addition to Xavier head coach Chris Mack, a graduate of Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High School, XU boasts two scholarship players from the area (freshman Semaj Christon from Winton Woods High School as well as junior Erik Stenger, who is from St. Xavier High School and is a transfer from Northern Kentucky University). One of the walk-ons, junior Tim Whelan, is also a St. Xavier High graduate.

PLENTY OF SUCCESS AT CINTAS CENTER: The Xavier men’s basketball team, which is in its 13th season at its beautiful on-campus home, has compiled a 169-23 (.880) record at Cintas Center. Xavier is 88-11 (.889) against Atlantic 10 teams and 81-12 (.871) against non-conference teams since Cintas Center opened for the 2000-01 season. Xavier holds a 50-1 (.980) Atlantic 10 Confer-ence record at Cintas Center since 2007. XU had a conference record 43-game A-10 home win streak snapped by Saint Louis last season (1-25-12).

FAN SUPPORT: Xavier has averaged 10,033 fans for its 192 games played so far at Cintas Center, while selling out 109 games.

RECORD-SETTING SCORING EFFORT IN THE OPENER: The 117 points scored against Fairleigh Dickinson in the season opener on Nov. 9 are a new Cintas Center record, the most points scored during Chris Mack’s ten-ure at Xavier and the most points by an XU team since XU defeated Loyola Marymount 118-113 at LMU in the 1988-89 season (1-4-89). For the record, XU was just eight points shy of the school record of 125 points vs. Florida International (1-9-88 at Schmidt Fieldhouse). The 68 points scored in the first half by Xavier mark XU’s highest total in a half since scoring 72 in that 1988 win over

FIU. In addition, the win over FDU marked Xavier’s 23rd straight season-opening win and kept XU perfect at 13-0 in season open-ers at Cintas Center.

SUPPORTING SANDY HOOK: The Xavier bas-ketball team wore special uniforms, socks and shoes for its game against Wofford Col-lege on Dec. 22 to pay tribute and to honor those that perished in the tragedy in New-town, Connecticut. The uniforms, produced by Nike, were made in the Sandy Hook School’s official colors, green and white. The name “Sandy Hook” is across the front of the jersey and the Eagle mascot is on the lower left front of the shorts. The game worn jerseys and shorts were auctioned at GoXavier.com. The auction raised $10,250 for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

SITTING OUT: Junior forward Chris Cantino, a transfer from Palm Beach State College, is only practicing with the Musketeers.

TWO MORE TALENTED RECRUITS SIGN TO PLAY FOR XAVIER: Xavier University head coach Chris Mack has received National Letters of Intent from 6-1 guard Brandon Randolph (Inglewood, Calif./Inglewood High) and 6-6 small forward Kamall Rich-ards (Henryville, Pa./South Kent). Richards transferred to the Connecticut prep school South Kent this past year after playing at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J. “Kamall is a physical wing who hates to lose, loves to win and brings more toughness to our team,” said Mack. “He has good size, an ability to shoot and will have a college-ready physique as a freshman. Brandon is an explosive guard capable of playing on and off the ball. He excels in transition and can be a lock-down defender in the future.” Randolph is a Scout.com four-star recruit, while Richards is an ESPN.com three-star recruit.

EVEN MORE HELP FOR NEXT SEASON: Matt Stainbrook, a 6-10 junior center, is sit-ting out this season after transferring from Western Michigan but is practicing with XU. Two future Musketeers are concentrat-ing on academics at XU and will join the active roster next season: Myles Davis, a 6-2 guard who played at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., in the 2011-12 season and Jalen Reynolds, a 6-9 forward who played with Semaj Christon and won a National Championship at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., in the 2011-12 season.

IMPRESSIVE GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE: The NCAA has released this year’s Gradu-ation Success Rates (GSR) for student-ath-letes in Division I athletics. Xavier has con-tinued its strong academic tradition among its student-athletes by posting a score of 97 percent, which ranked tied for 11th in the nation and was the best GSR score in the Atlantic 10 Conference. An impressive list of 14 Xavier teams out of XU’s 18 NCAA Division I sports boasted GSR scores of 100 percent, including men’s basketball. HIGHLY RANKED BY BASKETBALL TIMES: Xavier’s men’s basketball program is ranked 21st in the 2012 rankings released by Bas-ketball Times. The rankings are based on five categories: winning percentage, NBA players, federal graduation rate, U.S. News and World Report academic reputation and program cleanliness. Every five years since 1997, BT has evaluated the best NCAA pro-grams, those that have won two-thirds of their games over 10 seasons. Xavier is one of only nine schools that have qualified for the rankings project every year, a list that also includes Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Murray State, North Caro-lina and Syracuse.

NCAA SWEET SUCCESS: Xavier is one of only four teams that have made the NCAA Sweet 16 four times in the last five years (2008-12). That list includes Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina and Xavier. No team has made all of the last five Sweet 16s. Xavier is one of only eight schools that have made at least seven straight NCAA Tournament ap-pearances, including 2012: Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Marquette, Michigan State, Texas, Wisconsin and Xavier. Last season Xavier made its 11th NCAA Tournament appear-ance in the last 12 years.

11 OF THE LAST 12 NCAA TOURNAMENTS • 22 NCAA TOURNAMENTS IN LAST 30 YEARS

IMPRESSIVE RECORD UNDER MACKXavier fourth-year head coach Chris Mack has proven he is a winner. Mack, 84-37 (.694) overall and 43-10 (.811) in Atlantic 10 regular season action, stands ninth on XU’s all-time wins list behind eighth-place Bob Staak (88 wins in six seasons from 1979-85).

Mack led Xavier to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons at the helm, including the NCAA Tour-nament Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Mack led Xavier to Atlantic 10 Conference Regular Season Championships in 2010 and 2011. XU has finished in the top 25 of the Associ-ated Press and/or USA Today/ESPN Poll each of his three seasons at the helm.

Mack, who a year ago signed a contract extension at Xavier that runs through the 2017-18 season, is very familiar with the NCAA Tournament. In fact, Mack has been a part of 13 NCAA Tournaments, including two as a player and 11 on the coaching staffs at Xavier and Wake Forest.

ATLANTIC 10 COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD AND SKIP PROSSER AWARD WINNERMack, who turned 43 on Dec. 30, was selected as the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year by his fellow A-10 coaches. In addition, Mack was the recipient of the 2011 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award, which is sponsored by CollegeInsider.com. The Skip Prosser Award was established in 2008 to honor those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity off of it as well. “Chris Mack is a winner on and off the floor,” said ESPN’s Jay Bilas.

MACK MADE XAVIER HISTORY IN THE 2009-10 SEASON AS A ROOKIE HEAD COACHMack, the 2009-10 Basketball Times Rookie Coach of the Year, was 26-9 in his first season as Xavier’s head coach. He was the winningest first-year head coach in Division I for the 2009-10 season. He was the only rookie head coach to lead his team into the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Mack be-came the first Xavier head coach to guide XU to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in either his first or second season. Mack led Xavier to a 20-win season, the first time in school history that a coach has led a team to 20 wins without at least two seniors on the roster. He also accomplished that feat with no returning double-figure scorers from the 2008-09 season. In fact, Mack won 26 games, tying him for the best total ever for a Xavier rookie head coach.

XAVIER COACHING SUCCESS STORYMack is the 17th head coach in program history. Prior to being named Xavier’s head coach on April 15, 2009, Mack spent five seasons as an assistant on Sean Miller’s Xavier staff. Prior to that he was on the staff of the late Skip Prosser both at Xavier and at Wake Forest.

LEARNED UNDER PROSSER AND MILLERMack was XU’s Director of Basketball Operations from 1999-2001 under Prosser. Mack spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Wake Forest under Prosser from 2001-04. He returned to Xavier from 2004-09 as an assistant coach under Miller. During those 10 years on the Prosser and Miller staffs at Xavier and Wake, Mack coached on nine teams that made postseason play, including eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament field. Those eight NCAA teams made the NCAA Second Round three times (2002, 2003 and 2007), the NCAA Sweet 16 twice (2004 and 2009) and the NCAA Elite Eight once (2008).

XU PLAYER AND GRADUATEMack, a 1992 Xavier University graduate, is the fifth Xavier alumnus out of 17 all-time head coaches to take over the Xavier men’s basketball program. Mack was a two-time team captain as a player at Xavier under then-head coach Pete Gillen. He won an MCC Regular Season Champion-ship at 12-2 and reached the second round of the 1993 NCAA Tourna-ment. Mack was the 1987-88 Cincinnati Post Metro Player of the Year at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati before going on to start for two seasons at Evansville, winning an MCC Regular Season Championship and a trip to the second round of the 1989 NCAA Tournament as a UE fresh-man. He transferred to Xavier after his sophomore season.

BASKETBALL FAMILY MAN

Mack and his wife, Christi, have two daughters, Hailee (6) and Lainee (7). Christi has a basketball background as a collegiate standout at the Uni-versity of Dayton, the Director of Basketball Operations for XU’s women’s basketball team (2001-03) and more recently as the former head girls basketball coach at Cincinnati’s Colerain High School.

Game #1

Fairleigh Dickinson 75Xavier 117Friday, November 9, 2012

Cintas Center

Xavier enjoyed a record-setting 117-75 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the regular season opener at Cintas Center. XU raced out to a 68-32 halftime lead, hitting 70.6 percent from the field in the first half. The Musketeers broke open a tight game early in the first half with a 30-6 run over about seven minutes, to take a 42-19 lead with 8:28 remaining. Senior Brad Redford, who finished with a career-high 19 points, came off the bench to spark Xavier with 13 points during the run on four three-pointers and a free throw. Seven Musketeers in all reached double figures, including sophomore Dee Davis with a career-high 22 points to go with a career-high and Xavier sopho-more record 15 assists. Senior Travis Taylor contributed a double-double with Xavier career highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jeff Robinson (16), freshman James Farr (14), junior Erik Stenger (12) and sophomore Justin Martin (11) also reached double figures. This marked the first time Xavier has placed seven players in double figures in scoring since the 2007-08 season against Virginia at Cintas Center (1-3-08). Xavier dominated the rebounding 41-11. The 117 points scored against Fairleigh Dickinson are a new Cintas Center record, the most points scored during Chris Mack’s tenure at Xavier and the most points by an XU team since XU defeated Loyola Marymount 118-113 at LMU in the 1988-89 season (1-4-89). For the record, XU was just eight points shy of the school record of 125 points vs. Florida International (1-9-88 at Schmidt Fieldhouse). The 68 points scored in the first half by Xavier mark XU’s highest total in a half since scoring 72 in that 1988 win over FIU. Xavier won its 23rd straight season opener and remained perfect at 13-0 in season openers at Cintas Center.

Game #2

Butler 47Xavier 62Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Cintas Center

Xavier recorded an impressive win over Butler as part of ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon. Seniors Jeff Robinson and Travis Taylor combined for 32 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Musketeers. Taylor passed the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career during his 15-point, nine-rebound effort. Freshman Semaj Christon, who missed the first game due to an infection, made his collegiate debut and dished off eight assists. Sophomore Dee Davis led the XU defense that held Butler to 36.5 percent shooting, including 25 percent in the second half. The Musketeers held Butler to 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) shooting from the field in their first 10 possessions in the second half. With the score tied 9-9 with 13:23 to go in the first half, Xavier went on a 12-2 run to go up 21-11 with 10:01 left. Robinson and Davis led the way with five points each during the run. Butler chipped away at the lead and trailed by seven points, 36-29, at halftime. After Butler narrowed the margin to 36-32 at the 17:59 mark of the second half, Xavier outscored the Bulldogs 10-1 to push the lead to 46-33 with 12:12 remaining. Robinson, who finished with a game-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds, hit a jumper with 5:28 left that extended the Xavier lead to 20 points at 57-37. This game was played as a non-conference tilt despite the fact that both schools are now in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The two teams will meet again Saturday, March 9 at Hinkle Fieldhouse and that game will be an Atlantic 10 Conference contest.

Game #3

Robert Morris 59Xavier 61Saturday, November 17, 2012

Cintas Center

Xavier escaped with the two-point win over Robert Morris that completed a sweep of the season-opening three-game homestand. Sophomore Justin Martin, who was the only Xavier player who scored in double figures in all three games of the homestand, led XU with a career-high 17 points on the strength of a career-high four 3-pointers. Sophomore Dee Davis had 15 points, while fresh-man Semaj Christon made his first collegiate start and contributed 12 points and six assists. Senior Brad Redford scored his only two points on a pair of clutch free throws with 37 seconds left that broke a 59-all tie and proved to be the game-winners. Both teams were hot to start the game as they connected on all six 3-point attempts. XU was 2-for-2 from the long range while RMU was a perfect 4-for-4. Xavier used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take a 26-19 lead with 8:31 left before intermission. The Colonials cut the lead down to 32-31 with under a minute left but a Davis free throw followed later by a Davis’ 3-pointer at the buzzer gave XU a 36-31 halftime lead. Robert Morris scored the first four points of the second half, cutting the lead to 36-35 with under 18 minutes left. Then the Musketeers answered with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 43-35 with 15:51 left but the visitors wouldn’t go away quietly. Robert Morris came all the way back and eventually forced a pair of ties, the last of which came at 59-all thanks to a jumper by RMU’s Velton Jones. XU’s defense held Robert Morris scoreless the rest of the game. In fact, Redford’s two free throws proved to be the only points by either team in the final 1:50 of action.

Game #4

Pacific 70 Xavier 67Thursday, November 22, 2012

DIRECTV Classic

Anaheim Convention Center (Anaheim, Calif.)

Xavier jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead at the start of its first round game against Pacific in the DIRECTV Classic and it looked like the Musketeers and freshman Semaj Christon were going to enjoy a big afternoon. Christon had six of Xavier’s nine points at the start. Pacific answered, though, with a pair of 3-pointers to fuel a 12-2 run over a six-minute stretch that gave the Tigers a 12-11 lead with 9:54 left in the half. Pacific built the lead up to six points, 28-22, by the time the two teams reached the four-minute mark. XU closed the gap to two points, 32-30, at intermission thanks to a 3-pointer by sophomore Dee Davis with 22 seconds left. Xavier came back to tie the score four times in the first four minutes of the second half, the last time coming at 38-all following a re-sounding dunk by senior Jeff Robinson. The Musketeers never grabbed the lead back in the second half, mainly due to defensive struggles. Pacific controlled the next seven minutes, outscoring Xavier 18-8 and grabbing a 56-46 lead with under nine minutes left in the game. The second half got away from XU because it allowed 70.8 percent shoot-ing from the field in the second half, preventing any realistic chance of a Xavier comeback. The Musketeers battled back to within three points twice in the final two minutes but could get no closer. A desperation 3-point attempt by Davis at the buzzer was off the mark. Christon led all scorers with a career-high 18 points, while also dishing off a game-high six assists. Davis contributed 14 points, senior Travis Taylor had 13 and sophomore Justin Martin scored 11.

Xavier bounced back from a disappointing first-round loss to Pacific with a win over Drexel. Freshman Semaj Christon led four Mus-keteers in double figures in scoring with a career-high 23 points to go with a game-high six assists. He got plenty of help from his teammates, especially sophomore Justin Martin, who was just one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Drexel jumped out to a six-point, 18-12, lead with 6:33 left in the first half. Xavier charged back behind 3-pointers from seniors Brad Redford and Jeff Robinson during a 10-2 run, taking a 22-20 advantage into the under-four-minute media timeout. Drexel bounced back to take a 27-26 halftime lead. Xavier started the second half quickly with a 9-2 run to take a 35-29 lead with 16:31 left. Xavier extended its lead to nine points, 48-39, with 10:30 left following a Robinson layup but Drexel would not go away quietly thanks to its seven second-half 3-pointers. The Dragons got within a point at 54-53 with six minutes remaining but never grabbed the lead. XU extended the lead back to seven points, 62-55, with 3:53 left but one more time Drexel fought back to within a point, 66-65 with 1:23 left. XU never relinquished its lead, though. In fact, after a Christon layup that put XU ahead 28-27 at the start of the second half, the Musketeers led the rest of the game. XU won the rebound-ing battle against a very good rebounding team, 27-19. Both teams shot the ball well. Drexel hit 54.5 percent from the field, including 63.6 percent in the second half. XU shot 51.1 percent.

Game #6

DIRECTV Classic

Anaheim Convention Center (Anaheim, Calif.)

Xavier captured a win over Drake to complete a 2-1 record at the DIRECTV Classic. The Musketeers jumped out to an early 12-4 lead after six minutes of action but it didn’t last long. Drake outscored Xavier 17-8 over the next seven minutes to grab a 21-20 lead at the seven-minute mark and took a 30-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. Xavier trailed Drake 36-33 with under 15 minutes left but used an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take over the lead at 44-36 entering the under-12-minute media timeout. XU led the rest of the game and led by double digits with under two minutes left. Drake 3-pointers helped trim the score to a smaller margin but the Bulldogs never seriously threatened in the closing minutes. Freshman Semaj Christon, who was named to the DIRECTV Clas-sic All-Tournament Team, led five Musketeers in double figures in scoring with 16 points to go with a game-high seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore Justin Martin had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior Jeff Robinson contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. All of Robinson’s points and all but one rebound came in the second half. Sophomore Dee Davis contributed 15 points, while junior Isaiah Philmore reached double figures for the first time in a Xavier uniform, tallying 10 points to go with six rebounds. Drake tried to stay close with long range bombs, hitting 11-of-28 for the game. Seven of its 3-pointers came in the second half.

Freshman Semaj Christon scored a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Xavier in his first true road game as a Musketeer. Sophomore Justin Martin also scored double figures with 12 points. Those efforts and a stingy XU defense helped offset a 44-29 Purdue advantage in rebound-ing. The Musketeer defense held Purdue to 35 percent shooting for the game, including 0 percent (0-of-17) from 3-point range. Xavier jumped out quickly to an 11-2 lead after six minutes. After a Purdue timeout, the Boilermakers answered with a 15-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 17-13 lead with a little over eight minutes left before halftime. Xavier controlled the next five minutes 13-6 to earn a 26-23 lead with under three minutes left before intermission. Then PU answered with a 6-0 spurt to end the half and take a 29-26 halftime lead. The Boilermakers stretched the lead to five points, 31-26, by scoring the first basket of the second half. Martin capped off an 8-0 run by the Musketeers with an old-fashioned three-point play that gave Xavier a 34-31 lead with 17:39 left. Purdue fought back to take the lead and still led 46-44 with nine minutes left in the game. That’s when XU took control of the game for good over the next five minutes with another 8-0 run, including five points from Christon and a 3-pointer from senior Brad Redford, giving XU a 52-46 lead with under four minutes left. XU led the rest of the game. Xavier’s win this past Saturday at Purdue was Xavier’s seventh straight win over five different teams from the Big Ten (a streak that includes Purdue three times, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa).

Game #8

Vanderbilt 66Xavier 64 OT

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Cintas Center

Xavier lost to Vanderbilt in overtime despite holding a 13-point second-half lead. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak. Xavier carved out a 33-27 halftime lead and got out of the gate quickly in the second half. In fact, Xavier scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 40-27 lead with 17:08 to go in regulation. Senior Travis Taylor, who scored a team-high 15 points on the night, scored all seven Muske-teer points during the run. Vanderbilt would not go away, though. The Commodores trailed 43-30 at the 15:21 mark but responded with a 10-0 run to cut the Musketeers’ lead to 43-40 with 11:51 left in regulation. Xavier answered with two baskets from freshman Semaj Christon to stretch its lead back to seven, 47-40, with 10:45 left. Vanderbilt fought back with a 7-0 run of its own to deadlock the score at 47-all with 8:39 remaining. Then back-to-back baskets by junior Isaiah Philmore and Taylor helped push XU back into the lead at 54-49 with 5:21 left. Vanderbilt answered with a 5-0 run to end regulation and send it into overtime at 54-all. Xavier took its last lead of the game at 60-59 on a pair of Philmore free throws with under two minutes left. A 5-0 Vander-bilt spurt put the visitors ahead for good at 64-60. Four Musketeers scored in double figures, including Taylor (15), sophomore Justin Martin (13), Christon (12), and Philmore (11). Philmore, who made his first start as a Musketeer, scored an XU career-high 11 points and pulled down an XU career-high 10 rebounds (six on the offensive glass) for his first double-double at Xavier. The loss snapped Xavier’s seven-game home winning streak at Cintas Center. XU, which entered the game shooting 77 percent from the free-throw line, shot a disappointing 52.9 percent (9-of-17) in the loss. In addition, the perimeter defense that held Purdue without a 3-pointer in its previous game on Dec. 1 allowed nine Vander-bilt 3-pointers.

Xavier overcame a 9-0 hole at the start of the game and a sluggish first half offensively to capture a seven-point victory thanks to a 44-point second half. Xavier’s defensive effort helped it bounce back in the first half, closing the gap to 20-18 at halftime. In fact, Xavier’s defense was strong the entire game, holding Kent State to 32.3 percent shooting from the field. Xavier’s offense began to click in the second half. With the score tied at 33-all with 11:41 left in the game, Xavier put together a 12-0 run to take control of the game at 45-33 with 8:49 remaining. Sophomore Dee Davis, who scored 10 points on the day, scored five of XU’s 12 points during the run. Senior Brad Redford was a big part of the second-half surge as well. Redford scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, hitting three of his four 3-pointers after intermission. One of the treys and an assist came during that key 12-0 run. Freshman Semaj Christon scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Musketeers, while senior Travis Taylor contributed eight points and nine rebounds. One of the key members of the Musketeer defense was junior walk-on Landen Amos, who logged a career-high 13 minutes. Xavier played the game without its second-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder, sophomore Justin Martin, who sat out the game after suffering a concussion late in the Vanderbilt game on Dec. 6. Junior Erik Stenger contributed a career-high five rebounds to go with six points and a career-high two blocks. The win marked Xavier’s seventh in a row over Kent State and Xavier’s 10th win in its last 11 games against teams from the Mid-American Conference.

Game #10

Xavier 45No. 11 Cincinnati 60Wednesday, December 19, 2012

U.S. Bank Arena (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Xavier lost to No. 11 Cincinnati in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic at U.S. Bank Arena. This marked the first time the annual rivalry game had been played at a neutral site since the 1986-87 season. Senior Travis Taylor, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, was the only Musketeer double-figure scorer. Xavier enjoyed its largest lead of the game in the first half at 16-11 with 10:55 to go before halftime thanks to a 6-0 run that was capped off by a deep 3-pointer by senior Brad Redford. Xavier’s defense was a big reason why it forged a 24-22 halftime lead despite a 0-of-6 performance at the free-throw line. The second half was a different story. A 17-4 run by UC over the first seven minutes of the second half proved to be the game-changer. XU leading scorer, freshman Semaj Christon, logged only five minutes in the second half due to cramps. Cincinnati led by 13 with 10:12 remaining, but the short-handed Musketeers mounted a 10-5 run to cut the Bearcat advantage to 48-40 with 6:23 left. Junior Isaiah Philmore sparked the spurt with four of Xavier’s 10 points during the run. Xavier closed out the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range, and a disappointing 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the free throw line. Xavier’s defense held Cin-cinnati to 32.8 percent (21-of-64) shooting for the game, including 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range. Xavier outscored Cincin-nati in the paint 24-22 but the Bearcats won the rebounding battle 47-37, including grabbing a total of 20 offensive rebounds. UC’s win was just its second in the last six meetings with Xavier.

Xavier dropped its second straight game, a 56-55 heartbreaker. Senior Travis Taylor led Xavier with a double-double for the second straight game. Taylor tied his XU career high for scoring with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. Taylor played a big role in helping XU forge a 34-22 halftime lead, scoring 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting before halftime. As a team Xavier shot 58.3 percent in the first half compared with 38.1 percent by Wofford. Unfortunately for Xavier, this game turned out to be a tale of two halves. While Xavier’s defense continued to control Wofford, holding the Terriers to 34.6 percent second-half shooting, the Xavier offense went cold. XU shot just 36.4 percent from the field and scored just 21 points after intermission. Wof-ford put together an 18-6 run to start the second half, erasing the 12-point Musketeer lead and tying the score at 40-all with 12:59 left. Xavier built a three-point lead at 47-44 on the strength of three points from Taylor. Wofford answered with a 7-0 run to grab the lead back at 51-47 with under two minutes left. The Terriers still led 53-49 until senior Brad Redford hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to draw XU within a point at 53-52. A pair of Wofford free throws raised the visitors’ advantage back to three points at 55-52 but Redford answered again with a deep, contested 3-pointer to tie the score at 55-all with eight seconds left. An unfortunate XU foul al-lowed Wofford to score what proved to be the game-winning point on a free throw with seven seconds left. The Musketeers were called for an offensive foul before getting off the potential game-winning shot. Xavier wore specially made Nike uniforms in honor of Sandy Hook Elementary, which used the school’s name, colors and logo.

Game #12

Xavier 47 Tennessee 51Saturday, December 29, 2012Thompson-Boling Arena (Knoxville, Tenn.)

Xavier dropped its third straight game, 51-47, despite holding a four-point halftime lead, a 10-point lead early in the second half and putting together a dominating rebounding effort the entire night. Xavier’s stingy defense and a 29-16 first-half rebounding advantage helped Xavier carve out a 25-21 halftime lead. The Musketeers came out strong in the second half as well, scoring the first six points, including four from senior Travis Taylor, to take a 31-21 lead with under 17 minutes left. XU still led by 10 points, 33-23, with under 15 minutes left before the Musketeer offense went cold and Tennes-see came alive. The Vols put together a 19-3 run over the next 10 minutes to grab a 42-36 lead with 5:42 left. The Musketeers were held without a field goal for over 10 minutes. With UT leading 44-38 with under five minutes left, XU scored five straight points, includ-ing an old-fashioned 3-point play from sophomore Dee Davis, to pull within a point at 44-43 with a little more than two minutes left. The Musketeers were never able to regain the lead in the closing minutes. Taylor led Xavier in scoring with 12 points to go with seven rebounds. While Taylor was the only XU double-figure scorer, sophomore Justin Martin grabbed a game-high and career-high 12 rebounds to go with his six points. Martin was a big part of a dominating rebounding effort that saw XU win the battle of the backboards 44-28, including a 17-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Davis finished with seven points, six assists, three steals and just one turnover. Unfortunately, the Musketeers turned the ball over a season-high 19 times as a team. Xavier shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the field, including a season-low 12.5 percent from 3-point territory.

Xavier battled back from an 11-point second-half deficit to take the lead but offensive droughts doomed XU to its fourth straight defeat. Xavier raced out to an 8-0 lead to start the game but Wake Forest answered with an 8-0 run of its own to tie the score. In fact, Wake controlled the rest of the first half and earned a 31-26 halftime lead. Xavier stayed close in the first half thanks to the play of senior Travis Taylor, who hit 8-of-9 shots for 16 points to go with seven rebounds before the break. Senior Jeff Robinson scored the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to 31-28 with 19:45 left. Wake answered with an 11-3 run to open an 11-point, 42-31, lead with 15:22 left in the game. Xavier took control over the next nine minutes of action, outscoring the Demon Deacons 18-6 and finally grabbing the lead back at 49-48 on a Robinson jumper with 6:58 left. That’s when the XU offense went ice cold, opening the door to a 12-0 Wake run over the next four minutes, forging a 60-49 lead for the home team with 2:34 left. XU never got closer than seven points in the closing minutes. Taylor finished the game with 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, his fourth straight double figure scoring game and his third double-double in four games. Freshman Semaj Christon scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, while Robinson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench. Two big offensive statistics played a role in Xavier’s offensive woes, a season-high 20 turnovers and 1-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Wake converted 8-of-19 shots from behind the arc. This game marked Xavier’s final non-conference test before opening A-10 play against Temple on Jan. 10.

Temple 52 Xavier 57Thursday, January 10, 2013Cintas Center

Xavier broke its four-game losing streak and got its Atlantic 10 Con-ference season off to a successful start with a win over last season’s league regular season champions. Xavier controlled play for most of the first half but Temple 3-pointers and missed XU free throws kept the margin close at 29-26 at halftime. Temple hit three of its first four shots as part of a 9-0 run to start the second half as the Owls took a 35-29 lead with 17:38 left. Xavier answered with a 9-0 run of its own, including five points from sophomore Justin Martin and four from freshman Semaj Christon, to take a 38-35 lead with 14 minutes left. With Xavier leading by a single point, 38-37, with 13 minutes left, the Musketeers put together a 10-0 run fueled by a pair of 3-pointers from senior Brad Redford. XU had its largest lead at 48-37 with 8:45 left. Temple cut the lead to two twice in the final six minutes but XU was able to hold off the Owls and secure the win. Xavier really cranked up its defense to a high level after the Temple run to start the second half. XU held Temple to 23.3 percent shoot-ing (7-of-30) the final 17:37 of the game. For the game, Temple’s 33.9 percent shooting was its second-lowest of the season next to its game at Kansas and its 52 points were a season low. Xavier used balanced second-half scoring on the other end of the court in the second half. Martin (7), senior Travis Taylor (7), Christon (6), and Redford (6) made major scoring contributions after halftime. Chris-ton led Xavier in scoring for the game with 16 points, while Taylor recorded his second straight double-double and his fourth in five games with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Martin scored 10 points, his first double-figure scoring game since the eighth game of the season.

The Musketeers used 7-0 runs to start and end an impressive first-half performance and rolled to the 15-point win. Xavier, playing without its injured starting point guard Dee Davis, recorded the victory in great part thanks to the standout play of its three seniors. Senior Jeff Robinson scored 14 points to go with six rebounds and two steals, while senior Travis Taylor grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and dished off a career-high six assists to go with his six points. Freshman Semaj Christon tied Redford for game-high scoring honors with 21 points to go with seven assists. Xavier jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its way to a dominating first-half effort that led to a 15-point, 35-20, half-time lead. With Xavier leading 28-20 with 2:29 left in the first half, the Musketeers reeled off a 7-0 run to close the half. XU dominated the first-half rebounding 22-6, including a 7-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. In addition, XU shot 59.3 percent in the first half, while holding GW to 33.3 percent shooting. The Colonials chipped away and got the lead down to six points, 46-40, with nine minutes left but a Christon 3-pointer put the lead back at nine points, 49-40, with 8:35 left. The visitors never seriously threatened down the stretch. Xavier’s defense held GW to 38.6 percent shooting for the game, which marked the second straight game and the ninth game this season that XU has held an opponent under 40 percent. Despite playing without one of its primary ballhandlers, Xavier only turned the ball over 11 times for the game. Xavier has now recorded eight straight wins over George Washington.

Game #16

Xavier 66St. Bonaventure 64Wednesday, January 16, 2013Bob Lanier Court at the Reilly Center

Xavier recorded the two-point win at St. Bonaventure, playing once again without starting point guard Dee Davis. Xavier did get two great performances by two other guards. Freshman Semaj Christon led Xavier with 19 points and a career-high 10 assists, while senior Brad Redford scored 17 points on the strength of five 3-pointers. While Christon logged his first career double-double, Redford scored in double figures for a second straight game for only the second time in his career. The only other time he did it was in the first two games of his sophomore season in the 2009-10 season. Xavier led 31-27 at halftime and still led 51-47 with under seven minutes left. St. Bonaventure then took over with a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to take a 59-54 lead with 4:06 left. Xavier came out ready and answered the challenge after the under-four-minute media timeout. That’s when Christon and XU’s defense turned it up anoth-er notch. XU outscored SBU 12-5 in the final minutes. Christon, who scored 15 second-half points, scored eight of XU’s 12 points during the run, including an off-balance bank shot with five seconds left that proved to be the game-winner. One key for Xavier was its 33-23 rebounding advantage, including 16-5 edge in offensive rebounds that included huge offensive rebounds and put backs in those final four minutes by senior Travis Taylor and junior Isaiah Philmore. Taylor finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Despite playing without Davis, Xavier did a great job taking care of the ball with a season-low six turnovers. The win marked Xavier’s 12th win in the last 13 meetings with St. Bonaventure. It also got XU off to a winning start in the road portion of its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule.

Xavier overcame a slow start and recorded its fourth straight win with a 70-63 victory over La Salle in a game that was not as close in the second half as the final score might indicate. XU led by 18 points with under three minutes left before emptying the bench. Fresh-man Semaj Christon led Xavier with 18 points and five assists, while senior Brad Redford scored 13 points, marking the first time in his career he has scored in double figures in three straight games. Se-nior Travis Taylor led the rebounding efforts with a game-high and career-high tying 12 boards, while sophomore Dee Davis returned to the lineup for the first time since the Jan. 10 Temple game and contributed a game-high seven assists to go with only one turnover. La Salle controlled the first 10 minutes of the game, holding a 20-9 lead at the halfway point of the first half. It was all Xavier the rest of the afternoon. Xavier dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half 26-7, taking a 35-27 halftime lead. La Salle chipped the lead down to six points three times in the second half, the last time coming at 45-39 with 9:51 left. That’s when XU put the game away with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, extending the advantage to 54-39 with 6:49 left. XU led by 18 points, 66-48, with 2:34 left following a dunk by senior Jeff Robinson, who finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots. Xavier shot 57.8 percent from the field, its second-highest percent-age of the season. XU held La Salle to 40.0 percent shooting from the field, including 34.4 percent in the second half. Those numbers helped offset 19 XU turnovers and a 15-of-26 free throwing shooting effort.

Game #18

Xavier 57 Charlotte 63Wednesday, January 23, 2013Halton Arena (Charlotte, N.C.)

Charlotte snapped Xavier’s four-game winning streak behind bal-anced scoring with four double-figure scorers and a 50.0 percent shooting effort from the field. Xavier controlled the early part of the game, opening up a six-point, 15-9 lead with under eight minutes left in the half behind eight points from Taylor. When Taylor had to go to the bench with his second foul at the 7:44 mark, the momentum swung to the home team. Charlotte outscored XU 19-12 the rest of the half with Taylor out of the game. The lead went back and forth in the early stages of the second half. XU took what proved to be its last lead of the game at 37-36 on a driving layup by Christon with 14:44 left. The 49ers outscored the Musketeers 13-2 over the next seven minutes to take a 49-39 lead with under eight minutes left. Xavier cut the lead to four points on a couple occasions later in the game but could get no closer than that. There were 14 lead changes during the course of the game. Xavier dominated two important categories, winning the rebounding battle 44-33 including a 21-6 offensive rebounding advantage, and recording a 36-26 ad-vantage in points in the paint. The home team outscored the visitors by 10 points at the free throw line thanks to 29 free throw attempts for Charlotte compared with nine for Xavier.
