FR. JOSEPH’S CORNER Today we come to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. It is an

ancient feast emerged in the 2ndcen-

tury in the East. The word “Epiphany” comes from Greek, which means “appearance” or “manifestation” or “revelation” of the Lord. In the Western Church (Roman Catholics) people celebrate the first

appearance of Jesus to the Gentiles represented by the Ma-gi. In the Eastern Church (Orthodox) people commemorate the Baptism of the Lord, at which the Father and the Holy Spirit testified, identified, and revealed Jesus’ true identity as the only begotten Son of God. Although both sides cele-brate this feast differently, they all recognize the im-portance, the significance of this feast as God’s constant care toward His people, giving us the greatest gift of all, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Indeed, through many ways God continues to “reveal,” “manifest,” “appear,” “show,” and “demonstrate” His divine love, compassion and presence among us in the Bible (e.g. the angels re-vealed Jesus to the shepherds, St. John the Baptist revealed Jesus at his baptism, the Virgin Mary revealed Jesus in the wedding at Cana…) and in our lives. Many people believe the visitation of the Magi involves three wise men, schol-ars, magicians, astrologers or kings coming from the East because they offer three different gifts to Baby Jesus: gold, frankincense and myrrh. However, they may not be three persons or all male or kings. It is because of this gift giv-ing practice comes the tradition of gift exchange at Christmas time. Every gift is supposed to be wrapped carefully so that it can be “revealed” by the receiver who unwraps it with joy and amazement. Our first reading today is from chapter 60 of the book of Isaiah in which the author describes how gentiles come from distant plac-es, attracted by the splendor of Jerusalem, bringing gifts and tenderly carrying the people of God. Our second reading is from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in which he preaches the revelation of the mystery hidden from all eternity that in Jesus gentiles are co-heirs with Jews for salvation of the world. Our Gospel reading is taken from St. Matthew, chapter 2, in which the author describes how the Magi come with gifts seeking the new born King of the Jews and upsetting Herod and all Jerusalem for sev-eral reasons: (1) the Magi’s gifts were not for Herod, (2) Someone is replacing him. Because all these readings talk about gift, the other day, I found two Christmas gifts lay-ing on my desk. They were wrapped so meticulously, I did not know who the givers were. I opened one box and found a card inside and “revealed” the mysterious identity of the giver. I was more surprised by the thoughtfulness, loving and caring concerns of the giver than the gift itself, yet not discounting the precious gift. I experienced similar astonishing joy from the other gift which brought me much joy, happiness and love. What’s my gift to God?

LA ESQUINA DE PADRE JOSEPH Hoy venimos a celebrar la Fiesta de la Epifanía del Señor. Es una fiesta antigua surgida en el 2do siglo en el Este. La palabra "Epifanía" viene del griego, que significa "aparición" o "manifestación" o "revelación" del Señor. En la Iglesia occidental (católicos romanos), la gente ce-lebra la primera aparición de Jesús ante los gentiles re-presentados por los magos. En la Iglesia oriental (ortodoxa), las personas conmemoran el bautismo del Señor, en el que el Padre y el Espíritu Santo testificaron, identificaron y revelaron la verdadera identidad de Jesús como el Hijo unigénito de Dios. Aunque ambas partes celebran esta fiesta de manera diferente, todos recono-cen la importancia, el significado de esta fiesta como el cuidado constante de Dios hacia su pueblo, que nos da el regalo más grande de todos, su Hijo unigénito Jesu-cristo. De hecho, a través de muchas maneras, Dios continúa "revelando", "manifestando", "apareciendo", "mostrando" y "demostrando" su amor divino, compa-sión y presencia entre nosotros en la Biblia (por ejem-plo, los ángeles revelaron a Jesús a los pastores, San Juan Bautista reveló a Jesús en su bautismo, la Virgen María reveló a Jesús en la boda en Caná ...) y en nues-tras vidas. Muchas personas creen que la visita de los Magos involucra a tres hombres sabios, eruditos, magos, astrólogos o reyes que vienen de Oriente porque ofrecen tres regalos diferentes al Niño Jesús: oro, incienso y mi-rra. Sin embargo, quizás no son tres personas o todos hombres o reyes. Es debido a esta práctica de dar rega-los que viene la tradición de intercambio de regalos en Navidad. Se supone que cada regalo debe envolverse con cuidado para que pueda ser "revelado" por el recep-tor que lo desenvuelve con alegría y asombro. Nuestra primera lectura de hoy es del capítulo 60 del libro de Isaías en el que el autor describe cómo los gentiles vie-nen de lugares distantes, atraídos por el esplendor de Jerusalén, trayendo regalos y llevando con ternura al pueblo de Dios. Nuestra segunda lectura es de la carta de San Pablo a los Efesios en la que predica la revelación del misterio oculto desde la eternidad, que en Jesús los gentiles son co-herederos de los judíos para la salvación del mundo. Nuestra lectura del Evangelio está tomada de San Mateo, capítulo 2, en el que el autor describe cómo los Magos vienen con regalos en busca del Rey de los Judíos recién nacido y que molestan a Herodes y a toda Jerusalén por varias razones: (1) los regalos de los Magos no fueron para Herodes, (2) Alguien lo está re-emplazando. Debido a que todas estas lecturas hablan sobre regalos, el otro día, encontré dos regalos de Navi-dad en mi escritorio. Fueron envueltos tan meticulosa-mente, que no sabía quiénes eran los dadores. Abrí una caja, encontré una tarjeta dentro y "reveló" la misteriosa identidad de quien me lo dio. Me sorprendió más la consideración, el amor y las preocupaciones del dador que el regalo en sí, pero sin descontar el regalo precio-so. Experimenté una alegría asombrosa similar con el otro regalo que me trajo mucha alegría, felicidad y amor. ¿Cuál es mi regalo a Dios?
