session 2 presentation
TRANSCRIPT
PRIMARY GEOGRAPHY – SESSION 2
Objectives:
- Consider issues of medium and long term planning
- Discuss learning approaches – what will make the subject interesting?
- Consider ways of developing assessment
Planning for Geography
Questions?
What are the elements of the curriculum which need to be
covered?
In what order should they be taught – developing continuity?
How can we ensure that the students develop their geographical
understanding and skills during their primary experience –
ensuring progression?
Activity 1 – Developing a long term plan
In groups – use the Key Stage 1 and 2 Programmes of Study, and develop Key Stage PoS which satisfy the National Curriculum Orders.
Before we start, we need to consider the contextual information you need to know before you can complete the exercise – by yourself jot down 3 questions you would want to ask before starting such an exercise in school.
What have you found out by doing this exercise?
Progression
What do we mean by progression?
How might we track it?
Why is it important?
Activity 2 – Developing a medium term plan
In your group, chose one element of your Key Stage 2 PoS, and assume you have a 6 week half term with a lesson a week. Produce an outline plan for a Scheme of Work in this area of the PoS.
Reflecting on planning
Why do we need to plan?
What are some of the ‘rules’ of planning?
What are the challenges in planning?
Why are continuity and progression so important?

Activity 3 – Investigating approaches
In your group:
1. Outline the main methods which can be used in your approach
2. Give at least one concrete example of the methodology through use in a lesson
3. Use the Standards site to highlight a scheme of work, and download it, highlighting and discussing how your approach is included in the chosen Scheme of Work.
