The Country Quilterie Carriage House Square, Office and Retail Complex locat-ed at 2785 Route 115, Effort, PA 18330 has been honored for be-ing one of only seven-ty featured sites, in the entire United States and Canada (and one of only six in the State of Pennsylvania) for it’s unique and inter-esting design, function and use of green space “designed with na-ture and for people”, in the newest edition of “Rural By Design”, a detailed reference guide book for archi-tects, planners, and everyone involved in planning the towns and open spaces in America. Written by renowned author and lecturer, Randall Ar-endt, this reference book is used in librar-ies and universities throughout the United States. This book is rec-ommended for “the essential planning li-brary” by the Ameri-can Planning Society and is required read-ing for the AICP exam. Mr. Arendt traveled throughout the Unit-ed States and Canada, gathering research for this book, and nar-
rowed his selection down to just seventy properties, includ-ing Carriage House
Square! Mr. Arendt’s “Rural By Design” reference book features five photographs and two pages of text on Car-
riage House Square, an eight unit Office and Retail complex, featuring six units in the main bulding (inContinued on Page 3

the front) and two units in the second building (set back, and to the right of the parking field, which is located behind the main building). Designed and owned by Arthur and MaryAnn Kwant of Effort, Carriage House Square fea-tures a rear parking field, creekside deck (overlooking Pohopo-co Creek), with park benches, picnic tables and photo spots, plus several out build-ings, including San-ta’s Workshop, the Woodcarver’s Cottage
and the lde Quilding School. The main building’s six units are occupied by Pennsylvania State House of Representa-tive Jack Rader (176th; Legislative District), Occasion Reflections (locally made crafts and gifts), the Quilting Academy (Quilting School), Be You Tiful (girl’s day spa), Cox Claims Group (inter-national insurance claims office), Effort-less Communications (Motorola business two-way radios), and Fairhaven Properties (residential apart-ment, condo and town home rentals) The second build-ing’s two units is oc-
cupied by the Coun-try Quilterie (fabrics, quilts, quilting sup-plies and home decor), and Carolina Quilt-works (online fabrics, patterns, quilts and quilted accessories). “Rural By Design” by Randall Arendt is available through Amazon.com, all ma-jor books stores and
public libraries. For more informa-tion about Carriage House Square, contact Cross Creek Devel-opers, Inc. at 570-620-9707. Carriage House Square’s ad can be found on page three of this week’s edition of The Focus.

The Pleasant Valley Girls Lacrosse Team has had an amazing start to their first sea-son winning the ma-jority of their games! This is particularly impressive since this is the first high school girl’s lacrosse team to play at Pleasant Val-ley. To help offset the cost of this fledgling program, the PV Girls Lacrosse Team will be hosting a flower and plant sale on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday,
May 17 in front of the High School. We will be selling a variety of spring planting flow-ers, both by the tray and by the pot, as well as beautiful hanging baskets to enhance your outdoor living space. All proceeds will benefit the PV Girls Lacrosse Team. Please come out and support PV’s historic first high school Girl’s Lacrosse team!

It’s believed that the tradition of using a baby to sig-nify the New Year started in Greece around 600 B.C. Other traditions of the season include the making of New Year’s resolutions, which dates back to the early Babylonians. The National Blue
Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima was built in1978 to honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Sitting upon 150 acres of picturesque grounds in Washington Township, it is a replica of the Fatima Shrine in Portugal where the Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children on the 13th of the months of May – October in 1917. The Shrine provides a peaceful refuge for quiet prayer and public worship. At its center is a beautiful outdoor chapel with a bronze statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary rising 145 feet above. The lower level houses the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, where daily Mass and confessions are

St. Luke’s Universi-ty Health Network has broken ground for the new St. Luke’s Hospi-tal-Monroe Campus, adjacent to Wigwam Road and Route 611, in Bartonsville. This will be the first new hospital in Monroe County in 100 years. Joining members of St. Luke’s leadership team were state and local officials, region-al business leaders, Monroe County phy-sicians, members of the community, sup-porters and friends. Officials spoke of the new hospital and St. Luke’s commitment to enhance the health care experience in the region. Dr. Charles Saun-ders, Chairman of St. Luke’s Universi-ty Health Network’s Board of Trustees, led the celebration for the milestone so import-ant to St. Luke’s and
Monroe County. “St. Luke’s has been bless-ed by the strong sup-port of people in the community and today is no exception. I feel privileged to witness another tremendous outpouring of com-munity support as we break ground for the seventh hospital in the St. Luke’s University Health Network. As a physician, I am partic-ularly delighted that it is the physicians in this community that asked St. Luke’s to build a hospital where they could deliver a new standard in the practice of medicine. They have played a key role in the design and organization of

this new hospital,” Saunders said. St. Luke’s is invest-ing $80 million into the 180,000-square foot hospital that will be easily accessed from I-80, Route 33 and Route 611. The hospital will have four stories, 108 private pa-
tient rooms including 12 beds for critical care patients, a large and efficient emergency room, helipad, oper-ating rooms, a cardi-ac catheterization lab and the most modern diagnostic technology. The campus, which is nestled in a beautiful,
natural setting, will in-clude a large fountain and walking trails. The hospital is expect-ed to open in the Fall of 2016. St. Luke’s Hospi-tal-Monroe Campus will offer patients some of the world’s most cutting-edge
medical technolo-gies to diagnose and treat disease, thanks, in part, to St. Luke’s long-standing clinical relationship with GE Healthcare. St. Luke’s has been an interna-tional show site for GE Healthcare for more than 15 years.
“I would like to end my remarks by saying ‘thank you’ to all those that have helped make today possible,” said Anderson. “The list would be quite long if I thanked people individually, so I will focus on groups. TheContinued on Page 9

first group that saw the wisdom in con-structing this hospital is the local group of physicians we view as our partners. The second group is our Board of Trustees who had the vision to endorse this project and who gave their approval to finance it. And finally, nothing can be done without the cooperation of the regulatory agencies, elected officials and the Stroud Township Planning Commission and Board of Super-visors. We thank them for all of their support and confidence.

(NAPSA)-Recent research by United Minds reveals some fascinating facts about Americans’ relation-ship with green spac-
es. For example, the
Great Growing
Ideas
Global Green Space Report, produced by the Husqvarna Group, found: • 74 percent of peo-ple would like their children to spend more time in gardens and yards; • Two-thirds of re-spondents believe that visiting and interact-
ing with green con-tributes to their quali-ty of life; • When asked what impresses them about other people’s gar-dens, the top three things were: 1. Flowers-52 per-cent 2. Fruit trees-52 per-cent
3. A well-trimmed lawn-46 percent. To get the grass greener on your side
of the fence, consider these suggestions: • Water, water, ev-ery day-at least at first.

Great Growing IdeasContinued from
Page 13keep the top half inch of the soil moist. • Stay sharp. Make sure the blades on your lawn mower are sharp so as not to injure the blades of grass. • Mow less. Don’t remove more than a third of the top growth in a single cutting. • Mow more easily. To help homeowners make the most of their mowing, the world’s
largest producer of outdoor power prod-ucts has come up with two new machines. Homeowners deter-mined to mow more securely on hilly ter-rain or damp grass can now experience with a walk mower the kind of traction and han-dling they can get in an automobile-All-Wheel Drive. Designed for uneven terrain and the toughest mowing con-ditions, the sleek yet rugged HU800AWD features a heavy-duty
steel deck and a pow-erful Honda GCV 190 engine. The wheels’ aggressive tread pat-tern provides addi-tional traction and maneuverability so you can mow com-fortably, carefully and without damaging your lawn. It shares a num-ber of features with the complete line of Husqvarna walk mowers, including a three-year warranty; a side guard and grass comb, to improve edging performance; a large, dust-block-ing bag; a premium, comfort-grip control bail to reduce opera-tor fatigue; a variable drive speed; and a wa-ter hose connector for easy deck cleaning. When you have a lot
of lawn to mow, there’s the new R 120S Rider. It has a front-mount, 42-inch side discharge deck, which offers ex-cellent visibility and makes trimming and mowing underneath overhanging objects
easier than ever. These mowers are available exclusively at Lowe’s and autho-rized Husqvarna deal-ers. Further facts at www.husqvarna.com, www.facebook.com/

(NAPSI)—Millions of Americans enjoy the unmatched com-fort of propane-pow-ered appliances for space heating, water heating, cooking and clothes drying. To help them stay safe and comfortable in cold weather, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) offers some advice. “Safety is extreme-ly important to the propane industry,” PERC President and CEO Roy Willis says. “We’ve compiled a checklist that home-
Simple Safety Tipsowners can follow to put them at ease.” • Make sure you have an adequate propane supply. Call for a delivery when your propane tank is
30 percent full. Doing so gives your propane provider time to reach you when roads are bad or demand for propane is high. • Mark your pro-pane tank. Use a flag, pole or stake high-er than the average snow cover depth. The marker will help you avoid plowing into or shoveling snow on top of your tank in case of a heavy snowfall. • Consider install-ing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide de-
tectors for additional security. Always fol-low the manufacturer instructions for instal-lation, location and maintenance. • Create an emer-gency preparedness plan. Frequently re-view the plan with all household members and make sure to post the phone numbers for your propane provider
and local emergency services in an accessi-ble place. • Prepare a disaster supply kit. It’s import-ant to be prepared in the case of an emer-gency by creating a kit with several days’ worth of water and canned foods, a can opener, extra clothes and blankets, flash-lights and batteries.
Include a battery-pow-ered NOAA weather radio to stay informed as conditions change. • Consider having a propane-powered generator installed.
When other power sources fail, a pro-pane-powered gen-erator can keep your home operating with-out interruption.Continued on Page 16

Simple Safety TipsContinued from
Page 15 According to Wil-lis, another step that propane customers should take is to build a strong relationship with their local pro-pane provider. “Weather is unpre-dictable,” Willis says.
“Your propane pro-vider can help you put together a plan to make sure that you have the energy you and your family need when you need it.” For more informa-tion on propane and tips, visit www.pro-panecomfort.com.

Home Ideas (NAPSA)-Here is a spring tip: If you are working outdoors, don’t use an electrical tool that is wet or close to water. Spring show-ers may increase your risk of electrical shock. That’s the word from the Electrical Safety Foundation Interna-tional. Learn more at www.esfi.org.
* * * Advances in battery technology are mak-ing it possible for the performance of cord-less tools to match that of their gas-powered counterparts. That’s the word from the ex-perts at the company called OREGON. To learn more, visit www.OregonCordless.com.

of today’s fuel sup-

(NAPSA)-When it comes to used cars, safety is no acci-dent. But an accident shouldn’t keep you from buying a used car you love. In fact, you may drive away with a bargain.
The Problem There are plenty of previously damaged cars out there. In the U.S., car crashes hap-pen about every 60 seconds-and one in six used cars being sold has been in an accident. The key is to know what you’re buying.
An Answer You can start your used car search at the new Carfax.com. Ev-ery car for sale comes with a free Carfax
Buying A Once-

Report that includes any reported acci-dents. It’ll help you tell things like how se-vere the accident was, what areas of the car were damaged and if the air bags deployed. Next, get a mechanic to help you determine if the car was repaired properly.
Following these steps can help you find a swan where others see only an ugly duckling.
Learn More You can get more information and shop for great used cars at the new www.carfax.com.
