Serving with Faith and Love 25 October 2018
Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Namaste, Bula, Malo ni, Makadini, Annyoung, Witamy, Welcome,
This term our focus is on Heroes and as we spoke to the children, Jesus is our hero. He is telling us that he is only an
example and we need to do as he does and become heroes ourselves. We can become heroes to each other. Every
little thing we do impacts on the person next to us. We need to be the best we can be, all the time and not only on
Sundays. Let us pray for the courage to become the people that others can look up to and follow, just as Jesus did.
The school’s value for this term is Compassion. So as we go about our everyday business, let us think of others around
us and let us be there to offer help. Let us extend our hands and give that assistance to our neighbour. Let us all be
heroes.
RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
The term starts with prayer and then into Communion of Saints ending with Advent at the end of the year.
We will be having a special school mass for All Saints Day on Thursday, November 1st at 9.00am in conjunction with
the Parish. All are welcome.
REHU TAI FESTIVAL OF ORAL LANGUAGE
At the beginning of the term, three of our four finalists represented our school at the Rehu Tai Oral Language Festival
competition at Pt Chevalier Primary School. They were: Spoken Word Poetry – Kenani Hoglund with My Heart
Warming Mother, 10² Flash Talk – Arianna Steffany with Change in Fashion and Prepared Speech – Boston Efaraimo
with Show a Positive Attitude. A great day for all of them.
REHU TAI FESTIVAL - SPEECH COMPETITION
It was my first experience to present my 3-minute speech at the Rehu Tai Festival yesterday. Though I was nervous but once I was on stage, it was a moment of pride presenting in front of an audience. Thank you Dad for supporting me the whole day. By Boston Yr. 6
REHU TAI FESTIVAL – SPOKEN WORD POETRY COMPETITION
The moment I got up on that stage, I felt butterflies in my stomach. I was a real nervous wreck. It was fun sharing my poem with all the other inner schools. I am so proud of myself for this achievement. Also, in my opinion, I think my poetry was spoken right from my heart. By Kenani Hoglund Yr. 6
REHU TAI FESTIVAL - 10² FLASH TALK COMPETITION
The Rehu Tai Festival (Speech competition) was an amazing experience. When I got up on the stage to present my Flash Talk, I felt really nervous. I thought I was going to mess up. But I didn’t and I was so happy that I got through my presentation. By Ariana Steffany Yr. 6
GRANDPARENTS LITURGY
This is a very special invitation to all our Grandparents to join us for a Liturgy on Monday Morning, 5th November at 8.50 am. Our grandparents are very special people and we would like to acknowledge their support in our children’s’ lives and welcome them into our school community.

KIDS FOR KIDS
Kids for Kids is a concert to show case talent of our young people and a wonderful
family nightout. The concert series is now celebrating it's 24th year and over the years
has bought more than 280,000 children together. This year alone 8,000 children will
take to the stage. St Joseph’s are a part of this mass choir and we will be sending our
years 3-8 students to join in with other schools. The date is Wednesday, 7th
November. The performance starts at 7.30pm at Bruce Mason Centre, North Shore.
Tickets are available through www.ticketmaster.co.nz/search?q=kids+for+kids . The organisers are
recommending to pre-book tickets as they sell very quickly and are normally booked out in advance.
SUMMER UNIFORM
A letter went out this week regarding the summer uniform. Please ensure that your child comes to school in correct
uniform to be ready for learning. The temperature is rising so we need the children sitting comfortably so they can
concentrate on their learning and not be worried about their jumpers and jackets.
A reminder of the uniform:
Girls: short sleeve monogramed shirts/blouses, school skirt, black sandals, black or dark blue hair ties and dark
blue bucket hats.
Boys: short sleeve monogramed shirts, dark blue shorts, black sandals and dark blue bucket hats.
The PE uniform for both girls and boys consists of: black PE shorts, a light blue t-shirt or polo shirt with no
monogram and sports shoes.
The wearing of correct uniform is compulsory for all students. This not only shows the pride you and your child have
in the school but is also a great learning opportunity for all.
If for some reason your child is unable to come to school with the correct uniform can you please inform the office.
A note, written and signed by you, should be given to your child to be shown to their teacher.

REFLECTIONS
WOW! Our playground feels so much better to play now.
It is high and bouncy for the kids to play.
By Leana
As I play the in school playground I am amazed to feel
how bouncy and squishy the bark is. Playing in the
playground is different and safer. Thank You Westhaven
Rotary and Kennards Hire. By Dominic
Due to the new bark in the playground, I am able to
jump high without hurting myself. It is spongy, bouncy
and light. It makes me feel tall and sporty. The bark
has made the playground fun and projects clean
environment. By Julizah
I think the bark is a lot better than before because of
its softness. When I play on the bark, it feels so soft
and squishy. Now the children can play and be safe on
the playground thank you all who made this
playground safe for us. By Enya
ROOM Wha (Kereru)
The Herons read the true story about Diana from the School Journal “Home”.
Question: Think about how the girl in the story was courageous.
Answer: “ Diana moved to Auckland in 2017 from Alesia in Samoa. Diana’s uncle lived in New Zealand and he offered
to adopt her. Diana missed her mum and dad but she chose to be brave and did her best to fit in at school even
though she missed her family. We think she is a good example of a hero.”
By Raeyah
The Keas team read the story called ‘Mickel and the Blacksmith’.
Question: Describe a character in their story who was courageous.
Answers: The blacksmith was smart and brave because he made a plan to trick the giant who had sucked up all the
clouds into breathing them out again. This made it rain again, so all the villagers and the horses started running
around being happy.” By Noell
“The Blacksmith was helpful fixing tools that were broken and making shoes for the horses. He was brave because he
stands up to other people, the bully in the story.” By Augustine and Taliah.
Happy Birthday to our October birthdays
Mercy Akeli, La-Rania Pasina, Oscar Smith-Muller, Marie Hoglund and Julizah Maoe.
May God always keep you close to His heart.
