Serving with Faith and Love July 2019

Kia Ora, Salaam-Alaikum, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Namaste, Bula, Malo ni, Makadini, Annyoung,

Witamy, Welcome,

As Catholics, we know that the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith: it is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Pope Francis has called it the "Sacrament of Love":

"The Eucharist is at the heart of 'Christian initiation', together with Baptism and Confirmation, and it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself. From this Sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic

journey of faith, of communion, and of witness."

For children who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion this is a big deal. And for all of us, no matter how many times we have received Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, it should always be a big deal. On Sunday, 23rd June, at the 8.30am Mass we celebrated some of our children receiving their first Holy Communion. May the blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ be poured on you from this day forward.

Congratulations to these lucky children.

Curriculum

Room 4 Science Making soup in the classroom.

Onions, phew!!!! No thank you!!!

What I learnt about making soup is you peel carrots and also you have to put oil in the pot. Also after you peel the

carrots you have to cut them small. By Maselino

Room 4 Myths and Legends I can see a Samoan beach. I can hear the birds singing songs. I can smell the sea, it

smells salty. I can see beautiful fluffy clouds and a bright blue sky.

My story is about Ranginui, Papa and Maui. My setting is in my imagination. My

main character likes the sea and he’s kind and …

My problems is where the stars come from. They come from heaven and the sky

and the galaxy. My second character is Maui and he’s

powerful and full of tricks. By Mary-Ula

I can hear the wind. I can smell lava. I can feel the

water. I can taste salty water. I can see a cave that is

dark and cold. I can hear the wind blowing in the trees.

I can smell lava and it smells hot and wet. I can feel the

water. It is nice and cool on my hand and face. I can

taste the water.

I can see a big cave in the dark foggy forest. I can hear a scary Yeti’s loud and growling

voice. I can smell the blood from the Yeti’s mouth. It feels damp and cold in the Yeti’s

scary cave. It tastes like dirt and leaves are rotting on the ground. Ruamoko is a

warrior. He lives in Shuija. He’s a good person who guards the city. He eats fish and drinks juice. Then he became

bad because he got angry at his friend. By Carter

Room 5 Aranui Koru Land

I created a Koru structure because a Koru represents the

New Zealand or Maori culture. It symbolizes the beginning

of life. As a New Zealand wonder of the world structure

tourist from all over the world will certainly want to know

more about us kiwis and our identity. By Aliyah. Yr.5

Futuristic Army Robot

My imagination project is based on what the future army

of NZ could look like in twenty year’s time. Robots are

better to defend the country because if they get shot the robots could be repaired unlike humans. Maybe one day I

will make this project become reality. By Jazza. Yr. 6

Aquarium Life

This NZ Wonder of the World project is my imagination of what an aquarium should

look like. It has different types of fish that are not seen in NZ. We need to take care of

our sea creatures by using more biodegradable things and not plastic. You will be

enchanted with the sea life and experience the wonders of nature. As you walk

through the aquarium you will be surrounded by fish moving around you. I enjoyed

creating a 3-D aquarium.

Room 1 Skipping

This is hard work but we all are learning how to skip!

Room 1 Hansel and Gretel stories Hansel and Gretel got lured to the house in the forest. The house was made of candy but a witch lived there. By

Isaac.

The witch put Hansel in the cage. By Jacob

The witch lives in a yummy house. By Chris

The witch had terrible eyesight but a very good sense of smell. The witch wanted to trick the kids. By Julie-May

BIKES We are blessed. Thank you to ANZ and Corporate Challenge events. Three lucky students received three fabulous bikes from a team building exercise that ANZ held last week.

Dear ANZ Bank,

Thank you for donating such a terrific bike. I love the green colour. I’m really happy because I’ve already crashed

two of my old bikes and so I really needed a new one. I’m looking forward to riding it at home in the holidays to the

park. From Maselino

Dear ANZ Bank,

Thank you for giving me a new bike. I like the green colour too and the helmet is cool. I’m learning how to ride a

bike now to the park and practice with my dad. It’s going pretty good so far but I think I’ll get better in the holidays. I

will have 2 weeks to practice some more. From AJ

Student Led Learning Conversations These went very well. Thank you to all the parents who came in to school to see what their children are learning. No longer will they answer “nothing” when you ask them what they learnt at school, because you have actually seen what they do learn.

Yesterday was a proud moment for me as it was the day of my SLLC, Student Learning Conversation. I was very

confident to share my learning with my Mum. Firstly I welcomed her into my classroom and started off with a

prayer. Then I showed my Mum all of the work I have done in Term 1 and 2. Next I took my Mum around the class

took show her my Imagination project and other pieces of work. She told me she was very proud of me and to keep

up the great effort and wonderful learning. I returned home thankful for the support from my family, teachers and

peers. By Aliyah Yr.5

Page 5: Serving with Faith and Love - St Joseph's Catholic School

It was a great opportunity to share my learning with my Nana and my Mum at the Student Lead Learning

Conversation. The best topic I shared with my family was Matariki because I got to talk about my knowledge and

artwork. My family were thrilled with how I spoke with confidence. I welcomed my family with a prayer and a thank

you. By Marie Yr.5

During The Student Lead Learning Conversation, I was confident to talk about my learning with my Mum and sister.

First I welcomed them both and started off with a prayer by thanking the Lord for the two terms of learning. Later on

I showed my family the things I did in term 1 and 2, then I shared the three best activities I am proud of. I took my

Mum and sister around the class. They were proud of my learning. Finally I wished my lovely teacher Mrs. Victor

goodnight and thanked my her for everything. By Ellery Yr. 5

Uniform Change Attached you will see a proposal for a change in our school uniform. The uniform we have at the moment (the light blue shirt) is not easy to keep clean and does not wear well. There are a few suggestions with colours and styles. The students have voted on their favourite as well as some of the parents. Consultation is still ongoing. A timeline for fazing in a new uniform is usually 2 years so once a decision is made, we will be looking at introducing the new uniform at the beginning of next year.

Fundraiser The chocolates will be at your doors this week. Please encourage everyone to buy these yummy chocolates and bring back the money in the first week of next term. The money raised will be going towards your children’s education so is definitely going to a good cause. Back by popular demand, we will be asking everyone to sell New Zealand’s favourite brand of chocolates. If you need more than one box to sell please inform the office as soon as possible.

News from your Out Going Board

Thank you for all the hard work that the previous

Board of Trustees have put into the school. Some

have been on our board for a number of years

and their continued dedication to the success of

all the students in the school is very indicative of

the hard work that has gone on in the past. We

farewell Dan Smith, who has been with us for 9

years. We have been blessed with his wisdom

and continued wise words over these years. We thank Bridget Burke, who has also been on the board for 6

years as a dedicated Proprietors Rep. Tava’e Efaraimo, who came back to work with us again. We welcomed

her and now bid her adieu. Fotu Hogland who has always been a strong supporter of the school.

To all these outgoing members, may God always keep you in his hands and guide you through your

journey.

Birthdays

Happy Birthday to our July birthdays; Mqren Al-Nuaimi, Sarhai Birch, Andreas Finepolo, Tanya Hoglund, David Johnston and Enya Siemsen.

May God always keep you close to His heart.
