Meditation:

“I am the gate, whoever enters through me will be saved”

We may be tempted to think God is absent today as we go through this experience of the unknown. There are people out there who say “Where is God? He is not helping us overcome this uncomfortable situation.” And we get mad, and we blame God for what’s happening. God does not act according to human laws and cybernetics. Anytime we have a question, we ask Google and we get an answer as if by magic. Little by little we are learning that this pandemic is a lesson that opens up a new way of life. We don’t know what that new reality will be like. Truth is, we are leaving behind what used to be normal, and learning a new normal. Things will not be the same. We are in a moment of transition, and still we ask ourselves: where is God? Is He present here or not? Of course He is present, like He has been in the past. The most tangible event was the coming of Jesus into this world. This was the way for God to be present with His plan of salvation and insert it into the history of human civilization. Christianity is God’s proposal to the world. It affects all aspects of life, not just the spiritual aspect. God wants to save the whole person, body and soul.

In the gospel we hear Jesus say, "I am the gate, whoever enters through me will be saved." Since the Resurrection of Jesus, millions of people in the world recognize Jesus as the Son of God who has come to the world to rescue us from darkness and sin, offering us another alternative of life. It is a new life, which is lived with the help of the Spirit of God. Presented with this approach to life there are those who reject it because it is uncertain, not known; and the world of today mistrusts the unknown.

How important it is today to stand firm in our Christian faith. There is a danger of abandoning it because we don’t see quick answers to the situation we are experiencing. It would be sad to abandon the faith that we have developed for many years and in a couple of months leave it because it does not fulfill its objective. Faith, above all, is a gift from God. Therefore, faith enables us to accept realities for which reason has no answers. Faith in God is the capacity that moves us to discover the meaning of life, its purpose and its mission; to discover the reason we are in this world, what we must do and what mission we have to carry out. These are questions that make us think critically, in the most positive sense.

Faith lived moved by the Spirit of God enriches human life; it gives human life its spiritual dimension. The spiritual life is the new life that God offers. The early Christians accepted this life, and thanks to their testimony, the seed of their faith grew, and it continues to grow today. It is the experience that we hear about in the Acts of the Apostles. On the same day of Pentecost, the first Christian community experienced the power of the Holy Spirit that transformed

their lives, filling them with joy and ridding them of fear. Peter speaks to the people of Israel saying, “Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." These words filled with the Holy Spirit reached the hearts of the listeners who replied, "What are we to do, my brothers?" Peter gives them the formula, ”Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” If we have already been baptized, we have already received the Holy Spirit, then why do we not see Him act in us? Why is He not evident in us? This should make us question ourselves and should move us to find the answer to these questions. The answer is simple: living in the Spirit of God is grace, it is a gift from God. We have to ask for this grace, because the promises of God are valid for everyone.

If Jesus is the gate of salvation, that is, of new life, we need to ask for the grace of a personal encounter with Him. We need to tell him, Lord, I want to live in the power of your Holy Spirit like the first community did, I want to place myself in safety, away from this corrupted world, I want to live the life of the Spirit and enter into an experience of intimate communion with you today and always.

My brothers and sisters, let us ask the Holy Spirit to come and act not only in us and our family, but in all the people in the whole world, including civic rulers, professionals, scientists; all people in a position of leadership. We all need the new life that God offers through his beloved Son, Jesus Christ. We are in need of a Pentecost that transforms the lives of all human beings in the world. How beautiful it would be to see all humanity living the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

May we meditate on Jesus the Gate to enter the heart of God through prayer, silence and contemplation this week. And may this lead us to realize that we too are a gate for others to enter and find God in our hearts. Do I let my brothers and sisters enter my heart, or do I close it up so that nobody can enter, and nobody bothers me? The lesson that God is giving us in this time of pandemic is precisely to let others enter our hearts. We had closed them up and we were disconnected from each other. This is a time of grace and blessing. Let us stand firm in the faith and in the experience of the Holy Spirit who guides us to be a gate for others and to enrich ourselves with their life experience and spiritual gifts.

Let us ask Mary Most Holy that, through her intercession, we may receive the grace to be gates in union with Jesus Christ for the glory and honor of God the Father. Amen.

Fr Jose Ugalde, MSpS

If you are planning to move out of the area before August 1, please let me know and I can create a letter for you to give to your new parish so that your child may make their First Holy Communion there. Please know we are looking at dates and as soon as possible we will let you know. Thank you for understanding and I share in your disappointment. D e l e s c r i t o r i o d e l P .

No sabemos cómo será.

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Signs of a Vocation to Priesthood

and Characteristics of a Good Candidate

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock.

Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother.

Jesus give us priests according to your heart.

Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people: Serra Club: Arthur Adams

Priests: Fr. Jose Ugalde, M.Sp.S. Fr. Jesus Sanchez, M.Sp.S.

11. A good candidate for diocesan priesthood must be physically, emotionally, and psychologically stable. Part I

How physically healthy does a man have to be to become a priest? Diocesan priests work very hard and they must have the physical health necessary to do this work day after day. It is not usually manual labor, but it is exhausting, nonetheless. Every priest can attest that celebrating three Masses on Sunday takes work. Not only does he prepare and preach the homily at each Mass. But he also attends to many other needs: greetings the people after Mass, hearing a quick Confession just before Mass, the air conditioning. All of this leaves a priest exhausted by nightfall on Sunday evening! Good health is required. If a man has a physical handicap, it cannot be so debilitating as to impede him from doing the ordinary daily duties of a priest. Being able to drive a car is almost always essential.

I have known priests who lived with very painful and difficult illnesses, but they still did outstanding

priestly work. I know one priest who is 95 percent blind but is one of the most energetic and pastorally effective priests in his diocese! Nonetheless, he admits it is very hard for him. I know others who are crippled with arthritis, some who have diabetes, and others who live in on constant pain from some other ailment. If a priest is terribly obese, this can also be a debilitating factor; it is something which must be addressed in seminary formation.

Every vocation director requires an extensive physical examination as part of the application

process to determine if a man has the physical ability and endurance to do what an ordinary priest does every day.
