NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN

OBJECTIVES Identify the requirements of a balanced diet
Estimate the amount required for each of the 5 food groups to ensure your diet is balanced.
Create a food plate to demonstrate each group.
PAPER OUT, PHONES AWAY LET’S START! On the top of your page you need to write your name and the following heading: Understand the nutritional needs of children
Next you need to write the following:
5.1 Explain the nutritional value of the main food groups
WHAT IS A BALANCED DIET?
In pairs write down what you consider to be a healthy balanced diet.
BALANCED DIET Eating a balanced diet means that we eat the correct quantity and proportion of nutrients to meet the body’s requirements to work efficiently and to be healthy. Watch the following video clip and complete the hand-out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YimuIdEZSNY
WHAT MAKES A DIET BALANCED? There are five particular food groups you should be eating to ensure your diet is balanced, does anyone think they remember what they are? Write what they are in your notes.
FIVE FOOD GROUPS Fruit and VegetablesCarbohydrates – rice, potatoes, bread, cereals.Protein -meat, fish, eggs and beansMilk and DairyFats and Sugars
HOW MUCH? How much should you be eating of these foods to ensure your diet is healthy and balanced? Use the circle provided and divide into the each five food groups depending on how much you should eat a day.
What percentages would each be?

Research what the government guidance states on the basic nutritional requirements for children. You need to read, re-write then reference what you have wrote down. Off you go, you have ten minutes……
