oniGHt We are Here once again to honor some of the many outstanding student

athletes of Seton Hall Prep. We are inducting a group of gentlemen who have been selected for this honor as a result of their hard earned accom-plishments both on and off the fields and courts of The Prep.

it is always a difficult chore when attempting to select a few from so many. it is without question that there are many student athletes that have passed through the hallways of Seton Hall Prep and these inductees are but a few that may be deserving of this recognition. i wish to thank our Hall of fame committee for their continued efforts in the difficult selection process.

i also offer special thanks to rich Koles ‘69 and the entire staff of alumni relations for their con-tinued work to make this event one of The Prep’s premier events each year.

i encourage you all to read the full details of each of the inductee’s accomplishments in tonight’s program.

We thank you for your attendance this evening and sincerely wish that you will be able to stay until all the honorees have been inducted. Thank you for your current and continued support of Seton Hall Prep.

Donald P. Carter Jr. ’87

Donald Carter was one of the most versatile athletes ever to represent Seton Hall Prep. Whether around the oval in the 200 or 400 meters, on the straightaway for 100 meters, or on a runway in the long or triple jump,

Donald Carter was SHP’s poster child not only in his smooth as silk, effort-less, running form but also in his manner, approach and demeanor, which created an aura of pure class. Realizing he was gifted early on, Don found two sports to be calling his name, basketball and football.

However, football came to a quick halt when he missed the sign-up date, and basketball lasted three days before the third cuts were posted. Channel-ing these setbacks in a positive way, he was determined to prove himself and make his mother proud. He decided to talk to the track coach and channeled his athleticism toward an entirely different arena— track and field. The rest is history. His accom-plishments include: 1986 and 1987 member of outdoor state champion 1600m relay, 1987 triple jump cham-pion, 1987 400m champion, 1986 200m outdoor state champion, 1986 400m outdoor Essex County cham-pion, member of SHP’s 1986 state champion track and field team, and 1987 400m indoor state champion. He ranked in the top ten performances in New Jersey for those events at one time or another during his junior and senior year. Having made a name for himself on the scholastic level, he then took his talents to the University of Georgia. His success continued as he was named an Outdoor All-Amer-ican in 1991 and after graduating college he remained successful as a banking and finance executive. Within the recent past, Carter served as a mentor of The Prep’s Griffin Bridges Program, fostering and guiding the program’s scholars as he continues to be a role model for many.

Christopher J. Rogers ‘89When Chris first came to Seton Hall, lacrosse had yet to be recognized as either a club or an official sports team. Growing up in South Orange, Chris had grown fond of the sport and, although he understood that lacrosse was not yet an offering at The Prep, he hoped to bring his love for the game there so that all could enjoy it. By Chris’s sophomore year, he had already gathered a band of lacrosse brothers as well as support from

faculty members and begun his very own lacrosse practices, which at that point were merely stick drills. How-ever after many months of continued efforts by Chris and his classmates, the school recognized lacrosse as a club. In the summer of 1988, lacrosse finally became an official sport at Seton Hall Prep, with Chris Rogers

as team captain and newly hired coaches Pat and Mike Tevlin leading the way. From this moment on noth-ing but great things have stemmed from the lacrosse program, which has since built itself into a consistent state competitor and has seen numerous players go on to play at the Division I level. Even though lacrosse had yet to enjoy its current popularity and Seton Hall Prep lacrosse was only in its first year, Chris managed to score 19 goals along with 9 assists while earn-ing First Team All-Conference, Third Team Coaches All-State, the Prep’s Unsung Hero Award, and Team MVP honors. It was Chris’s love of the game, determination and fervor that made it possible for lacrosse to become an official Seton Hall Prep sport.

Derek Fogg ’91 Derek Fogg is one of the greatest swimmers in the history of Seton Hall Prep. By the end of his four-year career, Derek held the school record the 200-yard breaststroke and was part of two four-man squads that held records in the 200-yard med-ley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Although the medley relay and breaststroke records have since been broken, the free relay record still stands. Coach Randy Schweitzer fondly recalls him, saying, “He was a born leader, and had a huge impact from day one.” Derek not only helped the team in the pool, but also with his winning personality. Currently, he is tied for the third fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, and might have had the record for the fastest time if not

Fame16 prog.indd 7 10/12/2016 8:46:31 AM

Page 10: SETON HALL PREPARATORY SCHOOL - shp.org. Frank J. Finn H’87 ... Jon M. Daidone ‘83 John B. Backes ‘90 Eric A. Duncan ‘03 ... SETON HALL PREPARATORY SCHOOL

8

for his selflessness. In 1991, his senior year, Derek swam the anchor leg of the 200 free relay, which occurred shortly before his main event, the 100 breaststroke. Instead of choosing to skip the relay, Derek chose what was

best for the team and it paid off with the relay winning the state champion-ship in a time of 1:27.31. Derek’s split time was fastest of the four at 21.50. Throughout his career, Derek earned five All-Iron Hills Conference 1st Team Awards and seven All-Essex County 1st Team Awards. He had astounding success in all four years and will for-ever be remembered as part of Seton Hall’s athletic history.

Michael K. Walsh ‘94

Excelling on the diamond, on the court, and on the field, tri-sport Pirate Michael Walsh is certainly an athlete to remember. In his tenure he played baseball, varsity basketball, and varsity football. Despite being a part of the 1993 Parochial A State Cham-pionship basketball team, Mike was unquestionably at his best in a helmet and shoulder pads. A three-year let-terman, Walsh racked up 700 yards, nine total touchdowns, and 30 solo tackles as a tight end and defensive

end in his career. Despite garnering half of those offensive stats as a 1st Team All-Conference tight end as a junior, Walsh will undoubtedly be remembered for his senior year. As a captain and future team MVP of 1993

Fame16 prog.indd 8 10/12/2016 8:46:31 AM

Page 11: SETON HALL PREPARATORY SCHOOL - shp.org. Frank J. Finn H’87 ... Jon M. Daidone ‘83 John B. Backes ‘90 Eric A. Duncan ‘03 ... SETON HALL PREPARATORY SCHOOL

9

squad, Walsh piled up 365 receiving yards despite playing half of the year with the third-string quarterback throwing those passes. Proving his dynamism and leadership, he made it easier on the back-up QB by fighting and clawing his way to 211 of those receiving yards after the catch. For his efforts that year, he was awarded First Team honors for the Conference, the Area, Essex County, and the State (Parochial A). Describing one of his final team MVPs as a coach, John Allen had this to say about him: “A leader on the field and off, in season and out of season, a person who wants to do as much and more than anybody else, in preparation and actual competition (he never shirks duty, and does much without even being called upon); he is a courageous, fierce competitor, whose demeanor apart from the field would not indicate it, but he relishes violent collisions on the football field. Though not an athlete that can make playing well look easy, certainly he is a fine athlete who puts so much heart into the effort. He makes all that it takes seem worthwhile, if not easy. In his dedicated way, he personifies the saying: ‘To win the game is great, to play the game is greater, to love the game is greatest.’ He is absolutely a team-first type guy, and win, lose, or draw, his sportsmanship is exemplary. Apart from athletics, he kept his priori-ties straight by maintaining a good solid academic record of achievement. Put simply, he was a tremendous asset to the football program and to SHP.”

Michael Cordovano ’97

There are very few men who exem-plify the athletic values of Seton Hall Prep more than Michael Cordovano. As a freshman, Mike stepped right in as the starting varsity hockey goalie for the Pirates, beginning a historic and wildly successful four-year career. Mike proved to be a great leader as well as an exceptional hockey player, as he led the Pirates as team captain from 1995 to 1997. His exceptional play earned him All-Parochial honors

all four of his SHP seasons, and he also earned All-League status in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was a huge part of the team’s suc-cess during his career as well, helping the Pirates to win the Gordon Cup and the Parochial State Championship

Fame16 prog.indd 9 10/12/2016 8:46:31 AM

10

in his senior season of 1997. His senior season was truly one to remember, as Mike posted an impressive 20-2-3 record with 11 shutouts and a min-iscule 1.78 goals against average. He also received 2nd Team All-State honors in his senior season.

Christopher M. Andrews ’05Chris Andrews was the ideal point guard — a tremendous leader, an unselfish basketball player, and one of the smartest players on and off the court. His junior year, Chris averaged 4.3 points and 6.5 assists per game as the team finished the season with a 26-3 record and won the Iron Hills Conference-Iron Division title, the Essex County Tournament title, and the Parochial “A” North State crown. For his outstanding play, Chris was named All-Conference, All-Essex County, and All-State. He cemented himself as a Seton Hall Prep bas-ketball great as a senior, helping to lead the nationally-ranked Pirates team to a 30-1 record. That year SHP captured the Iron Hills Conference-Iron Division title, the Essex County Tournament title, the Non-Public “A” championship, and the Tournament of Champions title. He averaged 6.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 3.4 steals per game during the cam-paign. Again, Chris earned spots on the All-Conference, All-Essex County, and All-State teams. He was also selected as the Essex County Player of the Year. Following graduation Chris went on to play four years of basketball at Yale University. In 2010,

Chris was selected by The Star Ledger as a member of the Essex County All-Decade Team. Friend, teammate and future Ivy League rival Andrew Pusar ’05, remembers Chris as a fantastic teammate: “He was exactly what you

wanted in a point guard and leader. He was tough, charismatic and knew when to speak up and when to calm everyone down.” Andrew recalled one particularly memorable moment with Chris, right before the 2005 TOC Championship game against St. Patrick High School, when Chris was in charge of handling the full-court press: “Despite the intensity of the situation, I remember him being very calm, cool and collected before the game. The fact that he was able to handle the moment so well was motivating to the rest of us. We fed

11

off his confidence. Moments like that made Chris a very special player and person.” Former Coach Bob Farrell, who coached Chris during his SHP basketball career, added that “while Chris didn’t shoot much, he was a tremendous team leader, a very hard worker, and someone whom every-one respected.”

Christopher O’Dougherty ’05 Chris O’Dougherty was a two-time SHP lacrosse team captain, and, in 2005, an All-State and All-American selection, as well as SHP’s lacrosse MVP. After his time at The Prep, Chris

became a two-time all ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) team member at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, playing and starting in every one of his games from sopho-

more to senior year. In 2009, he was drafted by the Denver Outlaws in the MLL Collegiate Draft as the 31st overall pick, and played a total of 34 games for them from 2009 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2014. During this time with the Denver team, he would total 47 ground balls, and in 2013 Chris hit career-highs in every single major category. Today, Chris O’Dougherty lives in Seattle, Wash-ington and works as head coach and program director for Eastlake High School. He also coaches for CitySide Lax, the premier lacrosse teaching and development organization in the Pacific Northwest. He is the recipient of the Washington State Coach of the Year Award (2013) and the Washing-ton State Assistant Coach of the Year Award (2012). Chris’s contribution and dedication to his sport is seen in the endless positive words his former coaches and teammates have to say about him.

Alex R. Wujciak ’06Alex is considered one of the greatest football players to have ever come out of The Prep. A multisport athlete, he was a four-year varsity football player and a three-year starter on the basketball squad at a time when the team was ranked #1 in the state. A dominating force on both offense and defense, Alex was known for having great size, speed, and desire. Alex always knew where to be on the field and his statistics speak for themselves. During his junior and senior year, he totaled 285 tackles, 10 sacks, 4

forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. When not dismantling the oppo-nent’s offense, Alex was making big plays himself. With 43 receptions, he

churned out 700 yards and 7 touch-downs for the Pirate’s offense. As a junior Alex was named the Defensive Player of the Year for New Jersey and First Team All-State. Ranked the #17 linebacker in the US by ESPN, Alex was heavily recruited and received six Division 1 offers. Choosing Maryland, Alex continued to succeed and was named Second Team All ACC in 2008 and First Team All ACC in 2009 and 2010. Following his senior year at Maryland, Alex signed with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns in 2011. A true team leader, Alex worked exceptionally hard and set an example for future Pirate football players.

Michael J. Ness ’06 Michael was an outstanding base-ball player who led Seton Hall Prep to state titles during his junior and senior years. As a junior he earned All-County and All-Area accolades with an 8-0 record, a 0.79 ERA, and 75 strikeouts. In his senior campaign he was the team captain and earned all-state and all-county honors, going 11- 2 with a 1.89 ERA and 111 strike-outs. He was also named National Pitcher of the Week by USA Today. Michael did all this and more while

excelling in the classroom and becom-ing involved in community service as a member of the National Honor Society. After high school he contin-ued his love of baseball in the Atlantic Coast Conference playing for Duke. During his freshman year in the ACC,

he fanned 41 batters, averaged 6.36 strikeouts over nine innings, made the second most appearances for the Blue Devils and was named an ACC player of the Week. As a sophomore he was Duke’s go-to reliever, pitching 45 innings over a span of 21 appearances. He struck out 35 while issuing only 14 free passes. At the end of the season he played for the Pittsfield Dukes of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and was named to the NECBL All-Star team after going 6-1 with a 1.41 ERA through 57.1 innings. In his junior year he averaged 7.71 strikeouts per nine innings, and led all relievers for the third year in a row. At the end of his junior year he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants.

1982-83 Wrestling Team

The’82-’83 wrestling team com-pleted its season with a dual match school record of 17 wins and one loss.  This was then the most victories in the history of the SHP wrestling program. The team concluded its season with championships of the Iron Hills Conference and the North Jersey Parochial A Division. It went on to capture the NJ Parochial State Championship and it dominated the post season District 10 Championship Tournament with a winning margin of more than 40 points.

The Star Ledger ultimately ranked The Prep the 4th best team in the entire state. Led by a coaching staff that included Al Calcagno, Paul Deehan, Alex Graul, Joseph Socha and John Feeley, this team had six district champions, and three region champi-ons, with Pat Smith placing 4th in the state in his weight class.

Smith, Semos Gardner, Chris DeGrezia, Jon Daidone, Joe

Cocuzza, and Mike Guidice are already members of The Prep Hall of Fame. Additional

important contributors to this team’s success included George Anderson, Dan O’Callaghan,

Tom Grizzetti, Pete D’Alessio, Steve Deehan, Vic DeVito, and Vince Caruso.
