By Tim Hopgood | KS2 | £5.99 Frankie and his parents live a quiet life. But when Frankie decides to learn the trumpet, everything begins to change. “Its bright and lively illustrations appeal to a wide range of ages. It won the Booktrust Early Years Awards, but its subject matter – synaesthesia, the mixing of the senses so that sounds have colours and smells attached to them – has enormous potential for older children, too. We’re excited about using it as a creative springboard for art, poetry and music in the KS2 classroom.” Iggy Peck, Architect By Andrea Beatty, Illustrated by David Roberts | KS1 | £5.99 Iggy Peck loves to build using his imagination, and the materials around him, to recreate famous landmarks. His teacher is not impressed, until one day when Iggy’s talents as an architect save her and the class from disaster! “The humour of the story is told through simple poetic language, complemented by colourful illustrations. The text has pace and rhythm and there scope for design and technology activities, plus science and geography links. On a PSHE level the story teaches us to value each others’ talents and how to utilise them.” For more recommendations and help choosing the right books contact Lisa Moll. What were your favourite books when you were growing up? Three come to mind straight away: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Spike Milligan’s Silly Verse for Kids. Which other illustrators do you admire and why? I’m a huge fan of Janet Ahlberg’s work. I love her eye for detail, her use of colour and her sense of humour. Her work is utterly charming. What books are you currently working on? I’m working on the next Jacqueline Wilson novel which will be the third in the Hetty Feather series, a picture book for Julia Donaldson all about an orchestra of animals and one of my own novelty books which will be called Fancy Dress Jungle. Do you prefer illustrating your own books or for other people? I like the variety but my absolute favourite is to illustrate my own books. What advice do you have for aspiring illustrators? To draw from real life as well as from your imagination. It’s a vital way to improve your skills and develop your powers of observation.
