taking thee cones into the cente
and stitching them in place. The
emaining, unstitched cone is
extended to become the top point
o the naow tiangle. The opening
o the bag can be patially stitched
togethe i you want to close the
lowe section. This inceases the
capacity o the bag and also ensues
that the contents ae held moe
secuely. It can be designed as a
decoative object o display o
as a unctional containe. You could
make a medium-sized bag to hold
a sewing poject to keep you

could just as easily scale the size

as git bags o holiday season

Because the shape is so simple, you

Ou example hee uses ee appliqu
techniques with quilting, emboidey,
abic painting, and beading. The
quilting is woked by hand in a
Kantha style. This Indian technique
taditionally made use o multiple
layes o won sai and dhoti

o unning stitches, was woked
though seveal layes o sot cloth
to make a stong abic with a new
lease o useul lie. Because no batting
was involved in taditional Kantha
quilting, the stitched textile emained
incedibly sot and fuid despite the
density o the stitching. Fo ou

abic patches with a laye o net
o tulle. Be awae that the colo
o the tulle will slightly modiy
the colos o the abics beneath
it. This is a geat oppotunity o
expeimentation. You could enjoy
auditioning seveal dieent
colos o net to assess the eect
they have on the abics below.
Its also a chance to demonstate
you undestanding o colo
theoy.
n: Much like when mixing paint,
layering sheer abrics creates optical
mixes. For example, a layer o black
sheer adds depth, creating shades o
colors (such as bright red to burgundy)
and white makes pastel versions o
colors. Placing red over yellow will
result in orange, and a sheer blue
layer over yellow will appear green. With
experience it becomes easier to predict
these eects and exploit them to create
a much wider range o colors than the
original abrics would suggest i viewed
separately. The beauty othis technique is that you can keep
auditioning dierent abrics until youre
happy with the eect.
Although the top laye o tulle will4.
help in holding the patches in place,
youll need to baste though all the
layes to hold them while you quilt.
The ows o basting will need to be
spaced accoding to the size and
numbe o the abic patches used. Its impotant to secue evey patch

Keep the knots o the basting theads
on the top o the piece so that they
can be pulled out easily as the aea is

as desied. We woked ou squae
by making small unning stitches
by hand with a hand-dyed, single
stand, cotton emboidey thead
and a quiltes size-11 between
needle. The thickness o the thead
will dictate the needle size to a
lage extent, but a between needle
has a lage eye o its size and can
accommodate a thicke thead than
is conventionally used o quilting.
The density o the stitch patten is
a pesonal choice, but the close
the lines o quilting ae woked themoe textue is poduced, especially
i the stitches ae a little tighte
than the nom. We paticulaly like
the ippling textue that Kantha
quilting poduces because when we
paint the suace (ate quilting), the
paint emphasizes the textue o the
quilting.
n: When we quilt in a Kantha
style we usually space our lines around116"18" apart. I you preer to quilt by
machine, try dropping the eed dogs and
ree-motion quilting across the patches
instead.
You ee-appliqu quilted squae
