Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 4, Week 8, 8h December 2016

Dear Families,

This is a time of the year mixed with emotions. While we celebrate the closing of another school year we also say goodbye to so many staff and families and wish them well in their future journeys. Good luck Danette in your new job at Glenunga International High School. We welcome Christina Charalambous to the role of Business Manager. In the pipeline we still have two admin positions being finalised and a senior leader yet to be appointed. We are also still waiting for allocation of a number of teaching vacancies that we have and hope to have these finalised before reports go home.

Reports are coming home on Wednesday 14th December. Once again I would like to remind the community when reading reports that a ‘C’ is an appropriate standard at which a child should be achieving. A ‘C’ signifies that a student is meeting the requirements of that year level. To receive an ‘A’ or a ‘B’ a child must be achieving at a higher level than is expected. If you have any concerns with what you have read in the reports please touch base with your child’s teacher before the end of term.

Summer Celebration was another fantastic event and what a great turn out on such a warm evening. Thank you to Terence and Alison as the main organisers of this event and to the teachers and students for their well-practised and fabulous items. I think that it was the best Summer Celebration that we have ever had. The costumes, variety, props, humour and actions were superb and added immensely to the enjoyment of this event. Well done to everyone who participated! A huge thank you to those who helped pack up afterwards as well.

Waterworld was another fabulous success, as it was last year. Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who made this such a wonderful day. In particular I would like to acknowledge Jo Sayers who has been the main organiser of this event. It is not easy to organise over 750 students, 70 staff, 15 buses and volunteers, taking them on an excursion! What a busy couple of weeks it has been. Still to come this term is our year 7s graduation on Wednesday 14th December.

Thank you to parents who have replied to our parent opinion survey. This information is valued and used in the planning for the following year. Student and staff opinions are also gathered and all of these are reported on in the annual report that is tabled at the Governing Council AGM in March. Improvements to the school are important to us so please pass on your feedback at any time of the year.

At Governing Council on Monday night the following was agreed to in planning forward for next year: *School fees for 2017 will remain at $240 for the year as they were this year. *Acquaintance Night will be in week 3 term 1 on Wednesday 15th February. *AGM will be in week 4 on Monday 20th February. *Our first Pupil Free Day will be in week 6 on Friday 10th March.

I’d like to thank the Governing Council for their dedication and commitment to the school over the year. Your time and effort on behalf of the entire school community is much appreciated. Each year we like to add new members to our group so please consider joining us next year. Information will come home early next term about this process.

Schools could not operate as efficiently as they do without the good will of so many volunteers across the year. I would therefore like to say thank you to anyone who has helped in any way across the year. All support is highly valued. Your good will adds so much to the opportunities that we can provide for our students. Please note the names of our 2017 volunteers in this newsletter. A big, big thank you to you all!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all safe and happy holidays. For those families moving on from

Settlers, I wish you all the best in the future. For our year 7s remember to believe in yourselves as you begin

your next phase of schooling. For our continuing students and their families, I hope you have a wonderful festive

season and look forward to seeing you again next year.

On Wednesday 23rd of November, 2016, the Aboriginal parents

met for a morning tea at the school. It was a time to get

together, reflect on the year and talk about future learning

plans, especially establishing an Aboriginal voice for Junior and

Primary students at the school. The morning tea gave an

opportunity for Aboriginal Parents to meet with each other and

make connections within families. ‘It’s good for me to see this.

My personal gain is to see all these people here’, said Michael

Hare, father of Kyla Adams. As the Aboriginal Parents shared in

the morning tea, many wanted their Aboriginal children to join

them, so they too could make connections and celebrate their

achievements this year with their parents. More Aboriginal

parent morning teas, forums and events are planned for 2017.

It was an enjoyable experience for all!

Christmas

Floats Kookaburra students were set a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) to design and create a model of

a float for the Christmas Pageant. They were excited to share their models with their classmates and in the front office and Resource Centre.

Water World

Over 700 Settlers Farm students decended upon Water World by the bus loads on

Monday for a fatntastic day of fun in the sun. All the kids and even a few staff had a

fantastic time swimming in the different pools and many students also conquered

the slides. The day was a great success and a fantastic way to celebrate the effort

and hard work of the students over 2016.

Everything seem to come together to make 2016’s Summer

Celebration the best one yet. Perfect weather combined with a

fantastic theme that encouraged a vast variety of singing,

dancing, custumes and props. Thank you to all involved with

porformances, organisation, set up and participation. Now the

planning begins to out do it in 2017!

Settlers Farm Campus Car Boot Sale 2016 On Saturday, November 26th 2016, Settlers Farm Campus held a car boot sale. There were many items for sale such as candles, prints, Christmas gifts, toys, DVDS, various crafts, custom made wooden signs, bric-a-brac items, books, computer goods, furniture as well as ex-Settlers Farm furniture. There was a jumping castle for children and a sausage sizzle, popcorn, sweets, a cake stall and other food items such as fresh Olive Oil, tomatoes and eggs. The car boot sale drew people from the local community as well as the school community. It was a fun and enjoyable day!

Fundraising for the School’s Student Kitchen This year, the money from selling the Entertainment Books to the staff and community

went into purchasing items for our outdoor kitchen. An amazing $637 was raised. Some

kitchen appliances bought were a blender and hand mixers and some equipment

included baking trays, cooking utensils, mixing bowls and spoons, measuring scales,

chopping boards, cooking pots, strainers and dish dryers.

A huge thank you

My fourth and final year at Settlers Farm Campus is coming to an end and whilst I

haven’t been at this wonderful place for as long as others, I will take with me some very

special memories of the work we have achieved together. It has been my pleasure getting

to know your child and having your parental support that was an essential part of our

success. Whether it was the Harmony Day celebrations, the Fundraising events including

Disco’s, Car Boot Sales, Spell-a-thons or Sausage Sizzles, the good fun we had at sports

day’s with teachers versus parents relay (I’m still recovering!) or just the informal chats

I’ve had with many of you in the yard as you drop off or pick up your children - I would

like to personally thank each and every one of you, the parents, grandparents, and other

family members who have taken the time to volunteer, to work with me through tough

decisions needed to help students and in celebrating our student’s successes.

I believe the students at Settlers are full of great potential and sincerely thank you for

your support.

Each January Settlers Farm Campus OSHC holds a camp. In

2017 we will be going to West Beach Caravan Park for 3 days

and 2 nights (18th, 19th and 20th of January) The camp is open

to all children who are in years 5, 6 and 7 during 2016, even

those who do not have a current enrolment at OSHC.

The cost of the camp is a $50 deposit plus 3 days OSHC

bookings, minus any childcare benefits.

Come along and join us for Beachouse, Marion Aquatic Centre,

Surf Lifesaving, fishing and more...

Settlers Farm Campus School App

Settlers Farm Campus is pleased to announce an upgrade to our school communication services to include a free smartphone app

– School Star. School news, newsletters, event invitations, notices and general messages will now be sent through School Star.

Only Settlers Farm Campus parents and community members can access content in this highly secure app. (Parents listed as the

primary contact will have immediate access once they have downloaded the app. Secondary contacts and other

interested community members need to let the school know if they wish to download the school’s app so that they can be flagged

– this is part of the security measures.)

Keeping parents and the community informed is very important to us, and we will be regularly uploading content to School Star.

You will receive up-to-date current information, newsletters and important announcements within minutes of the school releasing

the information!

With School Star, you get the following benefits:

Receive school news immediately, via a beautiful Facebook-like news feed.

Filter your news feed to see just the news that relates to your child.

Receive important messages from the school through School Star, instead of by SMS.

Reply or send your own message to the school for free, day or night.

Once the download has finished, tap “OPEN” to launch School Star.
